Seems to take a lot of groundwork to get us together. I keep stumping for the Vancouver Island Music Fest as a gathering place...'cos it's so darned much fun...but there's only one taker so far.
(the website for the fest has been down for a several weeks or I'd post a link. googling Vancouver Island Music Fest will get you there and related sites.)
Part of it may be that this seems to be where people come to get away from people..... |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I live in the most remote city of more than 100,000 people in the USA, I heard the other day. It's a big project for me to get anywhere or for anyone to come here. I get to Portland on a regular basis and made the NW gathering in August of 06, and met some of the Portland folks on other trips as well. Followup on fillhixx's idea or try to put something together in the Seattle area on a weekend and see if any of the rest of us show up.
We talked about the last one for over a year before it happened, but we had 2 of us from Idaho, the wild Canadian referred to above, Woody and Miles from Seattle and stonebobbo and his son from California, as well as many people a little closer to the Portland area. The only negative from my standpoint was that I didn't get to spend enough time trying out all those guitars and drinking beer with everyone. That was probably a positive for those who owned the beer and guitars. |

Any excuse to play OPO's!
Let me make this 98% official then.
I would like to host a Northwest OFC gathering at my house in Port Orchard, WA, on July 4/5th this year.
If you Google 98366 you can check out the area for other events, parks, hotels and such. I will host a barbeque style gathering and can accomodate one private bedroom with bath and room for a dozen sleeping bags on the floor!
Contact me to assist with your itinerary and lodging - there are a lot of Family friendly things to do in a short radius and if you lodge or camp nearby we can have an extended OFC event and explore the NW. |

I was actually planning it already, I just was awaiting until after NAMM to make the announcement.
So far is looks like the 4th weekend is good for many reasons. As I firm up plans I will post more, probably in a new thread, but... for those that do not know..
There is a TON of stuff to do in this area besides play guitars. The 4th celebration here is like none I have seen anywhere else either.
I'm right off I-5, and close enough that folks up and down the coast could take the train here for an adventure.
Plenty of parking, plenty of lodging, plenty of space, and logistically more music gear than we will ever need and plenty of things for the guitar widows to do too.
more to come... |

Speaking of NAMM.... anyone got an extra pass? I was hoping to go this year, but my "in" fell through.
There's another event I want to go to if I can make it. I met most of these folks while researching who was the best person to fix my Mosrite.
I'll start a new post for it |

Beer for country & folk music
Scotch for jazz
Gin & Juice for rap
Wine for.....classical? |

Some other features of the area, all within range are everything from Mount Baker, Vancouver Zoo, the town of Anacortes (very cool place), Deception Pass, LOTS AND LOTS of fresh fruits and veggie places, flowers, wineries, a fun Alpaca ranch, Historic La Conner, Chuckanut Drive, state forests, parks, ... it's really so hard to describe what to do here as there is so much. None of it really "over the top" but all very very fun no matter what your interest.
Stay tuned... |

Bring a van over and load up the guitars. I'll loan them to you till I get back. The usual rental fee is new strings. Waskel threw in a new battery. About half of them are overdue for string changes, so I'm up for a rental program. Of course, if you want to get away from it all, there's always Idaho. |

Do you actually have to be able to play the guitar to attend? Usually I avoid any situation that requires real guitar playing. If there's a chord noodling and repetitive scale playing event I'm OK.

- No you don't have to play to come, but after awhile, you'll probably want to.
- Some OUT-STANDING roads for motorcycle and bicycle rides. Arguably the #1 road in the Pacific Northwest for motorcycles starts here in Mount Vernon (to Winthrop) although it may not be completely open in July. In any case, if some bikes show up, I'd be more than happy to lead a ride, or just give-ya a map. Heck, just going to the Grocery store can be gorgeous ride here.
- Home recording class... Interesting Idea. The Studio itself probably won't be ready by then, but then again, most people don't have a "studio" in their home, so I can just use my laptop and can even project it on the big-screen in the living room. GOOD IDEA. That would be fun. |

I was thinking my daughter could take up my OFC to play, but I just remembered that Miles has one. I am sure it will be in great demand, but maybe I'll send something else when we get an idea of what everyone else is bringing. Two OFCs in one place wouldn't be a bad idea. I could tell slight differences between mine and Tony's, but that might have been because I lowered the action. |

Possible Itinerary:
Party/Trash Mile's house
Kayak the Orca's Islands (several tours available)
Wander the Farmer Markets in the Skagit Valley
Skagit Valley Wineries...
Skagit River Eagle watching...
Hurricane Ridge - drive up for an awesome view
Lounge at my house - BBQ, firepit, trees, etc.

Upstate is big on Columbia Crest - you can get it pretty much anywhere here. Not bad at all for the under $10 category and, for that price (which is usually about $9 here in town), you really can't beat it. No question, Washington does very well in the wine dept. Upstate NY does pretty ok as well so it's nice to measure ours up against some others across the country. |

I'm into big bold reds for the most part. Another favorite of mine that's not quite as reasonable price-wise, but possibly available where you are is the Columbia Winery (not Crest) cabernet sauvignon Otis Vineyard. I've seen that stuff win several blind tastings. There's hundreds that are better, but probably hard to find there.
Man, I just deleted about 3 paragraphs on a recent wine trip. Too much for this forum and way off topic I think. I don't want to get a "vacation".
Though for me, a good bottle of Cab, goes great with my Elite LX! Perfect pairing.
Tonight it's pizza from Pagliacci's with a nice Amador County (CA region) Zin. Try the Renwood Fiddletown Zin. Fantastically paired with pizza or a pasta in red sauce. $20ish per bottle. |

"Now, when you're going down a mountain road at 150 miles an hour you gotta be very careful, especially if you're playin' a guitar. Especially if that guitar is an acoustic guitar.
Because if it's an acoustic guitar, the wind pressure is greater on the box side than on the neck side, because there's more guitar on the box side."

