| Got the hankerin' for an old Ovation and found one on the bay site. Structurally it was sound, but it was sure dirty. Particularly the fretboard:

| The top was some scratched up and the rosette was loose. So glued the rosette on, used my swirl remover stuff followed by a good wax and hand buff:

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | Now THAT is one good-looking Ovation! I love a burst-finish with all that abalone! And what's not to love about finding the diamond in the rough eh? The same thing happened with my Flag Custom Legend. It looked even worse and needed a new tuning machine when I got it. But after all the grime and crud came off, it looked brand new underneath. Even my wife, whose patience has been stretched to the limit by my guitar fixation said "WOW!" when she saw it for the first time. Congrats on a great find! |

I don't know WHY they sound better than other A-braced Legends but they do. Maybe it's the carved bridge. Or more than likely it's because they were more expensive so the best sounding tops were selected for them. I'm just glad I've got mine and will NEVER part with it. |

Used to be the catalogs and website gave the Custom Legend a separate distinction as a model line from the Legend.

| Well, that "thing" on the side works. And both the stereo and mono jacks work as well. |

Location: sitting at my computer | Congrats! Nice job on the clean up too. I enjoy the 1667 I've got. It's not as fancy as its CL siblings, but still sings pretty sweet. imho FYI, ya might be interested in seeing this Cutaway Roundbacks info sheet over on Jerome's site. From what I've read, and can see on my 1667, these first generation cutaway Os (models: 1661, 1667, 1677, and 1669) were built by literally cutting away the section from a full-sized bowl (since no molds for a cutaway bowl existed yet) and then a lyrachord (fiberglass) patch was hand-laid in to form the cutaway, along with additonal support bracings. Dunno if that has anything to do with why they sound so nice or not, or if it's just those A-braced spruce tops. Another interesting tidbit over on Ovationtribute.com is this Ovation Legend Cutaway Special Prototype. BTW - Miles, if you're reading this, the FAQ's Ovation Model Reference erroneously lists the 1661 and 1667 as having shallow bowls, but they have deep bowls, and the 1677 is listed as having a deep bowl, but it has a shallow bowl. Refer to the Cutaway Roundbacks info sheet. |

Location: Jet City | There's something specific with the 166X model Legends that seem to please me (both Legend and Custom Legend from this year.)
It makes me wonder if the bowl was manufactured in a different way after the new cutaway molds were built.
Here was the one I put the Op50 in. It was a 1667. It made it's was to SD after me...
I still think the non-cutaway A-braced Legends pre Kaman bar are the sweetest sounding. I don't actually have a 1619, but I have my Anniversary. I've seen several of them floating around, and at STUPID low prices. There's on at GC for under $500 right now. I've always liked them. It was one of the first departures from their standard offerings with things like the multi laminated headstock and heel (like Adamas II), herringbone, snowflake inlays, etc.
Anyway, I'm going on a tangent. The 166X Legends are some of the best, congrats on the find! |

| This old CL sounds so nice. I put Martin Acoustic SP lights on it. Action is low, no buzzing (thank goodness). I did dress the frets whilst I had it apart, but not too much. I'm just really pleased with how this old beauty turned out. I get to gig it Tuesday evening for the first time. That's gonna be fun!!

Location: Muenster/Germany | So YOU were the one who was bidding more than me. Congratulations, what a guitar, I guessed from the pics but I had no PC when the auction was ending. Good to know it´s in good hands now.
Thus I have a little money left for the next auction on ebay, a seemingly well preserved Patriot! Let´s see what will happen... |
