Location: Oregon | My husband has an Ovation 12 string acoustic/electric that had a little tab on the neck that had Glen Campbell's 'signature'. He took that off when he was cleaning it and it has the number 1615 written in black ink. From what I see online, those are two different guitars.... sigh....
Where can I get info on this? I need to have monetary values for his equipment for insurance purposes, but we didn't buy this one new...so I'm not sure where to start. I'm guessing it's not worth much but want to have as accurate an estimate as possible.
Thanks for any help you can offer. |

Location: Tennessee | There probably won't be a lot of difference either way. Inside the bowl there ought to be a label that has a model number on it, and a small sticker with a six digit serial number. Check both of those and let us know ... someone here will be able to give you a ballpark. It's also helpful to know if there is any damage on the guitar and/or cracks in the finish on the top.

Location: Central Florida | It sounds like a previous owner put a Glen Campbell truss rod cover on the headstock as an aftermarket modification. The basic differences between the GC signature 12 string, which is model # 1618, and a 1615 are cosmetic only. The GC has fancier diamond inlays on the fingerboard, white binding around the edge of the fingerboard and gold plated tuners. The 1615 has no fingerboard binding, less ornate inlays and chrome tuners.
As for value, it depends largely on condition, but a 1615 in reasonably good shape is probably worth about $350-450, while the Campbell model might fetch $400-500. These are rough estimates at best, but it should give you a general idea. |

Location: Oregon | Wow! Incredibly fast responses! It is definately a 1615, not a GC. The tuners are chrome with the clearish knobs. The model number, just because I have it here, is 181878.
It's in pretty good condition...one barely noticeable 'ding' in the neck, the wood is in great condition and no other issues that I know of. Both the acoustic and electric features work great.

If you're going to put a trc on a K-bar Ovation, you also have to cut and glue trc screw heads into the screw holes, then put on the trc with very thin double sided tape.
That's what Tup would do..... |

Location: Tennessee | Mama ... FWIW, since this is for insurance purposes you ought to declare at the high end. You never know if you'll be able to replace that guitar for the numbers quoted above. It all depends on market conditions and timing. I've sometimes seen folks asking over $1000 for nice ones. Not to mention you've got a pre-Fender model on your hands. The value you declare will be for replacing the guitar, not selling it. Could be a big difference. |

If you're declaring for insurance purposes, like Bobbo said, aim high. search closed ebay auctions, roll that in with prices around here, maybe even drop by Borders or Powell's and see if it's in one of the guitar "Bluebooks".. then take the highest number you find! ;) |

well, david witko is certainly a "certain kind of person". i won't say which kind. (although he is one of my heroes.) i will tell you that i was only jibing on the tupperware salesman part.

1. I don't sell tupperware, I only play it.
2. Actually I don't even own any real tupperware. That stuff you buy at Sharper Image with the four sided locking lids is about a million times better.
3. I have never encouraged faux TRC's. That was another member in another era. Although I do own the patent on using dummy screw heads and double face tape.
4. Visit the Takamineforum to learn about those guitars. The admins are nice guys, not at all like the grumpy old man and smart ass poster over here.
In summary: sunburst sounds better than natural, gloss is the boss, wood is good, 1-3/4" is standard, multi-holes are for bowling balls and hookers, and taylors still suck.
