Location: Kensington, MD | I am new to this site and need some advice. It is thus: I just purchased (online) an Ovation Balladeer 6571LX 12 string for a price that was a couple hundred less than my local music store would have sold me one. I saw that is was advertised as a "FRG" but there was no further mention of what that meant and the rest of the site referred to the guitar as being "new". It then mentioned a 5 year warrantee which seemed fine until I discovered that the factory warrantee is lifetime (for parts). How does a shop get to sell a reconditioned instrument as new?
Did I screw up? If so, did I screw up big time? :eek: |

Location: Phoenix AZ | FRG's are factory seconds. They are new, but not perfect. I have bought a few FRGs and often it is difficult to find the reason they are seconds. They carry a 5 year factory warranty.
You didn't screw up. Other than maybe helping to drive your local dealer out of business.

Location: Capital District, NY, USA Minor Outlying Islands | I've never found a local dealer selling an FRG. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, it just hasn't happened to me. He can still use the local guy for the initial set up, buy strings etc. He may not have even bought the guitar if it was the full price, so he helped ovation and helped himself. |

No, you're right ... Better to buy from anyplace than not buy at all. And better to buy an FRG than not buy at all.
My comment was a little tongue-in-cheek, but certainly does have an element of truth in it. Depends on the guitar in question as well. On a 1000. guitar saving a few hundred is a big deal. If the guitar is a 2000 instrument, then maybe the lifetime warranty and being able to deal locally is worth the extra few hundred. All depends.
Also depends on what the on-line dealer actually "is". Some are just a catalog shopping front like Music-123 or MF, etc. Others like Sweetwater and Lost Art are actually very personal dealers with great service who just happen to do a lot of their business via remote communications.

Location: Boise, Idaho | The difference will be that if you need warranty work more than 5 years down the road, you will then pay for the work, probably more than what you saved. The resale value down the road probably be about the same. A second owner doesn't get either warranty.
The odds of not discovering a problem in 5 years is probably pretty small. If it bothers you, buy your next Ovation with the lifetime warranty. |