She could bring her Celebrity, but would rather not deal with it or any of my guitars. At the Portland gathering, Miles bought some of his more unique Ovations and still seemed to have more guitars there than anyone. Most were electrics, but I remember at least one acoustic.
It would be nice to have 3 or more of the OFC guitars in the same spot, though. |

Prof, as it gets closer we should talk about meeting up somewhere around here and riding up together. |

Yeah I wish only "some" of those boxes had guitars in them. The truth of the matter is, some of those boxes have TWO guitars in them if they are Electrics.
I will also have a good assortment of percussion things on hand as well.
I do not have an Ukulele not any 12-String Guitars. I do have a 10-String tho.. :) |

If you'd like someone to haul a guitar or two back and forth from Portland, let me know. The current plan is for my daughter to drive up on July 3 or 4 and take me from SeaTac to Mt. Vernon. Although she is somewhat hesitant to take responsibility for my OFC guitar, she is very fond of 87 Collectors and might be willing to take yours up. So far she seems to be the responsible one in the family. |

I'm having a friend make me an aluminum sling to hold a hardshell case upside-down behind the trunk, between the tail lights, with the weight carried on the hitch.
One of these days I'll just build myself a trailer.

First off, I'm not much of a guitar guy. I have a fender that I like and have been learning to play a little bit. A real little bit.
So why's this dude here? I thought you'd never ask :)
Being a friend of Miles and seeing as how he asked me to, I am offering my services as a guide for a nice motorcycle ride while you're here. I know the roads around here very well, having ridden most of them at one time or another.
So, looking forward to it folks. And I'm cheap. A couple glasses of that good wine ya'll been talking about. After the ride of course ;)
Thanks .. Ken |

Wabbit, where abouts are you? I was thinking about riding out to Fort Clatsop before heading up to Mount Vernon. Every time I'm out there, my buddies prefer to ride around the backside of St. Helens instead of hitting the Fort. This time, they won't be in tow. |

They've rebuilt the replica fort after the old one was destroyed by a fire in 2005. This one has smoke detectors...
How much of the Oregon coast have you seen?
It would be a beautiful ride, from PDX on hwy 30 to Astoria, then up the Washington coast, across the neck of the peninsula and up west of Seattle (maybe stop and slap Woody around) then take the Port Townsend ferry across the sound, then up to Anacortes and over to Mt Vernon.
Definitely more than a mornings ride, but hey, that's what vacation time is for. |

Is it reasonable to see the Fort (I know there's not all that much there) and then ride to Mount Vernon via your route in a day? I'm thinking Thursday, July 3rd if it is possible. I've been all over the roads on the Peninsula and over to Vancouver Island a few times, but I'm up for anything. PM me on the details. |

Kathie and I did that very trip in reverse as our last Goldwing ride. We went to my folk's house in Brewster, then did the North Cascade Highway (20) over to Mt. Vernon, Whidbey Island, Ferry to Port Townsend, then the coastal route before taking 84 home.
Wonderful memories. |

We have a number of routes available, and varied terrain. I have a whole day ride I do sometimes, south on Hwy9, then west over hwy2, north on Hwy97, then east on Hwy20 home. Chelan is about halfway and a good lunch stop.
If you don't want to do an all day, there's shorter trips through Darrington or up Mount Baker. A lot of possibilities... |

FWIW, when I need to go to the airport, I take the shuttle. It's so much nicer than driving and having to find a place to park and all. It's a really nice Bus too, not a glorified taxi or anything. Lots of room, very comfy. |

I'm now thinking about flying back to Boise and then jumping in the car with a couple guitars and driving up. I might even base my decision on how many guitars I can get in the Cayman. I should be able to make it in by evening on the 4th, driving or flying.
Otherwise I may take that shuttle and fly back Sunday. |

The flights back get in about 11, so if I leave by noon on Sunday, I should still beat those. I'm starting to look forward to a road trip the more I think about it. There will be plenty of guitars here I would think
At least one OFC, Book Elite, and Medallion for starters for acoustics, but that doesn't even tip the iceberg for some of the folks coming.
As far as the solid bodies... I don't have an VXT (yet), UltraGP, Storm or 12-string. All others are covered, in some cases in triplicate or more.
I'm not sure I would pass up riding that time of year. I rode to Connecticut from Maryland for one of the Factory tours. I ended up staying at the Stonge Palace an extra day because it snowed.
As far as staying longer here... some... rather MANY end up coming to the Pacific NW for a visit and NEVER leaving.

I use to carry a really expensive custom-made backpack tent that was absolutely guaranteed not to leak. And it didn't, until I spent two weeks along the Oregon and Washington coasts one summer. I get in at 10 something in the morning on the 4th. Currently, a flight from Seattle to Boise can be had for $81, but you can't book them that far out.
We discussed the guitar situation and I told her basically what Miles said. Somebody else must have a Ute, Folklore and Country Artist they could bring. If tdeej comes over with his van, he's got a 1547, Book, and a 1763 as well as other better versions of what I have. As we get closer and find out what people are bringing, I can maybe fill in a gap or two by taking some over to my daughters when we move her to Portland in June and let her or one of the Portland folks bring them up.
Or, Damon, $81 to fly to Boise right now. I'll give you free room and board for a limited time only. Offer expires without further notice. |

- You don't have to compare yourself to others.
The bar is lower than you think.
- What is humourous varies by culture, but all the
good folks laugh anyway.
- You can form pretty good friendships with people
you never meet. In some cases, it's preferable!
- You can keep throwing up long after you think you're finished.
- Owning a better guitar doesn't make you a better person.
It just feels like it. |

