It will work fine for the Breadwinner but won't I need a longer shank (Dave.... don't go there) to hang a deep bowl? |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Buy the ones that pivot at angles and hang out further from the wall. That way if you're anal about your guitar hitting the wall, you can feel safer. But the real value of these is that you can hang more guitars in a limited space. Basically 3 in the space of 2. That means they are a real bargain. Buying more guitars to fill up the space is way better than buying a bigger house to hold the guitars. The worst scenario would be having to sell guitars because you ran out of room. |

| I have 3 Hercules wall hangers and 2 String Swing hangers. I definitely prefer the Hercules.
For the Hercules hangers I cut a piece of 3/4 oak to a 4X5-1/2" rectangle and routed an Ogee on the edges, then drilled countersunk mounting holes positioned so they'd be under the Hercules mounting block. The blocks that I cut and stained I then mounted with tapcons into our concrete block walls, and finally used self-tapping wood screws (with a pilot hole in the underlying block) to mount the Hercules mounting block to that. My deep bowls wind up being about 2-1/2" away from the wall.
The String Swing wall hangers don't come with a mounting block like the Hercules. I made a similar mounting block for those (just single thickness, 3/4") and with those the deep bowl winds up just about 1" from the wall, and the wood-boxes about 2". |

Location: Boise, Idaho | You can get either brand with or without the mounting blocks. I bought them without. Instead of oak, I used mahogany, just because I had it laying around. I mounted the finished mahogany boards to the wall using deck screws into the studs. That way I don't have to trust the sheetrock hangers that come with them. Then I just use the supplied screws and mount the hangers to the mahogany. I have 3 Hercules and 9 String Swings. I trust the String Swings more. They seem sturdier and the mounting screws didn't snap off like one of the Hercs did.
Brad, a disclaimer should go with any of my arguments: Don't try them at home. They sound really good to me, but my judge and jury doesn't find them persuasive. |

Location: NJ | I use the "OffTheWall" hangers myself, but I also use these little .25" dia. pressure-sensitive, clear silicone "bumps" on the wall.
Y'stick one where the bowl might "likely" touch the wall (being clear, they're virtually invisible).
If by chance the guitar were to swing "back" on the hanger, it EVER-so-slightly "bonks" back . . . |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | I think I'm up to 40 wall hangers of various sorts. I've got them on walls, dropped from ceilings using an angle bracket, attached to metal racks, on a brick fireplace, sticking out the side of an amp, etc. I even have a few cheapies that are nothing more than a 1/4" lag welded to a piece of steel bent into U shape, then covered in foam. They all work just fine as long as the attachment is secure. Depending on the mount, the deep bowls are the most likely to rest against the surface, and that is an easy issue to resolve with a little protective material as Cliff suggests. |

Location: closely held secret | I've got the string swings, I didn't use mounting blocks, and they do touch the wall.
However, (one of) my upcoming projects is to replace them with a piece of oak with 6 of the Herc angle hangers so I can make better use of the limited wall space I have.
btw, one of the cool things about having a bunch of guitars hanging on the walls of a small room is when you sneeze. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I try not to sneeze in the direction of the guitars, but I have noticed that the TV screen is getting a little cloudy. Brian, I'll wipe them all down special for you. I have those stools waiting for you and Brad anytime. Tell him that my favorite little ski hill already passed 300 inches of snow this year and the weather forcast keeps showing a picture of a skier in powder so deep all you can see is his gloves.
Back to the sneeze thing, I can't tell which has the most sustain. It seems to be the Ute or the OFC, but they are too close together. |

Brian, you don't have to sneeze on the acoustics. You do have to get pretty close to get a response out of the Viper, though.
Be careful visiting Mark. You should always be cautious when someone tells you they have 'stools' waiting for you... |
