Searching the Internet and this forum, the best I could find were the letter + 3 digit serial numbers ended with "L" around '73, but no mention of "M" series. Is it a safe assumption that Ovation did a series of "M" that didn't make the list? As it has a rectangular New Hartford label, I assume it would be sometime in the early 70's; would that be correct?

Since nobody is answering, I will let you know that some people have seen this post.
As to you guitar... I have an Artist with an "M" series serial number and a rectangular paper label.
I asked a similar question...
You are correct in that it is from the Early 70's.
Probably around 1973.
This is about the time that Ovation transitioned to the Silver Foil label.

Allen, I briefly owned a 71 Legend with an alphnumeric M tag

We have talked about it before on the forum.  So there are several threads about these last tags.  I thought 71 was the lastest that they ran, but Ovation was very efficient and rarely wasted a thing back in those days, so there is probably no telling. I do believe that the silver foil labels started appearing possibly late in 71 and for sure in 72. There is a thread somewhere that speaks to a transition time where the foil and paper were both being used at the same time.
