I've seen some crazy pictures, but have attended few.
I KNOW some of you guys have some interesting stories. Let's hear 'em........ |

At the Black Hills gathering we had Craig Carothers here for a workshop followed by a concert down the street. Craig asked if he could borrow my PA. No problem! Except Brad offered to load it into his vehicle and drive it down. As he was loading it he set the keys down in the back of the car and then he locked the doors. No spare key either. I don't even remember how we eventually solved that problem, but we did manage to get the PA to him and we all enjoyed the concert. |

Location: Tennessee | I'm thinking Amelia Island. Matt Smith being the music Maestro of Madness. A late night of OFC'ers doing a circle jam in Joe's meeting house behind the Mermaid fountain at the Florida House. Me and Al riffing off on the side while the main group all play the staples in the cowboy chords. Mr. Big plays "I Saw Her Standing There" - albeit through the perspective of a stalker/predator. Most of the OFC call it a night, the usual suspects play on. Sometime past midnight, the Moodster shows up escorting a tousled blond just about three sheets gone that he had picked up in the bar. But then she pulls out a battered Epiphone and starts blowing people out with old bawdy jazz standards. Another guy walks in off the street, wife in tow, and pulls out a rare Guild acoustic bass. Said he heard from his daughter that there was some real cool dudes from out of town he ought to come sit in with. After a few hours and a few bottles and more than a few memorable jams that will live in perpetuity, the tradition of descending upon the local all-night eatery was upheld. Multiple tables resulted in multiple checks. As the jazzy blond decided to drive one pseudo-Scotsman back to the site of the Frisky Mermaid and they exited the parking lot, there was a miscommunication as to whether to check was properly paid, prompting Florida's own Barney Fife, who had been eating waffles and making googley eyes at the waitress, to sprint to his cruiser parked out front, go full lights and siren, and burn out of the parking in pursuit. At which point the remaining suspects threw enough cash on the table to cover everything owed, topped off with a healthy cash gratuity for the misunderstanding, and pile into a minivan to race off to try and outrun the upcoming carnage. And thus the Escape From Huddle House entered the annals of Hiaasenesqe Florida history and the legend was born.

Location: Sydney, Australia | Less fun, but Iffy dislocated his ankle (not a sight I want to see again) down the bottom of the hill in North Carolina and crawled up the hill in the dark calling out for help. Then followed a long trip to the hospital where they drugged him up and popped it back in. After this allnighter, we stopped in town for grits (I really don't see the attraction) and had to make sure Iffy didn't fall asleep in his grits.
And a good time was had by all, despite the ever-present fear of being attacked by hillbillies. It didn't help that someone bought a banjo. |

I didn't realize that he had grits twice in a row. Beggin' and I fed him some the morning before. He didn't love them, and those were some great grits.
Here's a funny one. Beal shows up at Gtr's house for the jam and none of us knew him before that. We all piled out of the house, he presumed to meet him. Actually we wanted to get his huge stash of guitars out of his car - including 4 original slotheads!

If I was fair, it wouldn't have been a weird story. I think my wife has gotten used to it. She stayed through the end of the Black Hills Jam, turning the pages in the song book. (She reminds me of this when she asks me to do things with her like look at open houses.)
I really think we need to have a gathering up at our cabin in McCall. We finally bought the land it sits on last Saturday after 24 years of renting it from the State. If we could get any of you to try water skiing, it might make for some good pictures and stories. |

When was that and what "we" and "they" are you talking about? Nerds are always in abundance, but most of this group grew up before the term "nerd" was invented.

Location: Boise, Idaho | Seems like I take a couple steps back every day, especially when the weather turns nice. I spend as much time as I can outdoors and I don't practice. I'm currently working on the lead guitar for Peaceful Easy Feeling, which probably would take most decent guitar players a few minutes, but I've wasted hours looking for tabs, then more hours listening to it (only to find out that it wasn't recorded at concert pitch--433 instead of 440 in case anyone wants to know) and then a few minutes trying to practice. I'll get it down about 90% and then forget it, like I have most everything else. I've very slowly picking up some of the basics so that I can ad lib, but it's a very slow process.
I'm good for most anything from the late 60s and 70s, although there's not many I can do from memory.
BTW, you missed another great ski season and I only got out once. |

The first time.
Linda and I drove to Portland Oregon from Campbell River B.C. (Canada, for those abroad) a long enough trek that we did it in two days so as to show up before dusk.
Backed into a driveway of a weird street (which I now understand is Quite normal in Portland) and lead my wife into a strangers back yard. Where we almost immediately felt at home.
Though I never met another OFCer who could actually 'drink' until AJ showed up at Miles & Lisa's place. (But that's another story) |

Location: Flahdaw | Soooo.............back to the weird gathering stories.
I had joined the Takamine Forum before I joined the Ovation Forum, where I had developed a rapport with Gator (remember him, guys?) So Gator was gonna host a gathering at his house and invited me. One of the guys on the gathering thread at the time was this guy named Beal, who was gonna show up with about 20 high end guitars. I remember sending Gator a private message asking him, "Jeez, who is the dude with all the pricey guitars coming to your place? He's gonna need a U-Haul and an armed escort just to transport all of 'em." I was summarily educated.....
I ended up missing that gathering, but showed up at Gator's next one, met the infamous Beal character, as well as a few other unsavory gents, and played some utterly fantastic guitars.

Not with the same level of articulated preparation and technological pride, but repeated all the same. Nor grace. I shouted a few expletive phrases, ripped the damed thing off the track, and flung it from the deck. Things had been building up between me and that door.

Soooo.............back to the weird gathering stories.
I had joined the Takamine Forum before I joined the Ovation Forum, where I had developed a rapport with Gator (remember him, guys?)
(This is one of those questions I'm not sure I should ask, but…)
What ever happened to Gator?

Location: 6 String Ranch | The best was getting to know and become one of The Usual Suspects. Great friends forever and have helped me tons when it was needed. All the Amelia gatherings were good but I kinda liked when the Suspects played at the country store. That was a good night.
As far as out there moments it had to be the Huddle House Escape or the AJ face plant. |
