Here we are, a week after ZillaFest & the buzz has yet to wear off. Mrs. g8r had such a blast (needless to say so did I) that she wants to host another OFC jam soon.

So, here's a proposal. If there's interest, we're thinking of a jam at the g8r.house on the MLK holiday weekend next January (that's Jan 19-21 '08). If ya'll think that's too soon after ZillaFest, or too soon before Amelia, for all that travel, just let us know and we'll find another date later in the year.

Accommodations are more Holiday Inn than Ritz-Carlton like the Zilla Estate, but really, guitar playing and camaraderie is all that matters, right? We can house a few here, too. Let me know if you're interested, or give suggestions for another date. We're open anytime.

What time can we expect you? (Better than Thursday; I never could get the hang of Thursdays).

Seriously, for OFC members the door's always open and the guitars are always in tune. And the beer's always cold, or we could warm up a few for the Brits. :D

Dear Mr. Boy, I have tenatively scheduled your Limo for that weekend. I will contact Mr. Captain, of course. An 8 hour drive will seem like nothing with you fine customers?!

I however have to wonder if the G8R's have the proper sound proofing in their abode?

Please submit the appropriate deposit for said services to the previously known address.

Respectfully,

ONE MONTH BUMP.

Here\'s a link to a pdf with a few more songs to add to the Southern Style Songbook.

So far, we've got "pretty sure" commitments from DesignZilla, BegginJim, Captain_Lovehandles, TRBoy, Trader Jim, Gway, and Beal. Anyone else? Jeff in Central FL? Amazingly Detached? You guys are (relatively) close by. Guaranteed great time!

Maybe TR will bring his mandolin instead.

Beggin, TR, are we up for another road trip? Total 4 hours less driving this time.

BluesSailor, how about meeting up to make it a foursome?

g8r, just gimme a piece of floor and I'm good. If you've got a detached garage, that would be good for sleeping Jim.

We have 2 spare bedrooms and 2 large couches (+ floor space), so plenty of sleeping space. I'm thinking we could put Jim (the Beggin' variety) up at my mom's house about 3 miles away - think that'll be far enough? ;)

Or make her completely deaf.

Actually, she's in a nursing home. We have a caretaker in her house so she can keep the homestead exemption and not have the nursing home claim the house. FL let's you do that (not count homestead as an asset for certain purposes) which is why OJ hi-tailed it here and sunk all his money into a mansion.

Don't forget, Beggin threw down the gauntlet - he and I have a snoring duel on tap! Just think of the resonant frequencies that'll hit all those guitars! :D ;)

Howdy y'all.
I was sittin' out on the veranda for a spell, sippin' on a mint julip, ponderin' that there "Southern Songbook" you fellers got a-goin' down there. Now I know you might be thinkin' me one them there "Yankees" but you can see by my manner speakin' of that that is as far from the truth as Petticoat Juction is from Hooterville.
I guess what I'm takin' a lot of aw-shuckin' to get to is that, well, I've been feelin' lower than a snakes belly in a wagon wheel rut lately and one of them there song books might just be the thing to get me right again.
Ifin it's no trouble.

The Southern Style book still resides at Southern Style Songbook PDF . Get 'em while they're hot!

This is the original book from last June. Let me add that added pages are not added, so they're not really added pages, are they?

Should know after Christmas wether I will be able to make it. Your Mom's house sounds like a good idea, but we have a showdown scheduled for sometime late one evening. All attendees will be allowed to judge the contest. They surely will not be able to sleep.

What two 12 strings would that be, Jim? I swear, I think that you trade so many guitars that you get confused as to their whereabouts.
Oh, I know what you are saying. Talkin about my 1685 and TRboy's SS #### 12's, OK gottcha. Saying that they are "my two 12 stringers" is pushin it a bit though.

Safe journey, I'll have a cold'n in tha fridge for ya, and one for Bonnie too!

Got a call from TJ a while ago, begging me to wait until 2:30 to eat lunch. I told him to jump in a lake. Some people can't understand that we high powered executives are used to getting what we want, when we want it. Anyway, lunch didn't happen.

Food question - how spicy do people like their food? SWMBO is Indian, so our heat tolerance is quite a bit more than most folks'.

Also, any food dislikes, allergies, etc.? Prepare to be stuffed - SWMBO loves to cook.

