For what it's worth, to anyone interested ...

I recently acquired an Ovation Price List dated Setember 1, 1981. In the solid bodies section, the Viper, Preacher, Magnum 3 and 4 were listed as being available in Barnwood or Natural. The Finish Code for the Natural is a "-S" not a "-4" as on all the other Natural finished guitars in the List. In previous Price Lists, the "-S" Finish Code was not used. I contacted John Budny at Ovation to see if he had an explanation. His guess was it stood for a Satin Natural finish. I've run across these models in Satin Natural finish before (looks kinda like mahogany), but never knew it was an available stock finish.

Another first ...
In the same 1981 Price List, those black molded cases with the funky thin grayish black furry interior are listed in addition to the regular (tan) molded cases. Tan ones were $125.00 and the black ones were $95.00. The black ones weren't listed in previous Price Lists.

What were the prices? I'd be interested in what my late 70's guitars cost back then. Deacon, Preacher Deluxe, and Viper. Thanks.

The Deacon (nor the Breadwinner) was no longer on the price list in 1981. Jerome's site "Ovation Tribute" has a very good selection of price lists for different years. Follow the link below to the Price Lists Archive.

Found It!!!!
John Budny's memory is impeccable! The January 1, 1983 Price List explains the Satin option.

Interesting to compare the US and Canadian price lists. In 1972 the breadwinner is not even listed on the Canadian. I got mine in 73. I also had a 72 eclipse. Bought used I paid about 1/2 of list (bought in 75). Wish I still had that one, but was ripped off by a music store (long story). They're worth a lot more now.
