Theres a nice video of Preston at the Acoustic Guitar Magazine web-site with his unique finger/tapping playing style. As the interview continued, he discusses his influence on Kaki King that developed her style of percussive use of the instrument. Rather than go down the proverbial rat-hole on abusing guitars, I find this video to be interesting in his use of both the neck and body of the guitar to achieve his style like Stanly Jordan, Jeff Healey and other who play using unconventional methods. Although he's playing a Bailey custom built guitar, he mentioned his prior instrument as an Ovation Long Neck!! Its also interesting that he had a pick guard material added above the sound hole apparently to protect the body of his custom guitar!
You can see his video's on YouTube. Heres one
How did these artists develop these unique sounds? Nobody told them they couldn't or they refuse to fall into the established norm!

One of the best concerts we ever attended was Preston playing to a small crowd at the bottom of a ski hill. I hadn't heard of him, but saw tickets for $10 at the local grocery store. I am not much for the percussive style, but like Gary, I was amazed at the sounds he could get from his guitar. His primary one at that time was his custom Adamas, although Yamaha sponsored him and supplied several other guitars. He does a song that is meant to sound like a guy playing a saw and it really does. It's interesting to see someone who thinks out of the box.
