Recently bought a 1981 nylon-stringed Country Artist with a pickup/preamp that is not working. The factory folks are quoting a new unit for about $230 minimum, wondering if anybody has the old pre-equalizer unit laying around from an upgrade; absent that any suggestions on where to look, what has worked in lieu of etc are much appreciated .... kgh

Hi Kevin, welcome. Is it a stacked knob with tone and volume or just volume?

Hiya Kevin,

Can you be more specific about the pre-amp you have?

Did it look like this?

Or this?

Or something else?

And at the risk of offensively stating the obvious, make sure it's got a fresh battery and that the old one did not corrode the battery leads in the battery box. The box detaches via a screw in the side of the guitar. You will need to get your hand inside the instrument to retrieve it.

Sorry for repeating the question Damon. You posted while I was typing I guess.

No worries. Your post was much more thought out with pretty pics and all. I barely put two sentences together.

yep that's the one, the guitar tech who works on my stuff already has it out and tested everything, it has the
the early style Mexican made Pre-amp Piezo saddle set-up and he's tested all the continuity from the Jack, Piezo and Battery connector to the Pre-Amp w/ the single concentric Vol./tone Pot...all that is good (using a fresh 9v battery)...but there is no sound thru the Amp...his suspicion is transducer or the Pre-Amp module.
Hope that helps with this mystery... chrs kgh

That's the one alright, but which one is it? The stacked knob or the volume only.

I think I have a stacked-knob pre-amp I'd be willing to sell. (I'd have to figure out what it's worth though.)

stacked knob it is, would be interested if you are selling it. Ovation factory can replace with OME parts but it is the cost of putting something new and nicer in it, kind of would like to keep it original if possible.. I can give you an offline number if you wish ... chrs kgh

Just contact me through the OFC Calendar thread in the general section. There's an valid e mail there.

I'll look around my office tomorrow to make sure that pre-amp is still there somewhere.

Thanks to all who responded, Patch had a spare but at the last minute my tech figured out that it was an open solder joint, mini, on the ground wire .. but the OFC member suggestions and even someone finding the part is quite impressive. I will make every effort to remain an engaged member of OFC, although I have to admit I'm still pretty fond of my old Guild too...And as a Ravens fan, I didn't hold it against Patch that he's a loyal Steeler man!
