Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | Same length strings as full-size classical. Get medium tension. Although I don't care for D'Adario steel strings, they make good classical strings.
The trick to putting classical strings on is to NOT leave a bunch of slack the way you do for steel strings because they stretch so much. The wound strings will stretch quite a bit, but the momofilament ones will keep stretching for WEEKS. For the first day or two you won't even be able to get through one song without stopping to tune. Once they are on, unless the monofilament strings get rough edges, I only change the wound strings. They don't collect skin oil and dirt like wound strings so they will still sound good long after the wound strings have gone dead. |

Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | Same strings for any size. Ball end strings stink. They don't make decent-sounding strings with ball ends, and besides, they often fall right off the monofilament strings under tension. Once you've learned to tie the strings on it is quick and easy. I bet there is a how-to on Youtube. |

Location: Cork, Ireland | Thanks for your tips. Ball end seems a good idea, pity they don't make good ones. |

Location: Cork, Ireland | Trying a few different options on a full size and 1/2 size that I am 'rescuing'. Hard tension works well on the small one. On the full-size, they are harder on the fingers than my steel-strings, which I was not expecting. And yes, ball end mono's do break! But overall I'm liking the nylon experience. GAS setting in at last ( 12 string, 6-string, full classical, small classical, mini electric, lap steel...) |
