I have tried to listen to Country Music every now & then but I cant stand it for more than 5 minutes. It makes me crazy all that drawwwllll on the voice and every song is about lying, crying or dying. It is still not as bad as hard RAP to me.I guess I am just a diehard Rock&Roll fan.
My only exception is Glen Cambell.
What are your thoughts on it.GWB

I voted "take it or leave it".

Some stuff is killer, some sucks.

Kindof like everything else.

Don't care much for the "New" offerings.
I was into the Outlaw Country of the '70s and early '80s along with Southern Rock.

I tend to agree with "Wannabee" as I am and allways will be a lover of ALL rock. However, I also beleive that in just about every Genre, there are songs that have "hooks" that really "catch me" and I enjoy.

Well, so far, I'm all by myself for liking it. I like the guitar solos, the cross over stuff, and it remains about the only genre where you can occasionally hear good pedal steel guitar. I can also understand the words, and the songs are easy to play.

GWB... Is your last name "Harris".. as in "Harris Poll"? Questions, questions always makin' me have to think and stuff.
Just as I like some classical and some movie soundtrack music, I like some country stuff, too.
Not the "cry in your beer" stuff but there is some clever & entertaining country out there.

I like "I Ain't As Good As I Once Was".
I used to be hell on wheels
Back when I was a younger man
Now my body say's you can't do this boy
But my pride say's oh yes you can
Or... "I'm Gonna Miss Her" YouTube Video

Or... Alan Jackson's... Little Bitty

"She Thinks My Tractors Sexy"
"The More I Drink, The More I Drink"

And there is more. Some patriotic, some serious, and some sillier than I can take.
IMO, country music is as much a slice of Americana as Rock & Roll. And just like R&R there is a lot of crap in the mix but if you take some time to root around in the old cellar, you might find a gem or two.
For myself, gimme some live Who, a John Williams or Danny Elfman soundtrack or a little bit of "Little Bitty", and I'll be happy.

I think most who dislike country are reacting to the accented delivery or an overall sound of what they describe as "twang". However, I feel that, in it's current form, it stands up quite well musically and vocally.

A lot of these guys are recycled rockers anyway, Garth Brooks for one. The Nashville studio guys are some serious, serious musicians.

As for subject matter, I don't care what a song is about if I like the music. If I don't like a song musically, the words are not going to change my mind.

There ARE some fine country pickers out there.
Alot of what you may hear, is the Top (whatever) stuff that is on the Corporate Radio computer-playlist, which may not be the best that the genre has to offer.
And you gotta give them (country-folk) credit for some of the subject matter of their lyrics.
It is alot more diverse than most "Rock" music.

Also, my Mom lives in Tennessee. I think that when them Country-Folk are born, they issue them a guitar, a mandolin, and fiddle with their Birth Certificate. I've seen them folks walk-up to Street Musician friends of mine in Boston, pick-up the friend's guitar and pick some awesome stuff.
Then say, "I'm from Nashville, I'm embarrassed to carry my guitar on the street, someone might think that I think I can Play!"

(I picked Take It or Leave It)

Here ya\' go GWB

It used to be on the bottom of the music totem pole for me, until they came up with rap and hip hop. The newer stuff doesn't have so much of the twang that I disliked and there are some that know more than just the cowboy chords. Many also have the best lyrics, even the funny ones. For anyone with daughters of the soon to be married age, listen to "I Loved Her First." I thought the lyrics hit pretty close to home. There's also a song by Lil Texas that I like the fingerpicking on. Having a senior moment now with names. Forgot one band and one song name.

ProfBB you and I are up..."What's with the Scotsman loving Country I hear you say?"

I love narrative songs, I love the simplicity of the melodies, serious ballads tracking their genetic history straight back to Ireland and Scotland, Love the humor in many, love the pick a fight with me attitude, love the rocking sensibility dressed up in chaps, love the musician ship of a vast majority of the lead performers (can you say Brad Paisley guitarist extrordinaire!!), love how it can make me cry, make me laugh, make me happy, make me sad, and very occasionally make me puke.

