Here's some shots of the swanky custom tuner buttons from Paul Templeman. Very nice stuff.

Walnut buttons on an Adamas OFC Slothead:

Tortie buttons on a Lost Art Vintage Koa Slothead:

Grained Ivoriod buttons on a Custom Legend Slothead:

Wow, great! These ivoroid buttons look wonderful. I think I will put some on my Josh White.

Dave,

They all look good... Really like the Walnut on the RI Slots...

Did you put a pair of the Torties on your FD14?

I've got a set of Walnut for the 47 and a set of Torties for the FD14, though I already have and like Real Ebony on it...

I'm going to apply gold tone to the ferrels for my guitars with gold machines...

You know, I thought about making some with brass inserts, but it would have got a little too unweidly. I already have 4 different materials in 2 button sizes. Offering a chrome/gold insert option would have been a nightmare. Guitars with chrome hardware are far more common than gold, so that's what we went with. I'm working on a fix where the insert is counter-sunk and flush, which will happen if we can make the collar smaller and if I can absorb the cost and keep the retail price where it is now. I could have them made without the insert, but the insert pretty much ensures they won't split under tension, like the Schaller ones have been known to.

Dave, GREAT pics, thanks!

Incidently, second batch of full-size walnut sold out within 2 days of me receiving the shipment. I still have some walnut mini. I have stock of rosewood, tortie and ivoroid in both sizes, but full-size ivoroid are running low.

Paul,
The buttons are beautiful and those you sent me are very well made. I also understand that most machine hardware is silver...

I'm guessing that, most of us at the OFC were buying for gold machines and I suspect that your buttons, as AfterMarket-UpGrades are going to be evaluated by "Uptight Aesthetes" , though I clearly don't count myself among them.

The counter sink is a great idea

Those walnut ones look VERY cool. I put ebony ones on the black Adamas I and they look really nice too, but the walnut ones really go with that walnut headstock. Nice work!

I never liked the tort shell nor the ivory although these appear to be very well made.
Those Walunt tuners are fantastic though! Ya got me thinking. They really stand out on that carved slothead. I am thinking about carving a design on the edges like the famous Stradovarius Violins used to have on their tuning pegs.
Nice stuff Paul

Those are STUNNING! The walnut just beckons as a sailors siren...

The torties would be a perfect match for my Classic.

Beautiful work!

Just an afterthought; could one find brass eyelets of the proper size to go 'gold'?

Very nice pics, Dave. I wish I was that good with a camera. I did the same thing on the OFC and Koala guitars, and then installed the ivoroids on the VXT which has very similar if not matching layered ivoroid binding on the body and neck. These buttons are stunning.

Thanks for keeping us supplied, Temp. Now, if you could only send over some Tribal Planet cases as well. Seems like nobody is carrying them in the states anymore.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. I was thinking of buttons without the inserts and the purchaser installing the brass eyelets.

By the way ...

These buttons also fit Gotoh tuners. So let's get busy upgrading those Takamines! I'll take some Tak headstock shots and post on the other board.

Just PM master templeman.

A cool suggestion (by Paul) for 12-strings is to alternate pearliod and ivoroid on the mains and octaves respectovely. That way it's easy to grab the correct one to tune.

I put a set of the walnuts on my OFC over the weekend. It looks just like the first three pictures above. Also bought a set of the rosewood ones for another guitar. They are great quality.

just got my walnut tuner buttons for the 1688 from templeman. my camera is not the quality of tupperware's but here's some before and afters. one thing is for sure: the guitar is noticeably lighter!

these are quality tuner buttons and i like the feel of them. also, in this weather, i don't have to worry about the metal pitting nor do i need to wipe the buttons after tuning. mahalo, paul!

Some of the proto Slots had tuner buttons like that.
In fact, the Original SlotHead DRAWING shows a version of those buttons on the guitar . . .

Repros of those WOULD be cool!

See, this is what I really like about this board. Just when I start feeling like I know way too much about Ovations and their history, somebody chimes in with a bit of trivia like the tuners on this prototype and it makes me feel fairly normal again, like I'm not quite as anal as I thought......

Why would you want to feel normal? And Cliff, I assume the "f*&@ing reissues" opinion doesn't apply to these tuner buttons. I guess if we have reissue guitars we can get reissue or reproduction buttons.

I think you're safe with the buttons and the guitars. The reissues may have increased the desirability of the originals. For those who couldn't afford an original, the reissue may be the next best thing. I can't imagine anyone thinking they'd rather have a reissue than an original, but I've often been wrong, especially concerning marketing.

In fact, I am not a fan of reissues. They are never the same than the original is.