Oh yeah, SWMBO, even tho' Indian, likes beef in any form, so that's not out of the question.

Well.... it all depends on work scheduling. I have to make a trip to Miami sometime in the next two weeks. If I can somehow coerce all parties involved into setting the meeting for the 17th or 18th than it's possible. Otherwise, it's a no-go.

Cap'n - the Mando would probably be the only thing I could fit anyway. It would be good to hear what it should sound like anyway.

All right, so we have:

Definite - DesignZilla, Jeff from Central Florida, Trader Jim, BegginJim, Captain_Lovehandles and TRBoy.

Possibles - Gway, Crimson Lake and Mauvais Beal

Anybody else? I know there's a couple more Floridians here, how 'bout a short drive up for a day (or 2 or 3) of good music, great food, lotsa fun, and much drooling over some seriously nice guitars?

Looking forward to it!

Directions sent by PM/email to all definites. What guitars are y'all bringing? Please bring guitar stands, too, for the obligatory "family" portrait. I have 1 extra guitar stand and 1 music stand (to hold the songbook), so if you have music stands those might be helpful, too. Bring healthy appetites as well!

Just making sure you folks saw this, if you're coming in late.

My Southern Style songbook is overstuffed. I'll be taking out the uke stuff that I had in the back, and some songs that we never did or will do to make room. I need to file in some of the sheets that Dzilla gave us, and these new ones, plus Fogelberg... So the Table of Contents is shot.

Cap'n - do we want to just print/copy a new songbook & TOC? I can do that, if you send me your Fogelberg sheets. I don't remember which sheets DZ gave us & which ones TRBoy brought down (I think the latter are the ones without chords since he's the master transposer :p ).

Given the proximity to Jax (home of the real erstwhile Gator Bowl) and the college football madness of this town, I'd have to vote for GatorBowl '08.

Okay, here's a stab at Fogelberg tabs. I had to spend some time fixing problems, and writing some from memory, but it should get us going at least.

On Old TN, I found it tabbed in C, but I remember the songbook had it in D, and sure enough, the recording is in D. I did a simple 4 chord version. I think that in first time group jam settings, no-brainer chords are a plus.

We can fix some of these up during the weekend. Zilla, see how "Face" fits with what you figured out.

Fogleberg Songs for g8rbowl

As the Raven Flies
Same Old Lang Syne
The Last Nail
Old Tennessee
There's A Place In The World For A Gambler

I couldn't find Changing Horses anywhere, and don't remember it. Sorry.

Man, now there are tons of songs that some have and some don't. I just put all mine in alphabetical order, then when somebody suggested one, I turned right to it. Try that. The original book was in alpha order. Besides, I'm taking out some that we never ever played anyway.

But I think I will make a list of what's in my book now. It should be pretty much what you have too.

Yes.. it was an intricate ballet trying to "coerce" my work schedule into fitting my social schedule! If only it worked out this way all the time. I'm still trying to wrangle something for the Amelia trip.

I was in Denver (well... near the airport anyway) yesterday and would have loved to have met some of the people out there. Unfortunately it was an in and out trip.

You're all very welcome. We feel honored and humbled that so many responded so enthusiastically. Now we just gotta make sure everybody has a good time so we can do it again.

Earplugs will be issued at the door to everybody staying with us - you don't want to damage your hearing listening to me and Jimbo duke (ahem, snort) it out with our competition.

Don't have the book here with me at work, but I seem to remember we did this one at ZillaFest. We'll add it to the book if not. Any preferred key?

When we did our last duo-gig a couple weeks ago, we were doing that song, and I kept singing ". . have you ever seen Lorraine? . ."

Jeanette was laughing her ass off.

Captain, thanks for the list. I'll put together the new books for everybody tomorrow. Gentle reminder - if anybody has music stands, they'd be a big help.

This is gonna be the longest week (for me) since my wife went past her due date for the birth of our son. Really looking forward to it.

". . Got your "wind" tune? . ."

Was working on it this weekend.

I'll send you a CD (or e-mail an mp3) when it's done.
I'm hearing a "slide part" in it.
(that is, if yer not opposed t'doing it, and it's "allowed" . . .)

Since I fly alot, I've tried a few different sets of headphones... normal over the ear and ear buds, noise cancelling (these create a "noise" of their own) and finally settled on Shure ear buds. When I'm flying and these are on, I can't hear anything but the music.