Yes, yes there is some seriously mediocre stuff in there, but on the whole most of it is far more reliable than the average week in the Pop/Rock charts so dominated by the pimpin rap artists and the bling bling diva's...very attractive to look at that Beyonce girl, but give me the beauty of Martin McBride or striking good looks of Alison Krauss any day...and if I was 15 years younger Carrie Underwood would be in my dreams often....(ahem!!)

I don't know how you can generalize and say that you don't like "country music". There are so many different kinds of country music, from George Jones to Garth Brooks to Suzy Boggus. All of it different.

Like all music (including rock and roll), some of it's good, some of it's fair, and some of it sucks....

What country's music are we talking about?

I can't take for long either but I will say there are some great country musicians and vocalists who I admire very much.

One of the great advantages of country music is its gift for pushing rock and rollers over the edge , for that alone i love Dolly and Kenny and all those others who inhabit a world a million miles from Milton Keynes or London . I appreciate any good music lyrically , melodically ,rythmicaly, music that takes me to places i havnt been and im f**!ing bored with Rap being mindlessly critised on this forum and i dont want to speculate why that genre of music seems to be universally critised here .

in my opinion, there are songs in every genre that "suck". i cannot simply generalize and say that the whole category of country music sucks. not only that, the line between the different categories is often so blurred.
do the eagles suck? maybe some folks don't care for their music but they are certainly more country oriented than any other genre. i think the blend of country and rock is a good thing.
i judge all songs individually according to my taste in music and there is music fitting all the seasons and emotions of life.
i have even found myself enjoying about three rap songs over the years.

and always remember: there's nothin' wrong with rock and roll as long as your foot's on the Rock and your name's on the roll.

Probably because some of us happen to think it is mind-numbingly repetitive, melodically absent, lyrically insulting and just plain annoying, especially when it's coming from the car behind you.

But that's ok, there are people who think the music I like sucks too.

Ohh now I did that for fun kid. Ya kinda laid it out there on a platter so I thought it might be fun to go for it. Still do.
I actually do not like to listen to rap at all, but I don't usually post about it. I gave my opinion with a "humor factor" Country does not "SUCK" I just do not like to listen to it. rap was not even on my list. Actually did not know this group regularly put it down?? Must have missed those posts. Rap does SUCK as far as this small time musician can tell. Not much there other than some clever rhyme and a political statements from one group of people, who seem to have a very narrow minded and self focused view of the world.

They do not write lyrics I can relate to..........
They do not use a musical melody or structure that I find pleasing.........
And to be honest there are dozens of examples of socially violent and racially inflaming lyrics contained in these "rap" messages that I do not like at all.........
Their image (Drug Dealing Thugs)they project to the young strong and impressionable men and women they seem to target their sales toward, is part of the problem these kids continue to live.
Er.it "SUCKS"

As for my "Does not Suck" list and many bands I have taken the time to cover. In no particular order and very incomplete;
YES
Zeppelin
Peter Gabriel
Dire Straits
The Eagles
The Who
Sting
The Police
King Crimson
Deep Purple
The Tubes
Aerosmith
Genesis
RUSH
Supertramp
PINK FLOYD

Why shouldn't Country music suck occasionally? At least 60% of EVERYthing sucks!

But I love Country Music in all it's different guises. From New Country that sounds a lot like 60's-70s pop, to traditional Cryin' 'n' Hurtin' tunes that'll tear the wallpaper right off the trailer kitchen.

It is, among other things, the Folk Music of our(my) age. Singing about issues that concern me.....more often than not with an extremely high quality of musicianship involved.

As a bonus, the entire genre seems to support 'their own' and others. Quite unlike other genres where artists slag other practitioners of the same music style.

