I just packed-up a Non-O guitar to ship. (Sold my NT Warlock on Reverb) I was searching for shipping costs from Portland, OR to Arlington, TX... The buyer wanted it to arrive by Friday for the hubby's birthday.
Anyway... USPS Priority Mail was cheaper than UPS. And both were around $75. So it is cheaper to get it there in Three Days than it is to wait a whole week.
That was kinda disturbing. Shipping is getting expensive and slow. So it might be cheaper just to Mail guitars than to use either FedEx or UPS. And I have had a few guitars arrive by Mail lately, and they all survived the trip. Maybe that is why those people chose USPS.

I think USPS works ok. They seem to be a little cheaper. Their tracking is pretty much useless though. I sent a 12 string to Iowa last year and it took 16 days. I just sent a banjo to Midwest for $55 and an Ovation to WV for $80...Fedex If I use Fleabay, I double their freight calculator.
You're right though, it's getting very expensive
