Location: Earth·SolarSystem·LocalInterstellarCloud·Local Bub | In a recent exchange with another OFCer... on this topic, I had realized something about this alternative tuning... that for some, is old news and completely obvious... but, for other's, who don't explore alternatives, might make an alternative tuning much less scary ...
Here's something that makes sense to most anyone who knows basic cowboy chords...
Go get your guitar then come back and read this with it...
So...
Double-Dropped-D tuning is simply tuning down - from concert (standard) pitch- the top and bottom strings to D
So strings are tuned to:
D A D G B D
Notice that all the interior strings are still the same as concert pitch.
Knowing that, Let's work through the first position Major Chords that are made by fretting ONLY interior strings i.e. 2,3,4,5
Strum and "A" chord...
sounds ok! (now try "A7"...)
Skip "B" chord for now cause it requires fretting the first string
So, go to "C" ...
it sounds good too
Skip "D" for now for the same reason we skipped "B"
Strum "E"...
It too sounds good (now try "E7")
Next, do the same for the first position Minor chords that are made on the interior strings and you realize that many of these sound great too!
Now for the chords that require the Top and Bottom strings to be fretted in first position....
Let's take "D" to start...
Fret a regular first position "D" and strum. It sounds ok BUT, if you leave the first string open and strum ALL 6 strings... it's magnificent!
Now try "G"in first position, but again, DON'T fret strings 1&6. "G" becomes a single finger chord and strum all chords
You get the point... Now just continue to experiment with chord forms you know by fretting or not fretting the 1 and 6 strings...
This is an attempt to offer those 'round here, who are tentative about trying alternative tunings , because they don't think they have enough knowledge to venture into them... I am NO expert... |

G = 1st & 6th strings at 5th fret
A = Barre the 1st four strings at 2nd fret
D = 2nd & 3rd strings at 7th fret
C = 2nd & 3rd strings at 5th fret
Em = 4th, 5th & 6th at 2nd fret
There's a bunch of others, but I have to PLAY them, and not THINK/type 'em.
I use this tuning a lot . . . |

Location: Scotland | The next step is to go to a Shubb Partial, Kyser Shortcut or ThirdHand covering strings 5, 4 & 3 at the 2nd fret. Then it gets real interesting. I have a partial capo website about to go live soon, I'll post details as soon as it's done. |