Dwight Yokum (My wifes favourite artist though she also claims to hate Country music) talks about it with love.

There's only two kinds of music. Good music and the other kind.
Duke Ellington.
For my money, bad music is just music that fails within it's own parameters.

"Good country" rules! Like any genre there's good and bad.

Many believe country is pretty simple stuff, but it is quite challenging to play it "right", especially the simple stuff!

Country is what I listen to and enjoy the most.

Havent figured out the quotes thing but refering to Northcountry and laying my platter out , I think the reasons why you may think Rap sucks are the reasons why some of it is brilliant , it challenges the establishment ,its provocative, it winds people up , its powerful , its sinister ,just like rock and roll did , just like punk did to the middle aged white folks driving their 4 x 4 listening to pop , rock and country music ,

Uh, no...
None of those are reasons why I don't like rap.
I find it offensive and annoying. I don't think I've ever heard any that even remotely resembled something brilliant. Just as I found a lot of 60's rock offensive and annoying.

Just because "middle-aged white folks" don't like something doesn't mean it's good.

If you enjoy listening to it, hey, that's great. Not everyone has to like it.

Music is like food. A lot of it is really good. Some of it is really bad. It has a lot to do with how it's prepared and how it's served. There's a reason the menu has more than one entree choice.

Milton Keynes! Do you live in MK Andrea? The family and I lived in Springfield right down by the canal for 5 years!!!. Just saw Jeremy Clarskon had his run in with the yobs at Xscape! Trying to explain the difference that is MK to Americans is quite hard :-)

Actually there is quite a lot of rap I like, and My missus loves dancing to Drum and Bass driven dance music whenever we go on holiday. Should have seen her at El Squid Row in Cabo last year!!!

The poetry is quite striking and can be extremely beautiful. That said yet again there is a lot drivel produced and the imagery used can be quite disturbing to a WASP caucasian audience.

Anybody on this board who hates Hank Williams, Buck Owens, Johnny Cash or Gram Parsons is mentally ill.
Anybody on this board who figures they can take take Chet Atkins, Glen Campbell, James Burton, Clarence White, Steuart Smith, Brad Paisley and a thousand others in the guitar picking stakes is actually certifiable.
And if you know anybody who can sing better than Wynonna Judd, Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris and particularly Patsy Cline and Linda Ronstadt, you are a very lucky person.
Without mentioning Dolly.
Country Music is not Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.

i like country music. especially listening to it in work around the time of dinner break and when it's hot and sunny and i'm going to a mountains.
There is a lot of crap being played, a lot of copies, imitations, copies of imitations etc. but there are guys who really can play and sing and make good, simple (or not so simple) compositions, like willy Nelson, Kenny Rogers and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Not all of their songs are good or very good, but i can always choose 2-3 songs from one album that i like to listen and add it to my playlist.

And if it comes to music, i listen to nearly all genres, because good music isn't limited to few genres.
I like progressive rock, ethnic - ancient music, classical, heavy metal, folk, rock etc. and even there is a bunch of death metal, rap, trance songs that i like to listen.

Well it is nice to be able to post our thoughts. but Andrea I see I have hit a nerve, I'll just let it go. If you want to start a thread about Rap.... feel free I guess. I have no interest in it really. The posts I have made about it are the most I have ever written on the subject and it was to much.

This is concerning country music, and I should not have tried to be funny and say it sucks. It does not. I just do not care for the real "Country Music" I am more of a country rock kinda guy when I do listen.
I caught Keith Urban doing a tribute to James Taylor the other night..........IMHO he kicked proverbial ASS and played Walking down a Country Road it was better than I think I have ever heard it played. Now for me Keith has a lot of Rock & Roll in his Country and this I can get through just fine. Love his lead style, wish I had one as good!
Can't make it through a lot of Randy Travis's songs but I think his voice is one of the most amazing human voices I have ever heard!
Roy Clark is one of my top 10 favorite guitarists but I can't make it through a whole set.
Put me in a theater of classic & prog rock musicians and I will listen till my ears bleed!

