Just wondered what people here thought about the wisdom of having an Ovation refinished to remove surface cracks. Do you think some tone is lost through this procedure?

Ovation uses a Poly finish so to renish you will need to abrasively remove the finish and a bit of the wood and start over.
It is better to clean the crack and fill it with Cyano glue and even it out.

There have been a few posts on these repairs.

And, outside of The MotherShip, MWoody is The Master. Whatever he suggests, just do it!

I'm a hack with mind control powers.

Post some pictures of the issues and let the gallery see!

I am neither a Master nor have mind control powers! But I do own a three MWoody guitars now. How did that happen?

My opinion is whatever you do, only let Mother work on it. I would never let a local luthier do anything substantial to an O, especially something like a refinish. If you do send it to Mother you will be thrilled at the love they put into refurbishing your instrument.

Several members here have done the cyano fill at home, so I would be comfortable trying that myself.