Sneak Peek # 1 - The Legendary Earl Scruggs with family and friends
Earl Scruggs The man who invented Bluegrass banjo!
In all the history of bluegrass music there are only two people, without whom bluegrass would not exist as it does today: one is Bill Monroe, the other is Earl Scruggs. In all the discussions of who was the most important, John Hartford said it best, "Here's the way I feel about it. Everybody's all worried about who invented the style and it's obvious that three-finger banjo pickers have been around a long time-maybe since 1840. But my feeling about it is that if it wasn't for Earl Scruggs, you wouldn't be worried about who invented it." The same can also be said about Monroe and perhaps others, as well. But few will doubt the importance of Earl Scruggs and his "fancy banjo".
Although other musicians had played in 3-finger style before him, Scruggs built on earlier styles to develop a truly new and readily identifiable style, involving: unprecedented smoothness, syncopation, and uninterrupted flow; a large vocabulary of unique and original licks or cliches; blues and jazz phrases, evident in backup and in solos such as "Foggy Mountain Special;" and an overall coherency and polish that other stylists lacked, which readily inspired imitation by newer generations of banjo pickers.
On February 10, 2008, Scruggs was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards.
Sneak Peek # 2 - The Jerry Douglas Band returns!
jerry douglas band The musician who defines modern Dobro returns to Vancouver Island Musicfest
Jerry Douglas has been described as the Jimi Hendrix and the Charlie Parker of acoustic music. The New York Times has called him "dobro's matchless contemporary master." He has been
nominated for twenty Grammy Awards, won nine, as well as several Grammy Acknowledgments, and countless specialized awards. Though he got his start in bluegrass, he has made an impact in fields ranging from rock'n'roll to jazz, from blues to Celtic, from mainstream country to contemporary classical.
Douglas' legacy is multi-faceted with him having been a member of such bands as Alison Krauss & Union Station, the Whites, J.D. Crowe & the New South, the Country Gentlemen and Strength in
Numbers. Having played on more than 1500 albums, he has defined the sounds of many diverse recordings including discs released by Garth Brooks, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Reba McEntire and the late Ray Charles to name just a few.
Sneak Peak #3 - The Sparrow Quartet
Sparrow Quartet Bela Fleck, Abigail Washburn, Ben Sollee & Casey Driessen Form this Acoustic Supergroup!
The ladies of Uncle Earl all have separate side projects that keep them hopping on their time off from being a ground-breaking old time quintet. For multi-instrumentalist Abigail
Washburn, her latest side project is called the Sparrow Quartet, and features none other than bluegrass banjo legend Bela Fleck, as well as Ben Sollee (cello) and Casey Driessen (fiddle). The Sparrow Quartet toured Tibet recently, before returning to the States to play a set at the Kent State Folk Festival.
Sparrow Quartet, a gathering of superlative musicians with adventure on their minds, leap boundaries and bust genres like there's no tomorrow as they spotlight tunes from the group's self-titled EP.
First assembled for several U.S. government-sponsored tours of China and Tibet, the quartet explores a mixture of old-time, folk, and bluegrass numbers, as well as intriguing original compositions. A further dimension is added to the music by a recurring Chinese influence: the country's traditional music is deftly incorporated into a number of old-timey "Sino-American folk" tunes, including several showstopping numbers sung in Mandarin.
Sneak Peek # 4 - The Dirk Powell Band!
dirk powell The best of 'old time' comes to Musicfest 08
We told you about this one already but with this dream lineup of acoustic masters, it bears repeating...
Dirk Powell has expanded on the deeply rooted sounds of his Appalachian heritage to become one of the preeminent traditional American musicians of his generation. In addition to acclaimed releases on Rounder Records, he's recorded and performed with artists such as Loretta Lynn, playing several instruments on her Grammy-winning release "Van Lear Rose," Sting, Jack White, Levon Helm, Jewel, T-Bone Burnett, Ralph Stanley, and Linda Ronstadt, among others. His ability to unite the essence of his culture with modern sensibilities has led to work with many of today's greatest film directors, including Anthony Minghella, Spike Lee, Ang Lee, Victor Nuñez, Steve James, and Edward Burns.
His live performances of powerful Appalachian music with The Dirk Powell Band have inspired audiences across the globe in a wide variety of venues, including such prestigious settings as the Eastman School of Music and the Interlochen Academy. Dirk selected and arranged traditional Appalachian material for Riverdance: The Show, in which he also
performed on fiddle. For the past several years, he has also enjoyed a strong collaboration with Tim O'Brien, resulting in acclaimed recordings such as "Songs From The Mountain," and performed with his Cajun group Balfa Toujours.
Sneek Peak # 5 - The 'Youth' of Acoustic Music
carrivicks From England to the Island...
The Carrivick Sisters
18-year-old twin sisters Laura and Charlotte Carrivick hail from South Devon, England.
They play a variety of bluegrass instruments (mainly guitar, mandolin, dobro and fiddle) with vocal harmonies and are both songwriters. Their musical interests have varied considerably through the years meaning that elements from a variety of genres are brought into their music.
"I am very impressed by The Carrivick Sisters, one of the best young duos I've heard. The girls sing and play as one and their work is characterised by great musicality. They are not only very talented instrumentalists and singers but they write really good songs as well." - Ralph McTell
bachand
Qristina and Quinn Bachand
This young brother and sister duo have been receiving rave reviews from audiences all the way from Vancouver Island to Cape Breton Island! Born and raised in Victoria, B.C. Qristina and Quinn Bachand come from a family with a strong musical heritage that has deep roots in France & Northern Spain.
Seventeen year old Qristina is a solid & versatile fiddler with an expressive style that is smooth & clean, yet rooted in tradition. Blessed with an acute ear and an intense sense of rhythm, 11 year old Quinn is rapidly establishing himself as a gifted guitar accompanist. Qristina & Quinn consistently deliver a spirited performance that features their enthusiasm and love of Celtic music. Their repertoire includes a wide range of Celtic music including Irish, Scottish, French, Cape Breton, Old-Time & Appalachian!
Individually, they are exceptional instrumentalists, together they bring the fiddle tunes to life!
Watch for more announcements of young performers playing at Vancouver Island Musicfest to come soon...

