Location: Munich, Germany | Yesterday I strung the 1581 with D'addario J40's -
and I am stunned! What a sound! I couldn't put the guitar away, I was absolutely struck at this warm, smooth sound of those strings.
Now I looked for other brands online - I recall somebody saying that Thomastik had some of the best silk and steels - but don't know what to order.
So, any advice would be helpful.

Location: South of most, North of few | GHS makes some nice ones that I had on several guitars. I gave Zilla a set cause he liked them so much. |

Location: Tuscany, Italy | I heard good things about Thomastik but never tried. I guess also Martin 130 Folk guitar S&S should be nice.
But tell me, such a light string set can grant the volume needed on a Adamas ?.....
Or you go for a fingestyle only. Thanks.

- Rotosound CL 5
- GHS SaS 350
- Martin M1400 Marquis Silk and Steel
in the basket. Still don't find Thomastik Silks. Maybe someone knows what they are called?
Riccardo, I mostly play fingerstyle, hardly use a pic.
Yes, you are right, they are not as loud as normal steel strings, but perfect for the textured top.
And I disagree, the textured top doesn't need that heavy strings to sound good.
Til yesterday the 1581 was strung Nashville style, and i picked it out of my guitars because I am sure a wood topped guitar would have sounded thinner and not that loud with this kind of configuration.
Still taking advices, the basket has not yet reached the amount for free shipping.

I've just ordered from String-it-up some never-tested sets of strings as Black diamond silverplated and DR zebra acoustic/electric and a nice (and costly) Cleartone Pho/Bronze.
It should be here soon. I'II keep you posted.

Location: Munich, Germany | Okay, after a lot of search through the vault, I did not found anyone mentioning Thomastik silk and steels...
Until Schroeder tells something different, I guess he uses Thomastik Plectrum AC strings. The manufacturer's webpage says, they have a steel coil and an a silk lining added.
I added them to my basket. Keep the advices coming, I still don't get free delivery...

Location: Capital District, NY, USA Minor Outlying Islands | D'addario makes silk and steel strings as well as "Gypsy" strings. Never tried the gypsy stings, and found the silk and steel too wimpy.
Has anyone here used the Gypsy strings on an ovation or adamas?
I presume that they were designed for those Django guitars. The D'Darrio website lists them as having the same string force (lbs) as a set of custom lights. So I don't see even having to change the truss rod. According to the website Gypsy strings are more "mellow" What does that mean? |
