Very clever to take the carboard box of a drum set. Must be very percussive...

Can I get one with a set neck instead of the screw-on? Does it come with cardboard-fiber case?

I like the headstock! Very progressive. Jurys still out on the wood nut, though.

Edit: Are those flat wound strings?

Randy, things are not always as they seam :) . That is the new fold open top, designed so you can change the bracings more easily and thus you can voice the instrument to your own specific tastes. Very innovative! The wave of the future and thanks to Jim, we get to see it here first!

Colt, nice positive spin! You are in charge of customer relations as of now. We will have to change your name tho... How about, lets see,....John Keller? Now, about your pay... how about .01% of the profits after the initial tooling is paid for?

It would be pretty cool if it was really your kid's school project, but I suspect, like many kid's school projects, Dad did most of it while kid played video games.
Can't wait to see the paint job. The paint cans in the background look like they're ready. Be careful with that lacquer thinner.

Actually he did help a little on this one, but you're right, while I was doing most of the assembly, he was out playing football with the neighborhood kids.
I think I'm going to leave it in the "4" finish. Natural, to show the beauty of the cardboard grain.

Jim,

Make them in Tennessee and call them the "Tennesse Flattop Box".

If you continue to market them as made in Florida it only a "Florida FlatTuned Box".

I take one in a textured flat black please. :D

At least he was outside playing a sport instead of inside playing a video game. Give him some of the lacquer thinner and take it to school and set fire to it. He can say it's a Hendrix model.

I think it's pretty cool. Nice to see that young people actually do learn something not based on computers or global politics. IMO it is projects like this which may form the base for the highest in workmanship. Especially if the ... product ... will be tested and if necessarily corrected. It does look like the saddle could need some trimming.

Kudos. I am pleased to see that there is still hope and a future for humanity. Well at least in the branch of lutherie.

Thanks tpa, I actually have one of those mini Strats in the closet for him for Christmas. I know he's going to like that, and maybe get him interested in acoustics too. I just figured an electric with a narrow neck and light strings would be easier for him to learn on. Also, through an amp like my small Marshall, it makes a lot of noise for very little effort. (maybe too much noise)

12 gauge wire would be better. The Trader doesn't like heavy strings. He could color code the wire nuts as tuning knobs to match D'Addario's color coded ball ends on the strings. :D

The one I first began playing on wasn't a whole lot better than this one; in fact, aside from the fact that mine had two more strings, this one might even be an improvement! I look forward to when the first model with the epaulets debuts. At least it won't be necessary to do an LX version; the body already looks to be radically light-weight. Congrats, Jim and Co.
