Location: SoCal | Appears that I will be shipping a Takamine to Australia 'down under'. I have shipped internationally (USPS to FedEx) but this will be a first. Any suggestions; things to look out for, especially customs, tax, etc.
Giving him a good price but conditions of sale are buyer pays shipping, insurance, customs/duty, PayPal percentage.
Please no April 1st (April Fools) comments.

Location: SoCal | Not finding anything yet. USPS/FedEx to Australia:
Priority Mail Express Int'l limits length to 36"
Global Express Guaranteed has a max length of 46"
Bottom line is that USPS/FedEx is a no-go.
This is not a change as I checked several other countries that would have no problem with the typical length of an Ovation or Takamine box that measures 47.5-48" in length. And, it appears that the shipping alone would be at least 3x's the cost for a shipment to Europe.

Location: Jet City | Was this an eBay auction? More than likely you'll be posting it again. Every time an international bidder wins on one of my auctions they don't pay after they see what shipping and taxes/customs, etc. is going to cost. There have been several occasions where I've lost big money on the second auction compared to where the first one ended.
And now you can't even leave a mark against a buyer when they pull out of a deal. Nothing happens to the buyer that won the bid.
I quit accepting out of country bids. |

Location: SoCal | A post on the Takamine Forum was WTB a Takamine 2010 Ltd Miyabi. Great guitar, only 50-60 to the US, wide neck (1 3/4), CTP-2, etc. Try and find one...well I have one that I play and two still in the case. Yep, after finding out all of the costs, might be a no-go.
I called FedEx directly as I have an account with them...appears USPS/FedEx has the limitation on measurement (length) but FedEx doesn't.
So, FedEx International Priority is a strong possibility and probably about $330 to ship. Not cheap but at least they don't have the limitation on length that USPS/FedEx has. Not sure what the import tax/customs/duty would be but I am offering it below the on-line dealers were selling them in 2010. |

Location: Sunshine State, Australia | I know it doesn't help you with your predicament, but I wanted to tell you that the problem with sending with USPS is at THIS end - Australia Post. USPS will send a parcel of that size, but AusPost will not accept it. The 2 guitars I bought in the US had to be sent via UPS at considerable cost. BOTH guitars were delivered by Australia Post. The system is f@cked up and the "alleged free trade agreement" is anything but "free trade". But I wouldn't want to live anywhere else... |

Location: Brisbane Australia | The best and cheapest solution I have found was to open an account with MyUS.com. That gives you an address in the US that your purchase is sent to and they then onship to Australia (they will re-pack 2 items into one if you want them to - for a charge, but it usually saves on shipping cost). Guitars consistently cost around AU$160 + whatever the seller charged me to ship to Florida where the MyUS depot is. I have been quoted some ridiculous prices by sellers trying to use FedEx (I have an account but they still quote around AU$300+ and USPS. |