Location: Mount Vernon, WA | We might want to discuss what kind of ride you all want to do. I have a few suggestions, of course...
Wine tour. We have several wineries here in the valley. Small tasting and buying tour.
Chuckanut Drive. Famous locally for the views of the sound and the twisties, but tends to be crowded on the weekends. Up the west side of Lake Whatcom and back on Chuckanut via Bayview. Nice.
Winthrop for lunch. My personal favorite ride, but it's an all day thing. Over the north cascade highway. GREAT ride!!
Whidbey Island. Over deception pass and onto the island. Another personal favorite of mine.
So really, lots of options. It's totally up to you guys. I know pretty much all the roads and have a gps to find whatever I don't... |

Since I had to leave early from the one we did in Portland, I don't know how long it lasted, but I think we started early afternoon, with people showing up with more and more guitars as the afternoon went on. Don't know if or when Greg kicked everyone else out. Miles did a tentative schedule and will provide more detail after Amelia. Greg had some great ideas, like masking tape and a sharpie to identify all the guitar cases. That could have been very confusing.
I'm sure some of you that actually know how to play will be able to do some songs together. I'll just find a spot to try out all the guitars and drink beer. |

Who do we ask, to ask, about Matt? Does Beal need an invite, or does he just go wherever he wants? Who's bringing the superglue to keep Cliff sitting on the cajon....in case he shows? How many days ahead should Lanaki start paddling in order to make it in time?
These are questions that need to be answered! |

I am a bit concerned that if you don't show and Wabbit and a few others ride motorcycles, Miles may not have enough guitars to keep me occupied. I may have to learn to play something on electric guitars.
Lets shake the trees and see if we can get tdeej and some others to bring a couple van loads of accoustic guitars over. |

Reading that post the light just went off. I've always just laid down the rhythm tracks with whatever I had plugged in, then gone back and played melody...er, lead...over it with the same guitar. Dayum. Even with an Adamas and an Ovation sitting here it never occurred to me to lay down rhythm with one of those. Excuse me while I go bang my head on the wall. |

Most of mine will be covered anyway, except I can't think of anyone close who has a Ute. It's too bad, because most of them need new strings and I wanted to give Waskel something to do. |

Unless Miles has a huge supply of music stands, like he does guitars, everyone should try to bring as many as they can. Greg also had a great idea for keeping the guitar cases straight--a roll of masking tape and a sharpie. We labeled our cases, which might have seemed a bit anal for the first person there, but it was essential once we had a couple of rooms filled with either brown or black Ovation cases. |

Mark, I think I only paid about $18 for mine off Music123...can't remember if it was a regular price or a sale though. The Fender ones are pretty nice too. I have a pair of the slim electric-style ones, which actually DO fit the SSB Ovations. |

I was on bass, trying to keep up with him on some fast boogie number, just really focused. Somewhere in my hindbrain I hear "bass solo!", and everyone but Cliff stopped playing, and I mentally went "huh? What?!?".
I plinked 4 or 5 notes (none in the right key) before I remembered what I was doing and managed to get in a few licks by the end of the 12th bar... |

We just got home from an open house at Carpenter Creek here in Mount Vernon. Nice folks, great wines. There are several others. Not that I don't like the folks in Woodinville, but you can order that online anytime. The wines here in Skagit County, for the most part, you can only get here.
Ken and Sandy (who are also members here) along with Lisa will be able to point you all to the good wines, and I'm sure we will have a good assortment here at the house.
Hmmmmm, that's a topic. Matching wines to guitars. What tastes better while playing an Elite as opposed to an Adamas. Me... I'm a Vodka guy, which... goes best with a PF-22 and the amp cranked!!!! |

Four of us, the largest collection of solidbody Ovations in the world, and enough Canadian beer to kill 15 Americans?!?!?
OH, and one big-ass retired U.S. military type.
Nevermind, it's all good.....

Ironic, as Mt. Vernon would be the shortest trip to make. |

1778LX Elite
6774 Folklore
1117 Legend/Deluxe Balladeer thing
UKII
Tornado
Magnum IV
(so far all the Os)
In addition, would there be any interest in playing around with some non-O's? I don't have any of those fancy wood boxes like them East Coasters (and a certain person from the SW), but I could bring...
'83 Gibson Custom Designer Series Flying V
Carvin DC400T (Might get there before me)
A few PF inspirations (Peavey T-60s, 3 different ones)
USA Peavey Predator with Kahler and Roland synth pickup (and synth)
Washburn WD54SW
Alvarez AJ60SC 12 string
And of course, the Doubleneck Mosrite. I just heard it's about ready to be strung. Exciting news indeed!
Anyway, I'd love to meet you all, but I'd love to play your guitars even more. Whatcha bringing? :D |

Ok, I'll say it for all the NON-BIkers here.. THAT'S JUST BS!!! Even if you ride a Harley, preparation for a long trip involves checking to make sure you have gas in the tank, air in the tires, and depending on the bike and oil, checking the oil. 15 minutes?? 30 if you have to change the oil??.. BUSTED!!!!
No seriously, Jellystone and Glacier sound like a fun trip. Of course we have wild animals, camping and a glacier here too... Not to mention mountain Vista's and the Ocean, we just don't call it "parks." Here, it's just our back yards... but you have fun on your little trip :)

To each his own. When I embark on a 2000+ mile trip, I tend to give it a good going over first. Especially when my wife is going along.
I'm sure I will have fun. But if I can still make it up there over the 4th as well, I'll have even more!
...and if it's a Harley you have to factor in a run to the store for an extra case of oil... you know, for the road. |

I have to say by biggest reason for the Lightning infatuation is that it's what Hunter S Thompson was riding when he rode with the Angels.
If y'all haven't read it, it's a good read. "Hell's Angels" is one of my all time favorite books. Especially at the end of the last chapter where he describes taking the BSA out on to the coast highway and pushing it to "The Edge", and how nobody knows where "The Edge" is, except for those who went over it.

....this is NOT an internet Motorcycle Club running under a guitar banner to avoid scrutiny. I don't ride. Never have. (except for a couple months in Europe when I bought the Peugot 101 to avoid hitch-hiking in France. But that was a moped.)
There are a couple people who are motorcycle enthusiasts, but the one's I've met are NOT 1%ers.
They just seems to stand out sometimes.....

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | I recently had a vintage Triumph Trophy TR6C. It ran great, but you couldn't go anywhere without reeking of the smell of gasoline. It was about the same size and weight of the BSA Thunderbolt, but nowadays, after riding much bigger Harleys and BMWs for 20 years, the vintage 650 Triumphs and BSAs are diminutive. Unless you're into tinkering, do yourself a favor and buy something more modern, even if it has the retro look. The new vintage looking Triumphs are terrific. |

My lingering concern is that I intend to make some stops and do some sightseeing on the way out, which means leaving the guitar completely out in the open. Waterproofing notwithstanding, this sort of dampens the idea. |

That's because you're Polish. No we like them domesticated, preferably in sausage.
The movie was stupid, corny, predictable and grossly over acted. Loved it. The scene where they have to all stop and pee after a few miles reminded me of most of our Porsche tours.
Now we need to get back on track. I'm not bringing any guitars. |

The case is cracked where laid over the rack, but the guitar is still my favourite.
Probably because of those memories of playing for Swedish schoolgirls on the lawn of the Louvre, jamming with gypsies on the beach in St. Marie de la Mer, sitting in with a Pink Floyd cover-band in Dunkerque, writing love songs with Wendy from San Diego....and on and on.
We been playin' and stayin' together
through all'a the changes and all kinds'a weather.
I think that we should head back out again,
On the road my friend..
Bottom line, O's travel well.
(and scare the hell out of other guitars at the campfire!) |

Have plenty of sound support and amps for Acoustic and Electric and plenty of quiet "unplugged" space as well. But, if you have anything interesting... well that's what it's all about.

