Location: Louisville, OH 44641 | Anyone ever play a Nylon String Viper EA63? Impressions? I'd like to get a nylon string guitar and love my 12 string Viper...so this kind of makes sense to me. There's one for sale on Reverb now that looks tempting...although the asking price feels a little high.
Haven't bought an Ovation in some time and looking at Bernie's collection has given me the itch!

Location: Louisville, OH 44641 | I just bought Al's EA63. This will be my first nylon string guitar. But I love my other Vipers because they are so easy to play and sound wonderful (through the right amp). I'm determined to learn how to finger pick. And it will be interesting to see how long it takes to learn finger picking at the tender age of 56.
Anyone have any recommended finger picking styles or links they'd like to share to a novice? I play on my humble little church's Praise Team.

No, but no one, could do finger picking like Chet Atkins. I think he learned it from Mother Maybelle Carter, and improved on it; BTW, Merle Travis was no slouch at doing this either. Thom Bresh, Jerry Reed, and GC were/are real great finger pickers, and influenced Vince Gill, Marty Stuart, and Brad Paisley "chicken picken", I think. Here in CANADA, we have Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, and the under-rated, but sadly, now late greats Lenny Breau, and Ed Bickert, who were actually jazz players. Randy Bachman learned his finger picking from Chet and Merle, personally, at one time, when was with The Guess Who back in the day. Some of these players were influenced by Earl Scruggs' banjo rolls, too. There are all kinds of players who do finger picking. It's like everything else. It's just takes practice. Once you master it, you're laughin'.

BTW...anyone know where I can get a Truss Rod Cover for the EA63? Is there someone on the OFC that makes customs?

Location: Texas | Buster (Brad) Jones ...who played Ovation at one point...has quite a few instructional videos out there...So does John Knowles, unless they are out of print. And I concur with Paul about Craig Dobbins...he has extremely good instruction videos. Some you can find on youtube. Like HERE |

My EA63 arrived today and it's sooo easy to play...wow. But it's time to spend some time in the wood shed learning to finger pick! Looking forward to it and I'm hoping it will open up a whole new area of guitar for me.
Many thanks to Al for having one reasonably priced. I'm glad to be the new owner. This is my first nylon string guitar. |
