It deleveloped a dead/scratchy spot, right where I keep my volume normally.

Location: Phoenix, AZ | Try turning the volume control rapidly back and forth 20 times or so (unplugged), then try it again. This method has worked for me in the past with stereo equipment volume controls. |

Location: Utah | 1) You could try a spray pot cleaner. Radio Shack should have it. You'll want to use some care not to get the spray anywhere else, most especially onto the guitar. Ideally you'd disassemble the can to get access to the body of the pot.
2) Or, keep your volume set to a different spot and don't mess with it.
3) Or, call Al and order another preamp.
4) Or, if you're handy with a soldering iron you could try replacing the pot yourself. (and order a spare preamp from Al just in case you bugger up this one!)
Me? I'd try #1 first, then I'd try # 4, and then I'd end up calling Al to buy a new one. If your preamp came with a new guitar it should be covered under warranty, so the smart choice would be #5, to contact the seller for a free warranty replacement preamp.

Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | I agree with Flysig. Make sure you get a spray made for electronics. It contains a lubricant as well as air. (That "air in a can" made for computer keyboards and the like won't work.) Spray around the bottom of the volume knob too, and then turn it back and forth a BUNCH of times. That almost always works. You may have to do it a couple of times, and it may get scratchy again in a few weeks. If it does, do it again and that should take care of the problem for a long time. |