A.J. good you're coming. I'm a little concerned about the Al thing though. Miles has mellowed out just fine but these Eastern big city types, Canadian or American, don't usually take to the climate that well....they often seem to feel it necessary to teach everyone how to drive with one finger out the window and one hand on the horn.
Now, we need someone from the British contingent. Andrea? If you fire up the barge now......you'll just make it.
And Continental Europe? Hey! We're closer to the Asian members too! |

The only innacuracy in mine was that he showed me playing guitar while Mike and John were paddling. I'm a much better paddler than guitar player. |

Must be able to pass Merchant Mariner exam
Based out of Anchorage
Spend 60 consecutive days at sea at a time, working 70 hour weeks
Understand and have certifications pertaining to computing security and information (experience with DIACAP, DITSCAP, and DoD Dir 8500.00 as well as technical knowledge)
Must have an active Secret Clearance.
And that just the OVERVIEW. You should see the detailed laundry list.
Sometimes this job can be challenging. I did find a guy tho. He's interviewing this afternoon. |

OVATIONS:
First year Tornado w/trem (finally I get it this week!)
'69? 1118 GC 12er (on it's way, thanks Jim!)
First year 1117 Legend/Deluxe Balladeer
Sunburst Viper (on it's way, BAD DAMON!)
PF-22 with rails
UKII (DUH!)
6774 Folklore
1778LX
TAKAMINES:
Nashville Series NV340S
Nashville Series TF360SBG (bluegrass)
Peavey T-60 burst
Peavey Predator with Roland GR-33 synth
Gibby V
And hopefully the Mosrite depending on if I get it back in time.
If my son isn't still at harvest, I'll bring him and his 1619 Custome Legend (on the way)
Should I bring the bass? Miles has a bunch there I think.
I know I've tried this once before, but WHAT ARE YOU BRINGING? |

Maybe my Deacon, Breadwinner or, Viper, but I think those will be well represented. Possibly some electric parts for the big Ovation Parts Swap Meet they're having at the Skagit Valley Fairgrounds.

Even SWMBO was suggesting I should bring a guitar, but I can't see taking one on a plane to Charlotte the week before and then back to Seattle, especially with the new restrictions on luggage. I don't have anything that's too exotic, so the locals should be able to cover it. Anybody around there got a Ute to bring? I'd really like to play one of the OFC Koa Collectors if anyone has one of those. |

Of the solid-bodies... this is what I DON'T have.
- Deacon 6 or 12 (although I have Breadwinners)
- Preacher 6 or 12 (my Preacher has Viper pickups)
- Ultra GP
I also have no Storm series guitars.
I think everything else from the solid body world is covered, many times over. Technically I don't have an actual "Bluebird" but I have the non-Blue version and some other interesting items.
We should also be well covered for Acoustics from what I am reading. I have 3, and I see several others already listed by several people.
No worries. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I should have said nothing exotic that wasn't already covered. Miles has an OFC and a Book Elite, right? The Book is basically the same as the 87C. The 30th CL is covered if anyone brings a CL., especially an early one. Tdeej has a 1547 and 1763, which are much more rare than my 1537 and 1713. Miles has a jillion Ultra GSs. Seems like everything but the Ute is covered. I was thinking we had a member in the Seattle area that had one of those. I'm coming to play your guitars. We should be fine. |

The only difference I could tell (besides his was in better condition) was the headstock. I liked the 87 headstock better. The preamp is upgraded in the Book as well, but we never plugged them both in together.
If Waskel would bring his 87C, all would be right with the world. Now that I think about it, I think tdeej has a Book as well. He bought a new old stock one off ebay and sent it in for a refurb a couple years ago. If he brings a vanload we'll be in great shape for acoustics. |

Phil, the one that leaves Sidney that day will take about two hours to Anacortes. If you haven't been on it before, get up front. When it makes the bend past Orcas, there's a great view of Baker like on a postcard. It also passes right through the path the two Killer Whale pods take going up and down the coast, they might come up to say hello too.

That shuttle is actually a cool way to go and can really be nicer than driving depending on the time of day. I've used it often. It's very roomy and comfy.
As the time gets closer, and more folks firm up the details, we'll work it out, no worries. |

My guess for the Ultimate O that I already had was the 04 Commemerative CL. I guess I need to talk to SWMBO about Al's offer. I should have been prepared to work it into the conversation the other day when she told me I should take a guitar to the gathering. Father's Day, the first in 25 with no kids around, might be an opportune time. |

Are we gonna be able to get um.... LOUD on occasion? ;)
You good on bass amps? WHo's bringin' a drum kit? Oh shit this is getting closer quick. |

I have a couple guitar cabinets... Actually more than a couple.
I guess we can get as loud as we want, I can't imagine anyone caring.
I wasn't thinking of setting up the drums, although just for sake of sanity and reality, I may set up my TAMA midi kit or a hybrid kit with real snare, kick and symbols with the rest TAMA pads. I'll have other "percussion" stuff around as it seems to add a LOT to the jams. Tambourine, and other things that go clack and clank. |

I prefer Tully's, however, if I'm out of town, and it's a choice between "Joe Blow's Java Hut" and a Starbucks, I'll pick the Starbucks. At leat I know what I'm going to get. Same concept that's kept McD's alive and well. |

I have a few favorite "huts" that I frequent when I can. Different ones known for different "specials" like muffin or other fresh baked goods. |

