New owner of a new Ovation CS24-5 Celebrity Standard Black Mid-Depth Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar.
Did a search and read the other posts about the cables before posting.
I understand that the cables are no longer available.
I also read that there is some kind of cable that can be made. Way over my head 
I contacted several of the larger internet music stores and could not have them make a cable.
This is my very first electric guitar and I was very disappointed that none of the folks I contacted, including the place that sold me the guitar, would help me get the electric function working. I know absolutely nothing about guitar cables.
Does anyone know where they will make me a cable that will allow me to use the electric function of my new guitar?
Please don't tell me how simple it is- I am nearly 70, retired, and not a bit interested in learning about cables and soldering parts together.
Thank you in advance for helping me get a cable.

What kind of "cable" are you talking about. To my knowledge, put a battery in the pre-amp and plug in a standard guitar cable to your favorite amp.

| The Ovations require a specific "activation cable" [part number 9658]. It will not play with a standard cable.

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Some require a "dummy" plug to activate the tuner when not playing through an amp, but I have never heard of an "activation" cable nor can I find that part number. FWIW, the dummy plug is just 1/4 plug without a wire on it. Also, I do not believe Celebrity guitars had this, but I could be wrong. Where are you getting this information from? It's also easy to test. Just plug in a regular guitar cable. (ensure there is a good battery in), but again, this is ONLY to turn on the Tuner when not plugged in. |

Location: Sydney, Australia | Here's my tip (already mentioned above): Change the battery! The guitar may have been sitting in the shop for ages and the battery simply died. The only amp I'm aware of that needs the dummy plug to use the tuner is the VIP (of which I have three!). |

What is the Ovation #9658 activation cable?
The XLR "activation" cable is an XLR-XLR configuration that makes the shell (handle)-to-pin 1(Ground) connection. This connection should always be made with such cables, but as a cost savings, often it is not grounded. Ovations use an XLR output jack that allows the preamp to switch on when the XLR cable is inserted by using this shell to connect the negative pole of the battery to the preamp circuit.
If you go to the guitar center website they still list the part but can no longer get them from Ovation.
Anyone know where I can find one or have one made? |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Hi Windancer, we hear what you are saying, but the OP-48T pre-amp on that guitar to my knowledge does not take an XLR Cable as stock. We really are trying to help.
Does that jack on the back of the guitar look like A or B.
A = 1/4" on the left ..... or ...... B = XLR on the right.
 And I guess while we're at it... Is this the pre-amp ?

And HERE is a CS24-5 on the NEW Ovation website.
Just to add... You do not need a special cable.
Look inside the sound-hole and see if there are any unconnected wires hanging loose inside there.
If there are they need to be connected. Otherwise check the battery.
Push the "Tuner" button. The display should light-up.
Otherwise you should just need a regular 1/4" Cable.

No. It is just a 1/4".
Unless they sudden came up with a new thing.

My preamp is sorta like the one you have pictured but also has the tuner built in.
I never had any intention of buying an electric. But this was the model Ovation that sang to me.
A young feller that works here for us sometimes spotted my new guitar, and the next time he was here he brought over a cd 'Rock Star"? and loaded it onto our Xbox 360. We installed a new battery, and then he plugged in the guitar with his cable.
The program came right up, but without sound. Then the program kept saying to plug in the guitar. He played with it for another half hour or so, then we gave up. He uses his equipment all the time and was certain the cable was good. Nothing. No sound from the Xbox at all.
I went to the Ovation site and learned about the activation cable. Then to the large music stores on line. Then came here and registered and made my post.
He is due back Friday. He is going to bring one of his guitars along to see it that works or not.
I haven't touched a guitar in more than 20 years- even if I never use the electric feature it should still be available, yes?

Ok, so we've learned a couple of things.
1. Forget anything you heard or anyone told you about any activation cable as you have a 1/4" jack and the "activation" cable is for XLR Jacks.
2. I know nothing about xBox and never heard of plugging anything other than a game guitar in it anyway, but be that as it may... just go to your local music store and say "hey... can I plug this into an acoustic amp?" They'll hand you a cable, and off you go and will likely help you if you need it.
Out of curiosity, does the tuner work? If it does, than it's probably safe to assume there is audio happening in the pre-amp... My guess is, you just need to plug it into a real guitar amp to know for sure if it has output.
But the tuner working is a good start.
Let us know how it goes. Hopefully Friday we can get it all sorted out.
If the tuner works, but no audio, (assuming volume turned up and all that), than likely the wire that connects the jack to the pre-amp on the inside unplugged. The can comes out easily and you can see in and plug it back in IF that's the case.

There's a "Rocksmith" CD (not Rock Star) that supposedly lets you play "any real guitar" with a 1/4" output jack into an Xbox, but it requires a special "Rocksmith Real Tone" cable:

Assuming this is the CD the kid was using, he may not have had the proper cable. If he did, the problem may lie elsewhere.

There have been a couple different games released for consoles (Platstation, Xbox, etc.) that allow you to use a standard electric guitar plugged into the console. "Bandfuse" and "Rocksmith" are two I know of, (there may be more.) BUT: Those games requires proprietary cables to interface with the game console.
It sounds like the op is trying to plug into an Xbox, not an amp. The only way to do that is with a special proprietary cable sold by the video game developer. He'd need to check GameStop or some similar place to find one. (The guy who brought over the game disc should know that.)
Also, those games/cables work with electric guitars with passive pickups. I don't know if they will work properly with an A/E with a preamp.
