So, I was searching Craig's List, as I do most days, for "Ovation Guitars", and found a new listing for a 1980 Ovation... for $50!

No phone number on the ad, listed as email response only... After getting no response on my first attempt, I sent another with my phone number.. long story short, he finally called me the next morning, but did not know what model he had.

So, I went to check it out, and to my surprise it was a model 1617, natural finish, A braced Legend! Obviously I bought it.

It is in rough condition, with a small piece knocked off one ear (more of a "Mike Tyson" than a "Van Gogh"), has a few short cracks, and one quite long crack in the body, several dings, 20 + year old strings, quite a bit of fret wear, plus the electronics did not work. I played it, and it sounded decent even with the old strings!

This is exactly what I was looking for, something I can take camping, or let my year old Grandson "help" me play, as he LOVES to do.

I spent a couple hours cleaning it, stripped out the electronics, put on new strings, and this thing sounds AMAZING! It'a s keeper for sure.

I plan to seal the cracks, and maybe replace some frets, but other than that, will leave it alone. Now I have a low cost, great sounding guitar that I am not afraid to use and abuse.

Mike Tyson actually had an extra ear--until he spit it out.
I've pretty much abandoned my list of guitars I'd like to have, but if I had one, the 1617 Reissue they did a couple of years ago would be on it. I know Al has #2 of 50, but I am not even aiming, so I can't pull the trigger.

Damon, Good idea... the worst part of the crack is right at the furthest brace, so I can't cleat it at that point, but will on the rest.

Mark, true about Tyson, but I could not think of who's ear he munched on...

Evander Hollifield. It's pretty rare when I can remember a name, but that one just popped into my head.

"Huh? I can't hear you! Speak up!"-Evander Holyfield I just want a real nice USA made classical deep bowl. That would be like looking for dolphins in a freshwater lake.

Question from a newbie: Is the legend a deep or shallow bowl?

Legends can have all the different bowl types,a 1617 would be a deep bowl, examples of others are a 1777 would be mid-depth a 2077 would be a contour bowl a 1867 would be shallow bowl so you can find a legend in any type of bowl you prefer.if you see a model you like go to the FAQs section and you can determine the specs for it there.