(A: Just before the drought.) too funny, but typically true.
If it wasn't for those water (and power) stealin bastages down in CA, we'd never have a "drought" situation up here. |

I'm also looking for a couple or three Volunteers.
1. Someone to take the lead on a Guitar Maintenance Workshop. We all have some tips and tricks for everything from changing strings to adjusting necks.
We just need a "ring leader" to lead the conversation. MWoody ? Damon ?? I can help too of course. I have strings, and tools and a neck support, tuners, etc.. Whomever steps up, make it as formal or informal as you like. You're volunteering, so it's your show, I'll try to get you whatever you need.
2. Anyone else who wants to make a presentation/do a workshop, let me know. We have plenty of time and space. Share your skills!!! Share your Talent. Don't be shy!!
3. Song writing contest. Need someone to take the lead on this (excuse the pun). I've never done one, but from what I have heard, they can be loads of fun.
Don't forget to PRE-ORDER YOU EVENT T-SHIRT Here!!! |

I was just thinking about a 10 hour drive back on Sunday after a late Saturday night/Sunday morning. I hope my flight beats the Prof back to Boise, so he can stop for a short rest and I can refresh his coffee. Maybe he'll show my wife pictures of his music room and convince her that I need some additions to mine. |

There will be a songwriting event.
I have volunteered to coach/referee.
A little early to say what shape it will take, I'm waiting for the Tequila to inspire....it's never let me down yet.
(warning; I consider songwriting a full contact sport. My longest lasting writing partner and I kicked the snot out of each other on the beach one night working out the fight scene in a piece we wrote in university....'course, I don't bounce like I used to.)
Here's a plan.
The theme is.......
Childhood Memories
Reminiscence, learning experience, fond memories, shadowy terrors.....whatever. Bring a finished or partial song. I'll go get back my copy of Sheila Davis' workbook and we can play and/or polish as the mood and interest allows.
....now, where is Robbie's number? Bugger's ahd the book for more than a year.....
(co-writes are encouraged. they're great for both bonding and getting things done. Did I read that AJ is 'beering' with someone before he comes over? Write a song dudes!) |

Sometimes I get all excited and blurt off the top of my head, and you can't go back and edit 10 minutes later on this site.
I should ask first, is there interest in writing songs before or at this event? If before, then we all have a couple of weeks to dash something off. If at, then we can write in groups, which is sometimes a little faster and more fun...we chat a little about songwriting and how it's built. I could share some brain storming ideas. (okay, maybe more of a drizzle.)
And, in case it sounded a little over-enthusiastic...the 'full contact sport/ comment', etc......rest assured. It will be a supportive and nurturing environment. None of the sort of digs we normally do around here. |

I wouldn't mind some ideas, though. So far I'm fine with learning songs that other people have written. |

Perhaps, the asembled membership could sign it for me. Just one favor, however- I may want to wear it in public sometime, so let's not be TOO politically incorrect, or profane.
Otherwise, I will hoist a toast- perhaps, more than one- over the period of the festivities.

These beers are probably all pretty good, but I'm still working my way through the list. ....it takes longer than it would have 30 years ago..
Phillips Brewing Co. (no relation...sigh) does some fine work. Vancouver Island brewing (esp. Hermans) is quite good. In any case, what have you already had? (and remembered) |

I've only had one type of beer I didn't like, but I can't remember the name of it. First time I had it, I thought it had gone bad. Then I had the same type by a different brewer and realized I just didn't like the taste. I drank the whole bottle the second time. It's a sin to waste beer. |

Personally I don't like really cold beer. I like cool Beer. They say Europe is "room temp" that's not really true... well sorta.. it's cool, not warm, not cold. |

I don't remember the beer in Germany being as warm as the beer in England. When it comes to anything food, I would never do what they do in England.
So do you need ice and coolers? |

Like most Canadian girly things, Canadian wine doesn't so much have head as give it. |

If you had an Ovation bowl, you could attach a handle and make a nice umbrella. Maybe the handle could fold so that it would double as a kayak paddle.
If you had a lot of Ovation bowls, you could make a vehicle for the Kinetic Sculpture race in Port Townsend. Start now, you could be finished by October.

A light mist in the air adds a great deal of colour to a fireworks show. Ask any pyrotech....
And SO far, my grapes are loving this weather. Heaviest production ever. 'Course, the vineyardis just four years old.

This is not the city you're going to, it's Mt. Vernon. You can't go wrong wearing anything that says STIHL on it.
Some ideas...

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Honsetly Al, as someone who used to live on the least coast, these descriptions aren't giving you a meter to work with. We haven't seen rain in several days. Until today it hasn't been over 75 (day) or under 65 (night). Lisa works at Farmers Markets and has gotten sun-burned. Mount Vernon, is in a "rain shadow" so essentially if you see a forecast for rain in Seattle, we stay home in Mount Vernon, and plan bike rides or go on one where it's nice a cool and dry. I actually fill my pond from a hose from June until September.
Only 20 miles away in Arlington it probably rains 300 days out of the year.
I know of no one that actually uses an umbrella in the rain here, because it's not the Rain that I'm sure yuou are thinking of, we rarely see that ANYWHERE in Washington, except maybe toward where MWoody lives. Rain in the daylight, is more of a heavy misting/light rain, the stuff that wouldn't even make the weather report on the east coast. Those "light morning rains" you get in jersey... They call those DOWN POUR here. I think it's hilarious actually.
So here's what to pack...
Other than what I've normally seen you pack for Florida or NAMM, I'd ads a medium/light jacket that is water resistant and a sweatshirt.
Of course we have extra.. and plenty of stores..but really... we wear t-shirts.. if it gets a little chilly, on comes the Sweatshirt or the light Jacket or a combination.
And most imporatantly.. SOCKS WITH SANDALS!!! Oh.. whoops.. that's Portland.. :) |

-Steve W. Yeah, our anti-tourism campaign even has those in other parts of Washington convinced. Honestly, can't remember when it rained last. It might have last week one night. Rains all around us. I can see it. I think it rains in the early morning sometimes.. but I don't see that either. :) |

We have enough people from back east moving out. We stopped sending them pictures of mowing the lawn in February and the annual April 1 Tulip count in the 70's. It just makes more of them come.

