I'm currently doing some neck work on my acoustic. Have a problem with the nut, bridge, frets, neck or truss rod on your guitar? No special tools.
There are pictures and a running dialog if you'd like to check in on the progress.

Nice detail. My only problem was I had trouble reading the purple links against the black background.

Thank you all! I'm back to working on the nut today. If I mess up, I won't hide it.

Nice Wayne! I wish I had the attention span to photograph it when I actually do get around to doing something. I look forward to watching it progress.

It's also a Chick Magnet. Don't believe me? Ask my wife. I can't get her to leave!
That's a funny line... :D
Unfortunately, if they do leave they usually take the guitar with 'em! :(

Hey Mark! Do you like standard blue better? You're right. It was a bit of a pain to look at. Taking the pictures and keeping the page up to date takes more time than working on the guitar. Oh well. It's a fun project. I think I'd give my guitar away to my best guitar buddy before I'd let my wife have it.

It's getting close to the time when I put a finish on the neck. The nut engraving should be done today or tomorrow. Anyone here applied a catalyzed polyester to an Ovation in the past? Anyone have any tips, methods, techniques or prayers?

Almost done. I put the first coat of finish on today. It didn't go like I wanted it to.

It's good to be able to play my 1112-4 again! The guitar plays fine, the web page is finished and I've got a couple of videos up. Anyone in Los Angeles?

Hey! BT717, Weaser and the rest of you fanatics!
I'm not so sure about the knowledgable part. Haha!
Some of the stuff didn't turn out exactly like I planned. I started the page so my guitar buds around the country could follow along. As I got into the project the added benefit was showing my guitar buds how to do their own guitar work. They probably brought their guitars to me because they were too lazy or chicken to do it themselves.
After the project was finished, I made a compensated saddle out of granite that really made a difference.
Anyone in Los Angeles want to play this Ovation and make a short video?

There's a few in your neck of the woods, Wayne, but a couple of them are at a clinic in Fla this week so you may not hear from them until early next week. I'm, um, a coupla miles away so I won't be able to take you up on the offer but the site is very impressive.

How long have you been doing this type of work? Seems like you've been around a shop once or twice...

I would say little by little I've been working on guitars since the early 70's. Truss adjustment here, fret buff there, replaced a few nuts, saddle shims, etc. Individually, I think they're all pretty simple to do. This is the first time I've attempted any finishing and the first time I've done all the the steps on the web page at once. Very satisfying!

Thanks Fran and Humble. It feels good to be accomplished. I'm glad I didn't end up with too much egg on my face. Glad you all enjoyed it. Yep, that was me with the spinning guitar. The stuff with the vocals are here:

Hey Wayne ,
I have been toying with the idea of sanding / oiling the neck of my 1617 , at it`s back , it looks as if a dog has been gnawing at it ( No idea how that has happened , allthough for a good many years it has been my "workhorse" ) , your tuition has given me some Encouragement ( I still do n`t know if I dare ) but...I would like a different feel , I`ve heard about handrubbing it with Walnut -oil , what do ya´think ??..

Vic

..why did you not use oil , or did ya` just not think of it..

Hey Humble,
I thought about leaving my neck unfinished but a little voice inside said, "You'd better protect the wood with something." I did some checking at woodworking sites. Some finishes don't sit well on top of others. Sorry, I don't remember what works and what doesn't. I just decided to use the same stuff Ovation uses. I sanded everything to the wood except the front of the headstock as I didn't want to lose the Ovation logo.
As the project was progressing, one reader suggested Tung Oil. I know nothing about wood finishing. The catalyzed polyester (finishing resin) was easier to work with than I thought.

Hey Wayne ,

Thanks for getting back to me , I understand the importancy of protecting Wood ,sure , but I`ve tried a Martin with " Satin -finish " , and I liked that " feel " , very smooth , then I came to think of JBL vintage loudspeaker -cabinets , where in the old days they would hand -rub them with Walnut oil , so I was wondering if that could be done to ( would protect ) the neck , as I have No -idea , what is being used to achieve a " Satin -finish " on guitars , the reason for all this is , that my hand seems to " cling " to the present finish , soo...any thoughts / recommendations ? :)

I think I saw an Ovation at Guitar Center with a satin finish. The folks at Ovation answered my finishing question via email pretty quick. Perhaps they can help. I didn't put 2 & 2 together until just now! I'll bet they can help.

Also, if anyone does recording on their PC, I've got a new page up with a pretty cool set-up for a dedicated studio. No need to spend a bunch of bucks for a new PC if you're on a budget like me.

It sure would! I have two guitar buds that use hard drives with USB connects. They work great.

I should also mention that you want to be able to boot from your USB device and that no other programs are running in the background that you don't need. That's why I like the drive bay set up as there is only one drive running when I'm recording and the only program on the drive is for recording.

What was the final height of the strings at the 12th fret?

I'm working on a saddle on my O and its at 3/32" at the 12th fret and that's too hi..
I'm going to try for 5/64" at the bass E and 2/32" to the hi-E.