The 3 amigos (Beggin, TRBoy & Captain) are due in around 9-9:30 Fri night. Festivities commence as soon as they can get the guitars out of the cases. Well, I guess we gotta tune 'em, too. What time are you thinking of getting here?

The earlier the better, as ar as I'm concerned. I expect after jamming into the wee hours of Saturday morning that Crimson Lake, BegginJim, TRBoy, the Captain and I will be fed and ready to play by the time Trader & Gway get here ~10. I imagine "Zilla and Jeff will be here around then, if not earlier, but I haven't heard their latest plans.

A question, is anyone interested in seeing the 97 parlor? I don't know if I am bringing it, unless you guys want to fondle it. Other than that, the FD and the 1681 are ready to travel.

No set end time. Those that aren't staying over with us will leave as they need; I'm sure the rest of us will still be at least noodling on guitars until Trader falls asleep.

Reminder - fugly Hawaiian shirts are required attire ;) .

TJ, If you have room I'd like to play the 97 parlor!....Is it a wide neck? (think I've asked you that before but don't remember...)

Hi shirts it is. I'm in NC now and it's real cold, like down in the teens and this white spoo is floating in the air. Be back in Fla today, be nice to be back warm again.
I'll see if the proto of the parlor is playable, it's a wide neck.

BegginJimBob, I'll probably sing some opera tunes on the way down for your enjoyment!....Like.....
One of George Bizet operas " Carmen " or maybe a few pieces from Mozart's operas "Don Giovanni", "Cosi Fan Tutte" or "Le Nozze Di Figaro" (I'm sure you'll recognize that tune! ;) )....That is if I can get Jas to do the alto parts!.....If not, I'll probably just do some aria's of Merle Haggard or Willie...... :D

It seems like he's in Am, but Patty Loveless in in Gm and Brad Paisley was in D.
They all use different chords just to make it fun.

Beal,
I do Harlen in Am.....I just sounded out the chords by ear. I didn't know what key Patty or Darrell used. (never hear Brad Paisley's version)

I first heard Patty do the song and loved the tune so much that I bought her "Mountain Soul" CD (GREAT CD btw...that woman can sing!!)then one day I heard Darrell Scott's version and come to find out that he wrote it....KEWL!!!

I'll bring the song sheet with (my) cords to Fla-A-Duh!

Yes, that's true. But sooner or later there are space limitations.

To have to worry about running out of room for the guitars would be nice.

FWIW, I'm thinking about you guys today and what a great time I'm sure I'm missing. I wish I could've been there. I'd been looking forward to it ever since Serge mentioned it to me back in early December, but my achy, breaky back just wouldn't let me make the trip. Hope you guys are having a blast. Hopefully, by the time the next Florida jam rolls around (you KNOW you guys are gonna do this again), I'll be healthy enough to join you. In the meantime... Rock on!

Hey all. Got back from the fest a little while ago. First and foremost - I want to thank Gator, Mrs. Gator and the little Gator for opening up their house to this crazy group. I felt like I was visiting old friends... which I guess I was! Sergio - you and the Mrs. are very warm and gracious hosts... thank you!

My fingers are close to bleeding, we played so much. It was great to see some old friends - Jas, Beggin and TR - and to meet some new ones - Gator, TraderJim, Gway and Designzilla - and I'm very disappointed that I missed Beal and Jeff.

Last night I learned some cool techniques from TR, which I promptly forgot today. Mrs. Gator is a great cook!

Of course got to play some great guitars - 1537, Custom Legend, Tak EF360, UTE, Adamas II, another 47RI. Got to hear what my mandolin should sound like - thanks TR! Learned the backstories to a couple of country songs - thanks TR again.. I think. Thanks to Beggin for the non-slip pick.

While I'm typing, they're still there plugging away and most definitely having a great time. I hope Beal came.

The bad news is, I had to leave early - the good news is, I'll see almost everyone in Amelia.

Thanks again guys and gals - it was great seeing you all!

Nice.
Great group picture.
And I'm glad to see that you guys aren't to proud to use books / cheat sheets /safety nets when needed.

Brad - I'm pretty sure we pilfered some of your songs :-)

Without the books it would've been just white noise.
