Beautiful guitar. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | It sounds wonderful, that's about all I can say. You close you eyes and listen to it and you'll immediately remember why you fell in love with Ovations back in day. It's like an Ovation time capsule. Why in the hell they ever stopped making Ovations like this I'll never know ...
The idea for this guitar actually started in my head back in 2004 when they introduced the Custom Legend Reissue. Nice guitar, but I said to myself - shit if you're gonna make a reissue why not go back to the guitar that REALLY started the whole ball rolling. So I was bouncing ideas around in my head but just never got the project off the ground. It was gonna be an expensive guitar by Ovation standards and stuff like U681's, KOA's, 47RI's and OFC guitars got in the monetary mix.
Then along last year came the 1627 Glen Campbell Reissue. Seriously, THAT was just about the nicest sounding wooden Ovation I had ever heard. If you wondered why I sold off my 1537's, THAT guitar was the reason. Not only was that guitar so phenomenal, but it set off a spark in my head. I said HEY why not use THIS as the foundation for my dream Glen Campbell guitar I had been thinking about for the past few years.
So Al and I worked out the details on the order. The guitar would be as close of a replica to Glen's original (now owned by Bluebird) as we could get. With one really cool exception - This shiny bowl would be an ARTIST depth. Shiny bowls were never made in Artist depth, so except for maybe a few customs this guitar would be very are and unique. Pure acoustic-only of course. BTW, hope you don't mind Wayne but for the 12th fret inlay I actually sent the factory a close up photo of your guitar!
So the overall spec is the following:
Top - 1627 reissue AAA spruce top
Bracing - Ovation A brace
Binding - Aged 5 ply binding
Rosette - Inlaid original style
Bowl - Artist depth hand laid, shiny finish
Label - None
Strap buttons - Gold
Bridge - Brazilian rosewood 5 point
Saddle - Acoustic only
Electronics - None
Neck - 5 piece maple and mahogany
Nut Width - 1 11/16 inch
Fretboard - Ebony with aged binding and side dots
Inlays - Diamond shape MOP, GC initials at 12th fret
Headstock - Faced in dark stained walnut
Logo - Gold
TRC - Glen Campbell signature
Tuners - Gold Schaller
So that's it. Just a wonderful sounding and playing guitar that to me is a real piece of nostalgia. I put it on my knee and damn if it doesn't feel like 1970. It's a guitar that just makes you smile. And let me not forget a HUGE THANK YOU to Al for working with me on this and bringing it to life.
Dave
PS - I've been critical of Ovation in the past over some quality control issues, so I would be remiss to not mention anything about this latest order. Children cover your eyes and ears. THIS GUITAR IS DEAD FUCKING PERFECT. PERIOD. |

Location: SoCal | This guitar is one reason why next year, I'm going to order a 1117 w/ a few tweaks. It will be a Legend, acoustic only, with a deep hand laid bowl. I'll get the new neck system so it will be very very light. As for cosmetic mods, maybe the Brazillian 5 point bridge and stained headstock. But aside from that, a straight 1117 w/ overlaid rosette.
Between that as a pure acoustic and my 1627 RI for plugging in, I think I could sell the rest of my wood top O six steel strings and be happy. It would be a Legend version of the 30th CL, and if you'll recall, I believe Al made mention that those sounded like old D28's (but with the Ovation vibe).
This would be the guitar I thought I was getting 30 years ago when I got my old 1117 (w/ the VT bracing that sounds like sh*t).... |

I had the opportunity to play a 1627 RI a few month ago and it sounded tremendous, better than the Balladeer RI. As Dave's custom order is constructed the same way the sound must be tremendous as well. Congrats, well done!

Location: SoCal | While Ovation advertised the GC RI as an exact duplicate of the original, it's not. First, it's a mid depth bowl, not an artist bowl, so it's slightly deeper. Second, it's got the new neck system which is better than the original truss rod and lighter (much lighter) than the K-bar. The neck, where the neck meets the headstock is the modern style, and the angle of the headstock is the current angle (7 degrees of Darren Wallace?).
What does all that mean? A vastly superior instrument over the original. I love these guitars! |

I don't think that's right about the mid depth bowl. I believe the 1627 reissue is a hand laid cloth Artist bowl. I know my shiny one pictured above is hand laid Artist depth.
You've got a reissue, go look at the damn thing! There never was a modern molded mid depth bowl in non-cutaway, so I can't believe they would do one just for this reissue. Of course I could be wrong.

Location: SoCal | Dave, I've compared it with my 1773LX which has a mid depth bowl, and in Kansas City, with an early 80's Country Artist which has an Artist depth bowl. The GC RI has a mid depth bowl.
Of course, if somebody at the factory has the specs and wants to correct me..... |

Location: Central Florida | I saw Paul's 1627 RI when we met up in KC a couple of months ago, and it's definitely a mid-depth bowl---in fact, I'm the one that pointed it out to him. Just to be sure, we compared it to an older Country Artist (with a true artist depth bowl) and a current mid-depth Custom Legend 12 string that were also there. |

Location: SoCal | There's an article on Jerome's website that talks about how the mid depth bowl was made in the mid 90's. Basically, they'd take a deep bowl and grind it down to the mid's depth. I suspect that the hand laid mid bowls were done the same way. |