They say it's "all about the journey"... well if this event is half as much fun as the preparation, it should be a good time had by all. |

There is a stellar fireworks show on the 3rd at Big Lake (right next to Mount Vernon). I will find out where non-residents can watch from. It's quite the site. The fire department runs it, and you give them a donation as you arrive.
I will post details tomorrow sometime. |

Blown shock is a bit of a pain, but at least it's a part that "feels" like your getting your money's worth when you get back on. It's those $200 little widgets I hate spending the money on. You know, those things you can't see, they look like they contain nothing, but yet the bike doesn't run without'em.
ride safe. |

Thanks to everyone for putting this on, especially Miles and Lisa for hosting and Damon for saving space in his Ovation hauler for me. The jam sessions were impressive. Someday I'll be able to follow along. |

Yes, a great chaotic time. Marred only by some drunk fool who walked through the screen door. But even that was a good thing.
1: It's not a party 'till somebody breaks something.
2: At least it was someone who feels no shame and would not hide for the rest of the weekend.
3: I'm told the door works better than ever now.
Beer was drunk, wine sipped, guitars played. All in typical West Coast fashion....I think we even caused Al to mellow for a moment.
As always, though we had lots of other things to do it always ends up being about the people. Aussie James and his gorgeous wife are warm people, generous to a fault, who now know how to drive on the other side of the road.
....Oh heck, I'm not going to do a list right now (there's actual work piled up on my desk) but we really really like us, yes we do.
Miles & Lisa; thank you for not pressing charges. Your REAL Nanaimo Bars are waiting. |

There were at least 5 women, although I didn't count and that probably would have been about as high as I could have counted the first night. No women guitar players that I recall, though. |

I'm thinking that the screen wasn't reformatted to fit my monitor though...
You did a fine job of classical Gas on the Moody.
Fil - Just consider it as additional screening they may have missed at the border.
The fact that you had just mitigated all risks by clipping a penlight to your visor and had a smug grin of technical confidence just prior to kissing the mesh was the best part for me.
But you kept the hat on!
Very British of you. |

Miles and Lisa, thanks so much for the hospitality! Great food, great venue! And thanks for having some of your local friends attend. They represented Mt. Vernon nicely and added a lot to the event!
Got to meet lots of new people, and get reacquainted with lots of folks from previous events
Best (mis)-use of an LED ballcap: fillhixx
Highest cranial/hanging-object contact ratio: Miles
Best SWMBO job title: Boob Wrangler
Best shotgun rewiring job (and it worked!): Alpep
SWMBO count: 5, I think?
Tons of great guitars. Highlights for me personally: Numbfinger's mint deacon. MrGolf's mint sunburst storm and FD14, Damon's 1537 with lots of mojo.
Thanks to Woody for the tune-up assistance. Thanks to Damon and fillhixx for the lessons. Thanks to AussieJames for the AussieWonderBasket including TimTams! And thanks to seesquare (in absentia) for the pick pocket!
For some reason, I didn't take many pics. But the ones I did take are in the Gatherings area.
Oh, and I almost forgot to mention, not only are all of these people extremely friendly, but hugely talented as well. Very inspring, all! Thanks!
Did somebody say Nintendo? |

Damon's 1537 is killer. One of the nicest ones I've seen, and they're all great. Damon had a bunch of other great guitars there as well.
Mike's on site restoration of the ebay Viper. It was actually a committee project that worked!
dvd's Redwood. I've played it in at least 2 versions and it is great.
The second time I've played an FD-14. I may be the only one that isn't blown away by that guitar, so it is good that I can move other things to the top of the list.
Mike's Koa. If I can get some bills paid this month, I'll be talking to Al in August.
Miles' Book Elite was very tempting. I just can't rationalize that.
All of Miles' exotics. Electrics are wasted on me, but I am not too old to dream of being a rock star. It was nice to play a familiar OFC.
Thanks to everyone for bring their toys for those of us who flew or biked in. My fingers were hurting on Saturday. I haven't played that much in a long time. |

I don't think we got that on tape...
The Standing Ovation 07 Tour Uke went home with Damon so you Ukester's have a new member.
More on the NES Viper later. |

I have the History of Ovation Guitar Book.
It has been signed by a whole bunch of drunks (I Wasn't the only one....there was a momentary panic when we thought AJ was going to try and drive to the hotel in the condition he was in. But he thought he WAS getting in the passenger side.) and will be going Down Under shortly. |

No, no, heck no. I got enough irons in the fire as it is.
I don't have a list of where it is or who wants it.
I am glad to know it's not lost and that it was at the NW gathering and that it is going "down under".
The debate might be as to where, after it's all dog-eared and written all over, it should make it's last stop. My thought, and it's just my thought, is that it would be nice to have it end up at the Mothership.
I was not there but I did phone in.
It was nice to say hello to Woody and Miles and VERY nice to say hi to Aussie James & Phil.
Somehow I missed talking to Boise Mark. Sorry pal. |

There was plenty of baldness to go around, but I really didn't need a hat in Seattle. The only reason I wore one was to avoid the glare from the camera flashes.
There was also plenty of evidence that the marketing people made the right decision when they came up with the contour bowls. You know who you are.
I forgot to thank our hosts for the brats. I thought I couldn't get enough of those, but after a couple of them at Miles I came home to a barbeque where the only choice was brats. Still managed to get down a couple more. I'm really working toward the need for a contour bowl. |

Incidently, Jeffrey D, the bike has 60,000 miles on it which is a bit beyond its normal life spand of about $50,000 miles. That bike you're looking at with 27,000 miles should be o.k. unless the prior owner weighed 300+ pounds. No problems carrying the guitar all skrink-wrapped thanks to Miles. As luck would have it, other than a few spinkl;es in the Cascades and as I arrived in Denver, there was no rain. I'll post a pic tomorrow.
My fondest memories...jamming with Miles, Al, _______ on bass, Mike W. and at least one other local friend of Miles. Terrific hosts, Miles and Lisa. The salmon is a keeper. Miles' collection of Ovation solid bodied prototypes and one-offs may be the best in the world.
For those who went to Ameilia, Damon can be "that guy." He can really shred it. Damon, that's a compliment!
And Damon's 1537 is one incredible guitar in both looks and tone. This opinion was nearly universal, if not totally universal. Tim, the flamer was found in perfect condition.
So what do I do after riding 1600 miles in 30 hours? SWMBO has me digging up and relocating plants! I should have taken my time! |

I was amazed by everyone's abilities. Everything from Mark's handle on Croce tunes, to Phil's uncanny ability to write a song out of thin air, to Brad's overall skills at singing and playing. I mean really, everyone had their own uniqueness and it was a pleasure to be a part of this thing.
Too many highlights and too many people to touch on everything without leaving something or someone important out, but for me, the overall highlight was the fine people, OFCers and non-OFCers alike. Ken, you're A+ in my book. So sorry I missed the Sunday trip.

