Location: moline, illinois | Hey guys I acquired another guitar this weekend,It's a 1981 custom legend 1158-1 12 string slothead in sunburst finish.I got it off GC.com from atlanta geogia so I didn't get to make a close inspection until it arrived. It sounds great, plays pretty good, action is a touch high but it looks like the saddle has plenty of room to be lowered.
The top looks fantastic for being 35 years old, bridge looks like it was lifting at some point but repaired with a very tiny gap,no bellying, neck plays great but it has had a headstock repair which coming from GC they failed to tell me about when I was asking all kinds of questions about the guitar,it was also supposed to come with a case but when they opened the box at my local GC it was simply bubble-wrapped,I asked and they found the case at the atlanta store and will ship it to me but what dorks to ship a 35 year old vintage/rare guitar without its case in winter.
Its a rare model from what I understand so it could have been in worse shape and I would have kept it,I love custom legends and this is the 7th CL for my collection, someone needs to ban me from the internet for awhile this is my second guitar this year and if I had the cash there's a 2005 collectors I would go after..LOL
Multiple pics attached plus some of three of my 12 strings the "sunburst triplets"

What is that elite? Looks like the 1538 with new preamp...? |

Yes the old O's have the best bursts!!!
The Elite is a 1992 1758 with the OP24 preamp.
The slothead Custom Legends are hard to find which is why I bought it off one pic and a few questions with a GC rep to verify what it was,he didn't even know it was a Custom Legend, sometimes I feel bad for the guys who trade in there guitars at GC cause they don't know there models but then again how else could I get some of the deals I have.

I had a similar set of "Sunburst Twins", a 1758 identical to yours, and a Pacemaker (now living with AstroDan), that looks a lot like your new Custom Legend, without the bling. |

Location: Muenster/Germany | Congratulations! The old *58 is my favourite Ovation. And the old sunbursts are the best. Maybe some day I´ll find a nice Elite like yours, too.
Your guitar would be even a -little- better if you would make some corrections on the bridge, the strings are uneven esp. the D and G, little corrections will make playing easier.
And maybe you can be glad that this gem was shipped in bubblefoil, this might have been a better shield than the Ovation case with it´s incredibly insufficient inlays. I experienced several damaged Ovation guitars when they had been shipped in the case without enough additional outside padding. |