Schroeder: we agree on 95% (I like Tim McGraw)... ;)

Country is what it is...some of the best mucians on the planet performing some of the best and worst songs written by some of the best and worst songwriters in the business (Music business), being led by the nose by some of the tiredest agents, managers, PR divisions of some of the best and worst music labels in the business (Music again) which end up giving the business (not Music) to the masses...US! I lived, breathed, worked, and shelped around Nashville for a good part of the early 90's...I met some of the greatest and some of the worst! And remember: like so many other artists and "stars", Vince Gill was lead guitarist and Vocalist for Pure Prarie League in the late 70's and early 80's: check out the song "I'm Almost Ready"...great stuff...
I didn't vote...but I think Ya'll understand how I would...

To each their own: whatever floats yer boat!

Now, can we get back to the Christmas season...now there's a topic...sure to be a great debate...with most of it deleated I'm sure....

"And I heard him exclaim as he rode out of sight, "Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night."

GWB, do you actually ever play guitar?

I have slowly moved from really disliking country music to absolutely loving bluegrass--banjos and all (Jack would be so proud of me!) The band I play in does a variety of stuff, from gospel to old-time country music (like the Carter Family) to Bill Monroe to Flatt and Scruggs to Emmylou--and lots of fiddle tunes to set your toes tapping (we play square dances.) I don't mind "modern" country stuff; I'm just too busy between my worship-leading responsibilities and what the band does to listen to (or learn) much of anything else....

I voted "Take It or Leave It.

I grew up with the Old Country, Johnny Cash, Don Gibson, Jim Reeves, Hank Williams, etc. I like some of the newer stuff, Steve Warnier,Vince Gill, Paul Overstreet, Randy Travis, Alan Jackson.etc.

Glen Campbell is in the country Hall of Fame so a lot of what was once considered Pop is now classed Country. Don't listen to much country Radio. The play lists are boring. Corny as it was I liked Hee Haw. :D

Let me preface by saying I like most kinds of music... Bach Rocks! Beethoven Rules!

My Mom called me to ask what kind of Guitar someone was playing on the CMA award show a while back...
So I watched a bit of the show looking for that guitar.
Back in the "Old Days", None of what I heard would have been considered "Country"
That would have all been classified with the Outlaws, Blackfoot and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
I think that the Corporate Music people would be calling those three bands Country now. So they would not be played on the "Rock" radio stations.

I have No Idea where they would classify Cat Stevens, Jim Croce or Harry Chapin now... Or Janis Joplin, Moody Blues, Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd, or any of them if they were just starting-out now. None of them would get signed nowadays, probably.

Just thinking out loud.

Not sure, I believe she said "the blond-colored guitar with a sound-hole on the side"...

So now that you mentioned it, and I did a quick search, I'm guessing that is what it was.

I had to give the "I don't know" answer, but that was it.

gwb,
You're listening to the wrong people, check out shroeder's list for a start. I agree, some country is sacharine overprocessed pop, but there's a vast gold mine of good stuff that you don't want to miss. Don't turn your ears off.

GWB, Hey no offence intended: just my offbeat try at humor: your posts and threads have certainly been a favorite and rightly so...I meant nothing by my question...
You know on the other side of the coin, there is a lot of Rock that is certainly less than stellar as well...my favorite genre is blues...but as I said whatever makes one happy: that’s the wonderful thing about music! Hang in there! :D

MusicMike I did not take it like that , I just really believe that if people would be a bit more forward that it would save all of us alot more time trying to figure people & life out. That is why I post all of these questions that enter my noggin on this post?I do think it wakes a lot of people up to state things that they wouldnt do if it was said to their face. This is my therapy board so please keep this it going.
Mike grab your guitar of choice and play a song , you did not offend me in any way, shape or matter. GWB

I'm guessing we all have our own definition of "Country Music".

