Hi everyone, so as stated in the subject title, I'm currently writing a research paper for college and am looking for "experts" of Ovation guitars to interview. It can be done either over the phone or email, but email would probably be best. I'd really like to get in touch with someone that used to work or is currently working at the mother ship in Connecticut, but honestly someone who is very knowledgeable in the Ovation community would be just a good.

Thank you all for taking the time to read this and have a wonderful day!

We're all experts.
Just ask any one of us.

Mark in Boise lives in your neighborhood.

Post your questions on this thread and people could respond here or via private message. There are some here who used to work at the Mothership, and many others who have as much knowledge as though they did.

You could contact the factory in New Hartford directly, perhaps they can answer some questions, though they are busy busy busy right now.

Hi, Samuels,
Beal and John Budny, Alpep, Mr. Ovation, Matt Smith know a lot. They all go way back. The Ovation Guitar book by Walter Carter is another good place to start, also, as well as any guitar-related/music trade magazines, like Guitar Player, Guitar World, Acoustic Guitar, etc. which are all online now, too. I wish you much success with your research paper. Ovation's history is indeed interesting, but it seems to have been buried by THE BIG 3. Thank you for helping us to further resurrect it with your research.

If Alison (Canterbury Strings) feels up to it, a phone interview of a former employee, fan and music store owner might be a good idea. I could help with a couple of books and a poor memory.

So...what would you like to know?...btw...there is a Ph.D. after my name....it stands sometimes for an actual doctorate degree, and other times for "Picking Higher and Deeper" Moody...that means above the 3rd fret.

I thought something was familiar. Samuel and I communicated a couple of times before about getting together, but other things got in the way. We'll see if we can figure this out.

I offered to let him read my copy, since I doubt there's another one as available.

That's a great offer. I don't know if he should trust your spelling, though.

Spend a few days going through the archives here. There's very little about Ovation and it's history that hasn't been discussed at some point.

And don't forget ... "Glen is an anomaly". Very important point. ;-)

We're going to get together so Samuel can take a look at the information I have, mostly the Book, and he can finish his research from there. The Book is out of date, but much of the recent history can be filled in from the archives here.

I just wanted to say thank you too everyone that responded to this post, you all provided great avenues for my research that I'm currently perusing! Beal, I would be honored to have you proof my paper once I get to that point. Until then, thank you all very much!

Absolutely. I think a lot of us would appreciate reading it when it's done.

Hi Sameuls..

If you haven't seen these yet, here are a few URLs for Ovation factory tours online.

This one is a half-hour and informative to watch:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWB22iSrD98

This one is shorter and less detailed, but has some things the other one doesn't:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gkr5fZ4OY6g

And another shortie with no narration, just CNC machinery.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSOdMaBV4bQ

I don't know if these will post as active links, so you may have to copy and paste to your browser.
Hope they help. Good luck with your paper. A great topic to choose!

Looks like we'll have a mini-Ovation gathering in Boise. He'll probably need additional source materials after that, particularly for the recent history.

That was interesting. Turns out Sam and I had met before. His mom and I used to work together and she brought him over to check out guitars about 10 years ago. I remembered he had just bought a Celebrity and I showed him the USA models I had back then. He got hooked and now has more Adamas guitars than I do. A couple of Ovation geeks had a long conversation about different bowls.
His writing assignment is supposed to be fairly narrow, so it might be something like his history with Ovation guitars, but he has a bunch of reading material for the weekend and we'll see how it goes.
After he left, I remembered that 10 years earlier he was trying to remember the name of some guy he had heard on an oldies station. It was Jim Croce. We'll have to revisit that next time.

A research paper on Ovation guitars without input from Glenn Hess, DaveKell, or Heather38DD is simply NOT complete.

I know, but Sam has page limitations and can't use an internet forum as a primary source. What kind of rule is that, anyway? I believe everything that anybody ever said on the OFC, so all the information I gave him came straight from here. I forgot to tell him about string tubes. I'll try to catch that before his final draft.
