| How's that for a first post..lol
I'm the original owner of a 1974, 1621-4.
Here's a picture of it along with a Norman that I bought maybe 5 years ago; the classical guitar belongs to my wife and it was made for her around 1970.
I was going to sell the Ovation and in the course of researching its value I found this site. Anyway, I dragged the guitar out and after playing it for a bit I decided to keep it; just can't see parting with it.
I've enjoyed reading through many of the posts on here and learning about the history of these guitars.
I was a little surprised to find that the early acoustics don't seem to have increased in value. I think mine listed for about $600 Cdn. new with case but I got it for $300 plus a bass amp which I traded in. Most of the 1621-4 guitars that I've seen lately are going for around $200 USD.
I guess what I find odd about it is that I paid $300 or so for the Norman new and on sale but if I was looking for say a first guitar in that price range my used Ovation would be a much better buy than the Norman which, although nice, is basically a student model and very fragile.
Just out of curiosity, does anyone have any comments as to why they didn't increase in value; I would have expected a 35 year old Ovation in mint condition to be worth perhaps more than it's original list price. |

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | I got one of them, and I LIKE it. And yeah, I got for alittle more than $250. And it was worth every penny. I've thought about selling it, then I play it for a bit and change my mind! Cuz I could never get what it is worth... Really Worth!
Why do they sell for so cheap on eBarf?
No fancy finish, No bling, No tuner, No fancy buttons...
If you are buying one, they are Great! Solidly built, foolproof pre-amp, Great sound, nice comfortable size...
But if your selling...

Actually, one of the things that I like about my guitar is the lack of bling; no gold tuners, fancy inlay etc. Not that the other ones aren't nice but I've always picked plain looking guitars. |

The Norman kind of attached itself to me like a stray dog one day - I wasn't looking for another guitar but after playing it for a bit I didn't want to leave it behind in the shop - sometimes you just find a good one and have to buy it. |

| Yeah, I remember years ago hearing David Bromberg making some crack about guitars made out of helicopter parts. Then I see on here some threads about guys getting negative comments on their guitars at things like bluegrass jams and so on. I'm kinda surprised to hear that's still going - I don't understand it myself - it's the music that matters. |

Location: Lakewood, Ohio | The Bluegrass jams Ive attended are all but exclusive Martin territory, maybe a Gibson J45 or j200. Anything else, especially Taylors and Ovations are frowned upon. Those Bluegrassers are a funny lot. Ironically, I think Tony Rice used to play an Ovation. I cant imagine the Bluegrassers recation to if someone brought an Ovation Mandolin, downright blasphemous. |

And OMA, I haven't tried one of the MAD mandos yet, but CA makes a great sounding guitar. |

| Well the option to purchase has expired on the tropical island so it looks like I'm keeping the guitar for sure now..lol
A bit trivial perhaps but I've attached the original receipt and appraisal for insurance value. I think I got the guitar in the fall of 74 and then asked them for the letter in March of 75.
It was in for some warranty repairs in 98 when the bridged lifted. They also patched the back of the neck where they crack just below the headstock. It wasn't too bad, just a slight crack in the finish but they patched it anyway.
The finish has since come off very slightly on the back of the neck at about where the third fret is; I'm wondering if that had anything to do with blending the repair finish. I guess it'll have to go back to them sometime.
