Location: big island | hey folks! i've been enjoying poking around here early this morning and catching up on all things O, especially the exciting DW news.
i finally graduated with a bachelors of science in nursing last saturday and will soon be joining the ranks of the employed. i'm thinkin' there will be some discretionary funds to acquire another O in the not-too-distant future; perhaps one of the remaining KOAs al has...
it is great to see most of the old-timers still here and active in keeping this cozy little corner of cyberworld alive.

Location: big island | mahalo for the congrats! i haven't had much time to play over the past four years so i have been slackin' on the slack key stuff.
i did compose a song that i played at our graduate nurse pinning ceremony last friday night. the uiniversity's performing arts center was nearly packed. i dug out an old black cowboy hat and stuck some red crosses on the front and back of it to set the mood for my comedic country-flavored song. here's the lyrics, some of which won't make any sense unless you were there:
The BSN Blues or The BS’n Blues
This here’s a night of great anticipation
Tomorrow we’ll be walkin’ capped and gowned at graduation
And I gotta admit, I wondered if I’d ever see this day
Cuz it’s been a long road, and it ain’t been easy
Sometimes scary and frequently queasy
But I don’t think we killed anyone along the way
So this BSN requires two years of pre-reqs
With no time for sleepin’, and less time for se…surfin’
The “reqs” part should be spelled W-R-E-C-K-S
I had to keep the grades up, at least As and Bs
And when I survived an exam suspiciously called the “TEAS”
It was, “Adios life” and “Hello 2 more years of stress”
But my heart skipped a beat when I heard I’d been selected
Hearts are kinda my thing so I was feeling quite connected
To my stethoscope, which I proudly wore wherever I ventured
I learned TPR’s, BP’s and O2 sats
How to logroll a patient and give him a bath
And the best evidence-based practice in how to scrub his dentures
Some of the other things I learned really messed with my head
Like how to make an occupied hospital bed
And I still don’t know which leg goes first up or down the stairs on crutches
Ya’ get your patient information on the night before
Think ya’ planned your day, but when working the floor
There’s no time to hydrate or urinate or masticate your lunches
Nurses get exposed to lots of body fluids and blood
So I pondered why us students had to wear white scrubs
Figured we were walkin’, talkin’ targets to blame when stuff went wrong
So imagine my surprise and perspective changes
When patients said we looked just like a band of angels
Still, this “angel” couldn’t wait to disrobe when he got home
Strugglin’ to make it to the end of the first semester
Some of us got Netflix-distracted by a fellow named Dexter
But we did learn a lot about the coagulatory properties of blood
Then there was that addictive show with all its leather-bound drama
Where the doctor got murdered by a motorcycle mama
And the “crows” flew high over that Charming neighborhood
Well, they teach ya’ about assessment and nursing diagnosis
For things like cirrhosis, acidosis, and halitosis
About planning and implementing your therapeutic nursing interventions
You’ll wear out your synapses with critical thinkin’
And writin’ up those care plans can drive ya’ to drinkin’
Or give ya’ a case of non-essential hypertension
Y’know you’ve arrived when all those abbreviations
Roll off your tongue without any hesitation
And nursing jargon is fluently spoken over your cafeteria tray
But there’s one nursing phrase I’ll always remember
Spoken by an illustrious faculty member
Wait for it…”No frickin’ way!”
I’m sure there are many memories among us
One of my favorites is massaging a fundus
Who could forget about “stretchy pants”, Frank and Izzie or Gretchen?
And at the risk of sounding just a bit cynical
Remember when JAHCO’s visit prevented our clinicals?
The other frustrations are far too numerous to mention
So here I stand needing an anxiolytic
Cuz NCLEX is next and I hope we all get it
ATI has kinda helped me feel the power
Without a Davis “Vitamin D” to help ease the pain
And to relieve some of this ICP from my brain
I took the plunge with Waianae off the Coconut Island towers
At this point in my song, it wouldn’t be prudent
If I didn’t take a line or two to thank my fellow students
What an awesome class that helped this ol’ boy make it through
And in this room are the world’s finest nursing professors
I know they never intended to raise my blood pressure
But there’s an ironic disconnect between good health and nursing school
I thank everyone here for enduring this spiel
Hope it didn’t spoil the appetite for your next meal
If you’re considering being a nurse, I didn’t mean to torment ya’
Cuz at the end of the day as a nurse reflects
Helping others is fulfilling and as good as it gets
So if ya’ sign up, just tell’em ol’ “Roger” sent ya

