Location: Canada | I have started to get interested in a 12-fret steel string guitar and am wondering what Ovation models have been made. I think there were the Josh White, Folklore, FD-14, UT681, and Koa Special, as well as a few 12 strings in the 70s. Are there any others? |

I also have a 1618 40th Anniversary Glen Campbell 12 string from 2006.

Location: Canada | Thanks, it looks like these don't come up for sale very often (especially Josh White RI, U681T, FB-14) and there seems to be no current Folklore AX (or whatever in the lineup). That's too bad ... I certainly hope that the upcoming 50th Anniversary will include some sort of update or revision of this iconic style! |

Location: Phoenix AZ | I wouldn't bet on it. While I an a "fan" and own several 12 fretters of various makes, they only appeal to a small subset of the market. Ovation being a fairly small player in the grand scheme of things, and USA Ovation only being a small subset of that, and 12 fretters only attractive a minescule amout of potential buyers ... well, you get the picture.
If it was me, I would have a business plan around building the minimum number of models which could be sold to the maximum number of people. But what the heck do I know ... |

Location: SW Mintsoda | I often scratch my head at Ovation's numbering system ... why have 12 fret guitar models with a '14' in the model name/number/nomenclature (e.g., FD-14, KA-14)?
As to whether a 12-fretter is marketable now, it is a growing market overall, and if a 12-fret model can be voiced/braced to maximize some tonal advantages, it could be a distinguishable model in the line (also give it a 1 3/4" nut, and maybe a slotted headstock). Ovation could show some market savvy by introducing such a model (or reissue).
But I also get the idea of a "minimum number of models to reach a maximum market"... |

The 14 goes all the way to the beginning ...
The original Josh White shiny bowl was called model No. 4
The Folklore was the first with 4 digit model number, hence 1114
The Folklore Deluxe substituted FD for the first 2 digits, hence FD14
The Kaman Academy substituted KA for the first 2 digits, hence KA14 |