Most of what I see and hear on supposed Country Music stations or channels... well in the words of Billy Joel.. "is just Rock'n Roll to me!!"

I never considered Glenn Campbell country, nor did I ever think Chuck Berry was country.. and when did that happen anyway?? How is Hank Jr country and yet Georgia Satellites rock?? For that matter why was Lynrd Skynrd ever considered Rock? Musta been the same people that dubbed Tull "Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance" band of the year.

Never understood the labels. I've tried and tried and it just boils down to I like to listen to some tunes and don't really like to listen to others.

Look at what was going on in country when they came along. No, they would not have fit in there nor would they have sold. All these labels we have to categorize pop music are not to differentiate musical genres but target demographics; they are marketing tools. I reserve the right to like what I like regardless of where it sits in someone else's list structure.

Screw the genre.

A good song is a good song and crap is crap.
If you condemn a song due to genre, you are ultimately missing out on some good music.

Agreed. Saying that all country&western music is crap would be like saying that all taylor guitars suck. Unless you have heard every single country&western song ever recorded, or unless you have played every single taylor guitar ever built, you can not authoritatively back up your claims.

I agree that you can't say that it ALL "sucks", but I could just never get "into" it, even theough my parents used t'listen to it around the house when I was growing up . . .

While I'll admit there is good technical "playing" (on SOME of it, anyway), I just can get "into" the songs.
As of late, everything is just so "formulaic". Songs are either about the dayid Mama or Daddy, Jeezus, or 'MUHRica . . and quite often cobbled together immediately after the CurrentEvent du jour.
Reminds me of the character that WillieNelson played in "WagTheDog".

That, and that whiny, in-bred, twangy, nasally, waitress who's JUST been beaten by a truckdriver voice (or the truckdriver's voice) that just (to me) harkens to a leaf rake being dragged across about twenty running feet of chaulkboard).

Don't EVEN get me started on those stupid f@ckin' HATS . . .

Old country is meat and bone, sung — at least in part — by people who lived what they sang about. New country is jello sung by people, most of whom have no stronger ties to the genre than cowboy boots and big hats. There are some talented musicians there, but IMHO, slim pickins for quality music. And each new song seems dumber than the cookie cutter one before. There are exceptions of course. Garth, Toby, Martina and Alan are included in that group, but even some of theirs are pretty lame. But they'll never be Johnny, Merle, Willie or Waylon.
And rap is not music to begin with, so of course ANY country is better than that.

culture lesson:

in hawaii the cowboys, called "paniolo", are an odd lot. they wear levi or wrangler jeans, boots, hats, plaid long-sleeve shirts and big belt buckles. imagine that!

"country" singers here wear the same get-up but sans the big belt buckle cuz it gouges the back of the guitars and ukuleles.

puka shells were "in" in hawaii in the 70's and early 80's until the island's supply got exhausted. the ones on the market now are usually from the phillipines and drilled, not natural pukas. "puka" means hole. tourists are about the only folks wearing them now.

we do not wear "flip-flops" in hawaii. we wear "slippahs".

aloha shirts are usually worn by locals for particular occasions like church, weddings, funerals, parties, ovation fan club shindigs, etc. the T shirt is the typical attire for daily wear.

the first "cowboys" in hawaii were those spanish-speaking vaqueros who came over from mexico and southern california about 1840 to help herd the cattle that had taken over the big island. they taught locals how to ride horse and herd cattle. they brought the first guitars and braguinhas (portuguese 4 stringed, small guitars) to the islands. hawaiians adapted the instruments so we now have slack key guitar and ukuleles.

no traditional hawaiian percussion instruments for typical guitar/ukulele ensembles. there are several traditional gourd, log, bamboo and rock percussive instruments for hula though.

and yes, "credit card swiper"s are prevalent here.
good one, clifford!