Welcome back
you're so right, damon! as a matter of fact the family and i are headed to kona side in an hour for 4 days of resort style rest and relaxation. that will probably cost us as much as a trip to the PNW. thanks for the invite and the welcome nevertheless. |

Location: Rego Park, NY, | Congratulations Randy!! I was also thinking about you. I didn't realize that much time past since you ask for my help on controlled substances. This past winter I decided to get my Pharmacist license in Florida. Though it may not have been as difficult as you getting the degree. I know how hard it is to get my old brain cells back to work studying for an exam. I only had to take the Florida Pharmacy law exam because they excepted my NAPLEX (Nation Pharmacy Board exam score from 30 years ago. I had to take the law exam twice. The first time a week before Thanksgiving. The passing grade is 75. I got a 74 (OUCH!!). I took it again just before Christmas and passed. I got my Florida license in the mail and the date that was on my first license was January 6th. That 's my birthday. So that made getting the license extra special.
Again, Congratulations and best wishes on your new career. As with any other profession there will be good days and those not so good. Those good days can be very rewarding and memorable.

hey phil, that "drug consultation" seems so very long ago. thanks for remembering and for the congrats. i will be studying for the NCLEX exam over the next month and then flying to Honolulu to take it. i completed a predictor test a few weeks ago which indicates the probability of passing the NCLEX the first time. i got a 99%, so am not overly anxious but don't want to be overly confident either.
you may have heard of the new school of pharmacy here that has been named after senator daniel inouye. it is quite a big deal in academics and for the state overall.
as a nurse, one of the things about modern medicine that troubles me is the high incidence of polypharmacy. this seems to be most prevalent in hospitals that employ hospitalists.
anyway, thanks for the encouragement and it is good to see you still on board here, phil. aloha! |

thinkin' i will delete my FB since i am out of school now and do the YT thing again. i don't do tablature so the video(s) should assist in learning this relatively easy manner of playing guitar. "minimum effort, maximum pleasure": another reason it is called slack key! : ) |

thanks d'ovation. school was a success but amidst the shortage of nursing staff on this island, there are actually more layoffs occurring, or the local hospitals are preferring to hire traveling nurses hoping to contain costs. i am considering relocating to another island or to the mainland to gain experience by working in a training hospital.
kinda crazy having to make decisions like this at 58 years of age...
(not sure why i am responding to d'ovation but the quote from your post says "merlin666")

hi moody,
i cringed reading your post! that you should automatically think of me while reading the manifesto is...(i can't find the right adjective.) but then you wrote you were glad i was back and that made me issue a sigh of relief.
the song i wrote for my graduation is actually country-flavored. it is a talking song similar to "uneasy rider" or even "a boy named sue". |

so you are a "registered nerd"? you are so right! spending time milking the "cow" in order to get reimbursement and to keep from getting sued takes precedence over therapeutic time at the bedside. nevertheless, thank you. |

hi mike!
great to hear from you. i still have the Ovation banner and think of you each time i see it. congrats to violetta!
she is very astute in going after the FNP. she will entirely benefit pursuing that route with the changing tide in american-style healthcare. that option is on my plate as well, however it is quite costly. i know of a few FNPs and APRNs who have accumulated nearly 100K in debt for three years of schooling. nuts!! luckily, i made it through the BSN on grants and scholarships. my daughter, katy. who is now a nurse in asheville, is giving birth in august. i will most likely be there for a week or two. perhaps we can connect then? |

Thanks for the tip. I've got Keola Beamer and Mark Nelson's book, Learn to play Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, as well as Mark Nelson's Old Time Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar on top of the Ozzie Kotani book.
I've also got Ozzie's two instructional DVDs and Ledward Kaapana's DVD, as well as a bunch of CDs worth of ki ho'alu music.
I'll have to pick up the Keola Beamer video some time though. |

I am playing loud, maybe you'd hear it.

"taropatch" which is an open G.
detune your 6th (low E) a couple notes to D, detune your 5th (A) a couple notes to G, leave 4th, 3rd, and 2nd strings in standard tuning, detune 1st (high E) a couple notes to D. (D-G-D-G-B-D). |

You should check out some of the other ki ho'alu stuff on Youtube, Nancy. It's wonderfully relaxing stuff.
Ovation guitars are pretty popular in Hawaii too, so it's also fun to play spot the O when you watching |