Damnon bought a ton of guitars as did Woody. I even waved my hourly rate to solder a guitar together for the woody. Luckily it worked the first time he plugged it in or I would have never been able to live it down. (Can I stress Weller soldering pencil station and needle nose pliers!!!!!!!!)
Great time jamming, reminds me how much I need to hone those skills, not sure if I will ever have enough time to practice to keep up with everyone.
I did finally get some local cherries at the supermarket at a 1.99 an lb. which were really good but may have lead to an upset stomach on sunday.
Great to talk gear, hi fi, guitars, etc etc etc with everyon.
I didn't realize how friendly the people in the NW were. while I was still in bed the maid opened the door and asked if I needed "servicing" I told her I was fine for the time being but would consider it later.
plane ride from hell. delayed in O'hare for a couple of hours coming out, leaving delayed for and hour and a half which would have made me miss my connection in st. louis, got the last standby for a flight to o'hare to get a 6:45 to philly delayed to 8;45 then 10 then 10:30 then 10:35 then 10:39 got into philly at 1:30 am got my bags at 2 went to sleep at 4
still tired.

Found out I LIKE outlet malls!...and that camping supply store just up the road a block.
Damon, too kind. 'That song' isn't finished yet...actually....I think it's two songs. Maybe Miles & I can putter at it this weekend before the morning stages start up, which is just after coffee.
Al, feel the love. It's what we do out here ;)

After applying liberal amounts of mosquito repellant on your hands and forearms, be careful when handling highly glossy guitars, particularly those with flames on all sides! With the heat that guitar endured on the back of the bike in the hot sun all the way home, the filmy repellent smeared on the guitar coagulated into some really sticky mess. It came off with Dunlop, but yuk! Incidently, did anybody discover the piece of salmon that disappeared within the body of an unidentified guitar after falling off a passer-by's plate? Fortunately, it didn't fall in mine! Electric guitar owners need not worry. |

Miles and I have Matrixes. His is actually one of the first, a Medallion. Those are also guitars with very little wood in them, but they sound great. |

Perhaps, Dr. John was right........ |

Well. Maybe Damon. |

Just a quick one
My apologies for being AWOL.
I have been travelling and this is the first chance I've had to get near a PC that was working since the Jam.
We had a fantastic time.
Thanks to all for the fun and fellowship
Post more soon

Location: Tennessee | Man, I wish I could've made it back up to the NW event this year. Max and I were just talking about the great time we had in Portland last year and how we hope to get back for the next one. The timing just didn't work for us this year. Nice to see all the familiar faces and characters, but also nice to see the unfamiliar faces too. Damon, it's either a round-hole one or one with a bunch of those little holes. AJ ... so close yet so far away. Hope to meet up with you next time. |

Setting tents at the campsite tomorrow night. (so we're just far enough and just close enough to the mainstage area)
Look forward to seeing dvd and family (it's a very family friendly environment) there next year. ;-) |

Anyone know a good voice coach out here in the NW? |

Location: Jet City | Thanks guys, you all were the first group I've ever sang in front of. Just playing is a different story, but the singing is new to me.
I didn't want to be like one of those Idol idiots "well my mom says I can sing"
I need to diversify the set list some, then I think I'll be ready to jump in head first. I'll call upon y'all again for some advise before I do it, but I was thinking an open mic or so would be the way to start it out. |

Prolly have to drag me out of a winery or two as well. |

You can start out with just two or three songs you feel confident with. (Practice playing with the radio turned on to music you really like listening to while you 'sell' the song to an audience of pictures along one wall.)
Always have one more song in reserve 'just in case.'

They also sell bottles, just like home...
I wonder if we could get a bulk rate on the trip with a party of 6-15? Any travel agents in this group? |

Location: Campbell River, British Columbia | BTW: Musicfest update.
We all checked out Sunday night. The drunken teens left many of us sleep deprived. I think this festival may be going the way of Merrit Mountain Music Fest...I am reminded of the Casey Stengle-ism, "No one goes there any more, it's too crowded."
The music is still good. Everything that happens when the sun is up is perfectly fine. But unless things change a lot, I don't think I can say it's exactly 'family friendly' after the music shuts down. |

First things first though. Learn something other that Young or Matthews...
Hey Mark, weren't you gonna send me some Croce stuff?
I heard this Matchbox20 song I thought might be OK to do too...

I drink the blood of a newborn on every full moon. It's just a youthful appearance. In 9 more years I'll be 50. Ouch! ;)
I think dvd was the "baby" of the group. |

You're probably right about dvd, but he's aging rapidly since he had twins.
I thought AJ would be the old man of the group, since he talked about retirement and grandkids, but I was bummed that he and I are the same age. At least when people call me Grandpa they aren't correct. |

I think the first picture of me on this board was one Dave took. I was sitting down playing one of his guitars, but I could hardly see anything in the picture for the glare off my forehead. I vowed to wear hats from then on when I was in a picture, but the Captain did that great charicature of us for the first NW Gathering. Most of the shirt was forehead.
When you take pictures of old guys with guitars, you see guts, bald heads and guitars. Other people look at llamas. |

I think Andrew (edensharvest) is younger than me by a longshot, but indeed, at 38, I was the youngest at the party. That's okay, people say I'm an old soul, so I fit right in with you geezers. ;) |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I didn't have kids till I was thirty and I thought that was barely on the edge of having enough energy. If it doesn't wear you down, it will keep you young. My brother in Portland had twins when he was 45 and his wife was just a bit younger. It's tough crawling around on bad knees and giving piggy back rides with a bad back. |
