Location: Frozen Tundra of Minnesota | Can you please explain these two acronyms:
Adamas SMT and CVT, what do they stand for, what is the difference?
I have tried to find the answers, and looked on Ovation Tribute, but just don't understand what they are.
Thank you in advance for your help! |

Doesn't matter... What you really want is a textured top.

Does the SMT have a wood look to it?
It kind of looks like it in the picture.
Are these Adamas II? Or completely separate Models from the I & II's?

The SMTs do have a 'woody' look to them, I was told it was due to the CF finishing process. May or may not be true.
They're more like Adamas IIIs, but I think that distinction would have gone to the 'Q' models (there are threads in the archives about them).
Congrats on the 1687 - it's widely believed that the textured tops are (for the most part) sonically superior to the SMT and CVT models. At least until the ME and 2080 models came out. Those are pretty stonkin good, too. |

The SMT has a wood like appearance but prettier, its the unidirectional carbon fiber with a killer laquer finish,if you see a ruby red graphite one it does a color change as the light shifts across it,the SMT and CVT both came after the Adamas I or II and are a totally separate catagory.call it the working man's adamas if you will, the ME is a SMT signature model 12 string made for melissa etheridge.

As a result I have beeen looking for a 1687 (RI) for some time, but obviously have not been nearly as diligent as you have been in tracking down the goodies. http://www.ovationfanclub.com/megabbs/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=34292&posts=11&start=1

I have been extremely Blessed by Incredible Friends! Tony has been instrumental in teaching me, and letting me Adopt some of his favorite charges!
Thank you for the link - I will go read it too - there are so many different models, tops, etc, I have allot of catching up to do. Before I just loved the guitar and sound, now that I am learning the history, I want to know it all! A Full Appreciation of everything that went/goes into them. In some small way, it makes it feel like it's okay for me to have a few of the really good ones, when I appreciate and know everything that went into them. Anyone can just buy a guitar, but I want to *know* mine.
Thank you Beal! Now what is a SMu top??? That Gorgeous Ruby Shiny one??? |

Action is High.
Broken headstock.
Looks like a crack in the finish by the low E string near bridge.
Needs the frets leveled or replaced.
Has been ridden hard and put away wet.
You could probably reset the neck yourself.
As well as do a better repair on the headstock.
And live with the booboo on the top.
But there are better guitars to spent $900 on. JMHO.

I used to be able to do that with horses, but I have a long way to go with the Guitars!!
I am not buying for a while, I just like to keep up on what is out there, and see all the different Ovations I have never seen. There is a Traveler on ebay right now, that I have never seen, even on The Ovation Tribute! Really different looking Little Beastie!
But I am going to have you check over anything I see before I buy one if you don't mind? You really helped me on that Patriot/No Box debacle, and I really appreciate that!!
Tony just sent me a picture of my 3 Adoptees that will be coming in soon, so I have to behave myself for a bit! LOL!!! (well, at least where it comes to Guitars!) I think these 3 will keep me very busy for a while, and I can't wait to hear the 2 Adamas in person, I have never heard one in person!!!
And they are SO Gorgeous!! I think the 1719 CL-30 is probably the most Beautiful non-custom order I have ever seen!
My new babies: 1719 CL-30, 1687-2 Adamas, Millenium Adamas CVT (I know what that means now!!!)

You think you haven't slept waiting for them? You won't sleep at all if they all come at once. You'll have to play every song you know on each guitar and the overload will be too much.
Heck, the most I ever got in one day was two and it was overwhelming. I tried to go to bed but every time my head hit the pillow I thought of something else I needed to play on them. I think it was about 4AM before I finally nodded off.

That's what I am expecting too! No sleep, constant peeking and playing! LOL!!! And now that the snow is gone, I can go out on the deck at night and play under the stars too!!
I plan to grab them all up and head downstairs - I very wisely did not teach my dogs to do steps (except one), so when I go downstairs, I am all by myself! I am going to turn it into my Nan-Cave, and hang all my new Pretties!!! I have a feeling I will be downstairs ALLOT, which is good, it hasn't been used in a couple years, and is really nice down there (Cedar Woodwork and a nice Fireplace). It will be wonderful to have my own spot, no dogs, no birds, no phones! Just Ovations and Adamas! I may get a dorm fridge to put Mt Dew in, I will never have to go upstairs! |

(again, not to sound stupid, but what does SWMBO stand for?)
From the FAQ section within the FAQ section:
Q: I keep seeing people write SWMBO, GAS and Mothership in
their posts. What do those mean?
A: SWMBO stands for for She Who Must
Be Obeyed, a term of endearment from our male
participants for their significant others, who often can't
understand why we could possibly need yet another guitar.
Our female participants often refer to their significant others as
HWMBC (or P), for He Who Must Be Coddled (or
Pampered). |

OK, here's an idea...open just one. Play with it for two hours. THEN open another, play IT for two hours. Repeat the process for all four of them. After that you'll still be up all night anyway. If I didn't have to run the store I'd be out to help you, but alas, you are on your own. |

The kids usually would rather play with the boxes! I don't think that's going to be the case with Nancy though.
Hey Nancy, after you've posted pics maybe you can post a video or something so we can hear them too? Of course if you're like me that won't be possible. I'm such a dinosaur I can't even post still pics, let alone do a video and post it. |

You know how you hear those Adamas on YouTube? And you sit there absolutely mesmerized?
That isn't ANYthing like hearing one (or two) in person!! There is NO other sound like this 1687 when you just strum it once, and it goes on, and on, and on!! The clear, bell like quality, with deep bass, and clear, sustaining highs is unlike anything I have ever heard. It is hard to comprehend that this is actually mine, and I can hear this now, anytime I want to! And now that I know what went into it's design and creation I can appreciate it just that much more!
You can hear EVERY note in each chord! I was happy as the dickens with my Custom Balladeers, but this is like driving a Ford (don't give me any grief, I like Fords!), compared to a Rolls Royce!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!! It is very hard to put it down, and even when you do, you can still hear it! It resonates in your ears even after you set it down!
And it is Artistically Beautiful for your eyes too!!! The pictures always made the Red look kind of dull, it is Not!!! The Red is Beautiful, Bright and Vibrant! The carved wood is warm, soft and smooth!
I just can't think of the right words to use, this is an "Experience"!!! Everything about this Guitar is Magical!!!
THANK YOU Tony for making all of this possible!!!!

First one I got years ago, I was amazed even with old strings. After restringing, I couldn't put it down.
Poor Nancy, she got four guitars in one day (included one that was repaired by Budny & crew). |

So, just going by your first impression, which one would you keep if you had to give up all the others, based on their acoustic sound?
The 1687-2 hands down! They All Sound Amazing, but that 1687-2 is Phenominal!!! There is just something about the sound, and the sustain on the notes! That is one Hellacious Guitar! They will be prying that one from my cold, dead hands, because I won't let that one go very easily!!! LOL!!!
Full Moon tonight, I am going out and see what they sound like off the deck, under the moon! |

I have tried to find the answers, and looked on Ovation Tribute, but just don't understand what they are. Thank you in advance for your help! I think the SMT and CVT was marketing lingo in the late 90s. More recently post 2010 a few new acronyms have crept up that need explanation. For example: SR or AST - I think that's "Suspension Ring" or "Suspension System" not sure of the difference GT - seems to denote an LX type neck and hand laid fiberglass bowl (therefore lighter weight) NWT - "New Woven Top" may have plywood instead of specified wood (poplar or birch) as core?
