| Since I don't play, I don't know but this seemed to stand out. Doesn't look right to me so thought I'd ask. See where the strings come to the bottom...Wouldn't all the little metal things sit in the groove all the same way? These look like they are just wherever

don't believe it makes any difference although it may press in the wood of some bridges.

| So, it basically doesn't make a difference soundwise BUT it I reallign them, it will have to be retuned, correct?
I just don't like the extra strain...Just looks off? |

It looks sloppy , sounds a few octaves too high..I suggest that you buy a new guitar..and.. zip -up them flies
.. kidding aside :..few musicians would bother about it , sure , in the beginning it will look odd , but there are so many things to "dance" with , yet , Tony has got a point , after repeatedly seating it that way , it will "gnaw" it`s way into the wood , causing a permanent position of the string -ends , so , before tightening strings completely to tuning -pitch , use a small/thin item to align string -ends so as to achieve a neat appearance..and then ,.. tune to pitch :)

Location: Reno, NV | might as well put a fresh set of strings on your new guitar if you ask me. You wont know its full potential till you do. Just make sure you align the "ball ends" right in the bridge when you re-string. |

Take a 4" piece of old Big E string, that you have cut off when you removed the strings...
Stick it through the hole in the ball end when you thread the string to keep it horizontal in the groove...
As you put more strings on, line the holes up as you do so...
Then you can be a Real Anal-Retentive O'Cultist! :rolleyes:

Some don't, and I'd hate to try to drill 12 of those little suckers. sj, it sounds like you don't have much experience in tuning a guitar. Don't worry, it's not rocket science, just loosen them up, re-align the barrels, and re-tune. If you need to, you can find an electronic tuner cheap on ebay. Makes it real easy. Soon, you'll be changing strings just for something to do.... |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Especially for a 12 string, get an electronic tuner. I like the Korg CA30. It was only about $15 and is easy to use. You'll probably want to take the old ones off and clean and polish your uncle's guitar anyway. The nice thing about Ovations is they stay in tune for a long time. |

Location: Warren,Pa. | First of all, let me say that it is either the height of ignorance or laziness for anyone to string-up a guitar like that.
Secondly, you have one fine guitar there. I play my 12 all the time and a 12 has always been my main guitar. In the beginning, you ask yourself if you ought to do something to make tuning less of a chore. You go on a long search for the perfect tuner. You wind up buying 5 or 6 tuners over time. FINALLY, you take the plunge and get an onboard tuner. This one purchase transforms your relationship with your guitar.
If I were you, I would call Kim or John and get an Op24+C (they still had a few last year) if you can. If not, an Optima. You might not really be interested in dropping serious $$ into this acquisition, but it's one of the best 12 strings you could have and it does deserve such an upgrade.

Location: Boise, Idaho | I'd venture a guess that the vast majority of guitar players don't line up the ball ends and that the vast majority of OFC posters are anal about it.
I prefer the Korg over the onboard tuner, but it is an eyesight issue. It's easier to see the Korg than it is the tuner on an Optima or even the OP30. I like the new ones with the nice big digital readouts, though.
John, this particular guitar isn't going to get played much and I doubt that he wants to change it by adding an onboard tuner, after spending all this time tracking down his uncle's guitar. |

I saw a pic of Jose Feliciano's nylon string guitar and the strings were tied to the bridge sol haphazardly, you woulda thought that a blind man had tied them on! Incredible. It was a wonder that the guitar sounded even close to decent....... |

My thoughts exactly. I never use on-board tuners because I can't push the guitar far enough away to focus on those dinky little markers. I have a tuner on every pedal board plus a spare in the gig bag. They also serve as a convenient deactivation switch in the signal chain. |