For example, if Mercedes would make a reissue of the 300 SL Gullwing, it would have an Airbag, Servo-Steering and lots of other electronics, that won't give you the feel of theoriginal car that it's supposed to be.

Different with guitars. Okay, the OFX Slothead had the newer electronics, but in all other things it was quite near to the original pre-series guitars.

And I am happy to have the chance to get one of this great sounding guitars today. Just because of the sound they provide, not for the history.

And with Al making it possible to order one of them in the colour you want, like my 1187-7, that suits your own wishes - it's even better. Not because it's a fake original, but you'll get a guitar that has the sound the factory doesn't list on stock anymore.

There's a side of me that says only an original will do. But at the same time I have no problem at all with aftermarket breasts. Go figure.

The reissues are wonderful guitars in every way. But the originals have more soul. You choose.

OK, I misinterpreted that post. I've downloaded the pic on Kurts post and I'll try to clean it up in photoshop so I have a good close up. If anyone has better pics, or better still a drawing, that would help. If they can be made they would need to be pre-ordered, I'm not going to have a bunch of these made on that chance that some people "might" buy them. Once I know If they can be made, and I have a price, I can take orders. I'll need orders for 6, maybe 10 sets to make it viable

If you can get them in the Walnut, I'll take two sets for my slotheads.

And the original patent, but it's not very detailed:

Would be great if you'd make them possible.

I hink the 08 will be better with a walnut set that you have now (or will have soon).

Cliff, a clearer line drawing will be a help, thanks. Once I have that I should know in a couple of days if it's possible.

GoodIdea.

I'll just need t'compare the drawing up against my guitar to check the sizing.

It's a 2ndGeneration copy of a C-sized drawing, and I just wanna ensure it's accuracy.

I'm good for a few as well. Those tuners were only used on that one guitar and they were cast epoxy. Get the drawings and tweek as necessary. They'd be nice in walnut!

Original vs Reissue. Usually the reissue doesn't come close enough and gives them all a bad rep. Like the VW Beetle.
In this case it's a bit like the two Doobie Brothers Bands, The originals are so cool because of what they are but they do have warts, and not all the same warts. These reissues are faithful to the original design and concept but are qualitywise much better guitars. Except for the one with the Witco lable, and that one didn't even get cashews!
I've heard similar things about the Cobras. The original cars were the spoo, but the redos are smoother and better to drive. SOooo you just got to make your choice.

So are you telling us that Witko's in for some surprises regarding his special order guitars? Something built into them of which he's unaware? Cool.......

Much as I like to compare cars and guitars, it just can't be done with reissues. Faithful reissues of cars wouldn't pass as driveable today. Sometimes the memories are just better than the reality. I had a Porsche that I thought was the greatest and regretted selling it. Then when I drove the same model years later, I couldn't believe how primitive it was. Old guitars are more primitive than the new ones, but the difference isn't so dramatic.

For the 1681 full-size walnut (out of stock, but on the way) 1685 walnut minis.

I get my set of walnut buttons today and they look great !!!
I'm now waiting for my next Ovation to put them on it... ;)

I'll also be glad to have a set of carved buttons for the Proto #11.
I already have changed the original chrome tuners with a gold set especially made for me by the Schaller factory.
These carved buttons would be a great addition to the proto.

Thanks Paul.

J :)

Just a note:

If anyone is moving from the original mini buttons to the larger sized buttons , as I am doing, you will need longer screws to seat the buttons.

This is on the 47. I didn't think I'd need different screws either but, with the bushing and the washer in place, I can't get the original screws to work.

No one else has run into this?

Hmm...

My Custom Folklore has the same mimi machines as my 47. I changed from the stock Schaller black plastic "ebony" buttons to full size Pearloid and then I decided I prefered the minis and changed to mini ivoroid.

I'm going to check my 47 right now and see if it will take a full size set

Issue resolved ...

after reading Paul's post I went back and tried another machine...

I discovered that the worm on the first machine was ever-so-slightly "hung-up" inside the housing, preventing the screw from seating.

Disregard my previous post....

Jeff, it worked just fine. Checked the 47 and my 1773LX, both took full size buttons using the existing mini screws.

When you take off the button make sure the worm stays flush with the body of the tuner. When you slacken off the screw it has a tendency to work it's way out of the tuner body slightly, especially if there's still a little tension on the string. If you don't push it back flush that might be causing the problem.

Thanks Alpep! and Thanks Master Templeman for getting these produced for us!

Great News!!! my newest granddaughter Lydia Lynne Rindge started walking today, and Char was released from the hospital! she'll be getting OT, PT, and Home Care from the Hospital.. and they'll have the therapists and nurses down a couple times a week. and Char gets to do nothing but rest, recover, and get stronger.

Thanks for the prayers all, it's sure nice to have her home..
