Hello ,

I believe I have a Magnum 1 Bass Prototype that I am looking to sell.

It appears to be a standard period Magnum at first glance but there are a
few differences.

1. The graphite reinforcement rod does not run through the head stock it
stops right at the bass of the head stock.

The bass indeed has had a head stock repair, it looks like the head stock broke
off right where the graphite stops, a good argument for bringing the graphite up through the end of the head stock.

2. The rear pickup, pick-up attachment piece and bridge are all slanted
towards the G string (E string is higher that the G string)

In every magnum that I have seen, the rear pick-up, bridge, etc are
straight across.

3. The bridge has no adjustment markings and looks like router marks on the
inside, the pick-up attachment piece has router marks as well.

4. The neck plate is blank (shiny but nothing on either side).

5. The neck cavity just has a capital "E" or "B", no date or newspaper, but
it has a white shim....

6. There are no marking signs under the bridge or anywhere else on the Bass

7. It doesn't have the original pots, I replaced them with a Rick stereo
harness a while back...The pots that I think were there are CTS pots dated
in 1978, 500k...(I'm not sure as I have a rick from around that time as
well, that I replaced the harness for)

8. I purchased a replacement pickguard off of ebay a few years back, the original had be broken.

9. It came with an original "orange" case

10. Ovation has said "This sounds like one of the developmental pieces prior to production but there is no info we can find on these it is so old and our records are not great."

asking $1000 plus shipping, would rather meet in person in the NYC area.

Hello, Sounds very interesting for sure. I couldn't get the shutterfly link to work even after signing up with them.

Compare your bass to the pics in this thread.

-need some help with the pics, they are all over 1MB,

-The main difference with other Magnums I've seen & the X-050 in link above is that the treble pickup & bridge are angled towards the G string.

-my bass has the carbon strip stopping at the headstock as well, it looks like it broke there and then was repaired, I had my tech clean up the repair a bit when I first picked it up.

If you do not have photo editing software, download a free one and use it to "save as" at a lower resolution. I use Photoscape which is free and fairly intuitive.

Good luck with the sale.

Heck, I still use Paintbrush on my Microsoft low end PCs.

I am interested in seeing what would make this a proto vs just a repaired unit.

<p>I think I get what he's talking about. I suspect the tailpiece bridge combo on that guitar was made from a solid billet aluminum. Probably the same for the pickup surround. If it was machined out of a solid chunk that would explain the router marks<br />The tilted bridge as described can be seen in the photo , which is assumed to be prototype tailpiece.<br />I would be very interested to see the tilted pick up placed in the body. I'm also interested to see if his magnum has the typical Magnum body shape rather than the early example with the more swept body.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Pic shows a std cast tailpiece in Gold trim (Magnum deluxe?), the milled x-00019 tailpiece, and a milled version of the OE tail piece.</p><p></p><p> </p><p></p><p> </p><p></p>

Very very cool. My opinion would be that that is definitely a prototype guitar
It does appear to have the same swept body as the X0 50 magnum one that I showed in the other photo
Which make it only two that I know of. Piezo saddles in the bridge for sure.
I have a Piezo bridge similar to that but it is the more traditional shape of the production Tailpiece

Question for Talbot and cosnyc ... concerning the piezo saddles. Exactly how are they connected and controlled in the control section? I mean, can they be selected apart from the other 2 pickups? If so, how?

-not sure if they are connected correctly, I had my tech install a rick stereo harness as the controls were not operable when I purchased it and he couldn't figure it out.

I'm assuming they are connected to the bridge pickup, there are no independent controls for it....

I'll take a look & post some additional pics

Talbot, I read these patent documents when you posted them in the other thread and I read them again. Maybe I'm just missing it but I can't see where the four leads connect to the controls assembly. Do they perhaps connect to some outboard device? In the photos it shows a cable coming out of the bridge with a mini-plug at the end.

Here is how the setup works that I presently have.
The tailpiece with the saddle pick ups was retrofitted to the magnum II bass that I used to play in high school
As you can see it's a direct replacement for the original equipment part
To use the saddle piece pick ups I had to use an OP24 preamp where the mini jack from the tailpiece would plug into the preamp like the regular under saddle pick up on the acoustic guitars

In my case, you could have the amp cord plugged into the output of the preamp for one sound , and still have the magnum to equalizer system for another option. Now, what I can't see in the guitar shown in this original posting was whether the Piezo saddles were hardwired into the electronics. Perhaps that would explain why they thought the original controls were dysfunctional

Did you notice in the patent illustrations that the body of the magnum bass depicted is more similar to these two prototype magnum bases in the production body shape

Thanks Talbot, that explains a lot.
As far as the body shape, yes I did notice. Which led me to believe that that body shape was the original intent ...
more of an elongated Breadwinner body. Personally, I prefer that shape. Somehow seems more "Ovation" for that time.

I totally agree. More Breadwinner / Deacon-isque as you mention

Another thing, notice the Schaller machine heads are not logo'd. Same as the x050

Did not pick up on the missing logo! Probably those tuners were already available in the marketplace and Ovation liked them ... and then ordered the same ones with a logo for the production runs. Just guessing of course.

I'm curious to see if the thumb rest and tailpiece on X050 are billet machined too
Recall , it was the one used in the promo ad (nearly certain anyway)

any interest?????

I hate to place it on EBay.

It seems to be historically important; I would consider it a verified prototype at this point......

This would be an AWESOME piece to have. I have the final prototype Breadwinner which I think I will be buried with but that aside, if I had any disposable or other kind of income I would be all over this in a heatbeat... or less...
