Location: Budd Lake, NJ | Here in New Jersey we are required to wear the helmet along with the t-shirt and shorts; me, personally, I wouldn't get on a bike with anything less than full body armor, if you could get me on one at all. (Cars, deer and bear have no respect for anything that walks, runs, or motors along on two wheels......) Where I live, we've had way too people killed in biking accidents lately....

At the same time, how did dressing up in a leotard two sizes too small, padding stuffed everywhere, and wearing mascara, to run around a field with a little ball, become the epitome of "the manly sport" of football..
In the voice of Craig Ferguson..
Wearing a tight leotard.... padding... mascara...

I see folk riding with shorts and flip-flops! If they are at a stop light, I do tell them they are idiots!

I sold my bike when I slid underneath a car. No broken bones but had the skin flayed off my legs. Sold the bike. Didn't want to tempt my luck again.
I was wearing boots and thick jeans. T-shirt and helmet.
As to football, it's a ridiculous game played by steriod puffed giants. They wear the pads because the hits could be fatal, especially if you're a normal person.
The footballers wear all that gear because they are more valuable than a motorcyclist. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | My nephew is still recovering from his wreck. Had a full-face helmet and a jacket on, but broke his arm in several places when he thinks the engine seized on his dirt bike. His pal got it all on video. He's a mechanic and after 4 months he still can't lift his arm over his head, so he may lose his job and career. Our bodies just aren't made to crash into stuff at 50 mph, helmet or not. |

Plus horses don't pass semi's as well, though they do pass other things. |

IMHO, anyone who rides in shorts and a tee shirt is a candidate for the Darwin Awards. |

Wearing improper clothing is an example of not managing risk very well. From personal observations, I don't see many riders without proper attire in Colorado. Some, of course, but the majority of riders I see, and 99% of those who I personally know, wear protective gear. |

I don't know if he is planning on getting another one when the weather gets warm again.
He always wore a helmet, gloves and long pants.
Me I'll pass. |

I was surprised to read recently that many working cowboys view their horses as tools, not pets, and actually prefer ATVs for the same job. |

Location: Budd Lake, NJ | I've been on one, two different times, two different sizes, different road conditions, both as a passenger. Didn't enjoy either time--and even the fact that I holding onto someone I liked very much wasn't enough to offset the fear factor. Cowardly? Maybe--that mode of transportation just is not for me, I guess. (Although I saw a bright metallic turquoise-colored three-wheeled one for sale awhile back that made me drool all over my steering wheel--then I figured out how many guitars I could buy for the price they were asking, and that was the end of that! Nothing like a good dose of perspective..... ;) :D ) |

Location: Earth·SolarSystem·LocalInterstellarCloud·Local Bub | If you'd ever played American Football (high school/collegiate and beyond), you'd understand...
I played football from pee-wee league through college... and most people can't truly appreciate the severity of impacts one constantly endures. I also played international club Rugby... NO COMPARISON with American Football... a little cauliflower-ear and the occasional shoe in the head is High Tea measured against being blind-sided by a Defensive End or clocked by an unseen tackler in full gear at full speed...
There are a staggering amount of former pro-players who are severely impaired as a result of their careers... Earl Campbell at 52 years old can't even walk (literally) and is just one of many others.
As for motorcycles... The annual fatality rate is nearly .0007% of registered riders. That JUST fatalities... not injuries. And though that number looks small... it's by orders of magnitude, more than automobile fatalities (about 25x the rate).
Which might suggest (among other factors) that even protective gear on a cycle has limited effect.
-Incidentally the fatality rate of football induced injuries is about .0000030% |

Location: UK | Wabbit , you got a wing ??, one of them massive bikes which has electric windows and air con, wow, they are just so heavy , but bright and always shiny and pristine, ive never seen one of those bikes which hasnt been gleaming and they are always ridden by people over 40 on Sundays . In the UK its the law to wear helmets and think its the heat and the pose factor here in Florida but i would say the majority i have seen are the flip flop t shirt brigade |

Location: Munich, Germany | I agree with Andrea - riding a bike in a T-Shirt and Flip-Flops is damn stupid - if you don't keep the rubber side down.
Human skin sliding over the asphalt acts like a vaccum cleaner that absorbs all the small stones and dirt - and leaves a very unlovable, burned appearing.
But, when it comes to a real crash, leather (not helmets) just protect you from that vacuum cleaner thing. A human body is still much more vulnerable than stone, metal etc..
I have always worn horsehide pants and jackets (no, I did not have to feed them), the best helmet you could get for money, Red Wing's steeltoed Engineer boots - but when this car came out of control and hit me- my wear just provided me from getting all the things mentioned above.
The guard rail was still a little more massive than me.
Til then, I am more the "sitting kind", but, hey, without my wear - would I still be that very handsome guy that I am :D :D :D ?
So, put your leathers on before kickstarting your bike!

Riding motorcycles in itself isn't as dangerous as a lot of other things people do. Of course accidents happen, and of course you're less likely to die surrounded by airbags. There are safer ways to ride than others, some people are just too stupid or lazy to learn or follow them.
Rock climbing is also popular. Those who do it irresponsibly usually spend their later years in wheelchairs or on life support, or on a shelf in an urn.
If Jeff didn't subscribe to safe practices in his line of work, he or other people could get killed.
Lack of common sense is the chlorine in our gene pool. |
