| I am selling my Custom Legend 1658 12 string. This was recently sent to Ovation for some TLC and is in tip top shape. I am putting this up on Ebay as well. Looking for $1,200. Drop me an email at tonmazz@Comcast.net or check it out at ebay, my ebay ID is trooper1047. Thanks. |

Location: Burbank | Since they are both 12 fret slot heads, how would you compare the sound of this guitar to a Pacemaker? Same, similar? |

| I personally have never heard the Pacemaker, but I can say this thing sounds beautiful. Sorry I don't have a better answer, maybe someone else on the boards does. |

| I will say it is light years better sounding than the John Lennon I just sold. That one looked awesome but I was always left a bit flat with the sound. I will miss this one badly. Kids in school so gotta sell. |

Location: Des Moines, Iowa | Awesome guitar tonmazz, but I'm wondering what was wrong with your 1651 Legend that it sounded so badly. While I can't do the side-by-side comparison that you were able to do, it also sounds like your 1651 would not have had GREAT or even good sound even without a comparison. While I don't have a Custom Legend (similar to yours), I do have a regular Legend LTD 1651 (John Lennon guitar) built in 1979 and it sounds AWESOME! I have two other Legends, but no Custom Legends.
But... when I look up the information on your custom and my standard, it looks like all the same materials and grades were used for all important areas (sound board, bridge, fret board, tuners, etc.). I did notice that your Custom Legend has a unique bracing pattern. At first I thought maybe the guitar was just a fan, like us here at "Ovation Fan Club," because the Ovationguitars.com website lists the bracing for your Custom Legend 1658 as "Ovation Fan."
So, I thought.... Cool, a guitar that's a fan of itself would be a very confident and self-assured guitar. It would be the kind of guitar that would always come thru when it was needed most. Then I realized... Oh... it's probably a bracing pattern in the shape of a fan and since it's Ovation's own design, then it would be an "Ovation Fan" to be specific.
So, while I do have the Legend LTD 1651, which mine sounds awesome, I've never really played or heard an Ovation Custom guitar, whether an Elite OR a Legend. Do they really sound better or are they just prettier? I'm okay with prettier... that would be enough motivation for me to pick me up a custom on my next GAS run or whenever I come down with another serious case of GAS, which isn't the same as what I had last night after we went out to eat at this new Thai place in town. No, that was "something else."
Anyway... before I get off on some tangent or stroll down the wrong street, I'll just summarize, "Do Custom Legends or Custom Elites actually SOUND better or do they just look prettier?" Of course sometimes when it's really pretty there ain't nothing she can't say that won't sound beautiful. Kind of like that really pretty girl with the adam's apple who lives down the hall. Some people say she's got a really deep voice, but I think she sounds real pretty because she LOOKS pretty.
But then what do I know... I'm just a...

Location: Tennessee | Sometimes, guitars are just duds. Could be the case here. What's more likely, is that you like the jangly, harp-like sound of a 12 string, made even more so by the 12 fret. It's really hard to compare that to a 14-fret six string and almost unfair.
As to the general Custom Legend/Elite thing , compared to low end Ovations they are almost always noticably better. Against a Legend or 1768, it's more of an issue of bling. The sound depends on how how full the mojo cup was when each of the guitars were built.

| Hard to say why the Lennon left me flat. While the Custom Legend 12 string sounds awesome, that's not even what I was comparing it too. I would strum acoustics in music stores and just got more out of some of them, even some lower end ones, than I did with the 1651. Could have been a dud or could have been altered in some way. I always suspected the neck was replaced on that one, and maybe not as professionally as it could have been. I'm just not sure. Don't get me wrong, it was a great guitar and if I played it in a vacuum with nothing else to compare it to, I might not have noticed anything at all. It had a bassy tone and seemed to not have the highs I like to hear from an acoustic. Maybe just a preference thing. |
