I got my first 'side hole' guitar, a 1778T, about a year ago. As you know, there is a nice piece of spruce under that rhino-liner nonskid top. Well, I find a pleasant plus of this guitar (in addition to the neck and nice sound) is that you can smell the wood while playing. . . the soundholes being closer to your nose and all that. It only recently occurred to me that I only start to be aware of the smell after about 10-15 minutes of playing. Almost as though the playing 'unlocks' the smell, or probably more accurately, the vibration of the wood likely releases the pheromones. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this indeed symptomatic of the "wearing in" of the wood that happens to all guitars over time?

I am sooooo glad this is about the smell of the guitar!

On the glass bowls it was the binary resin.

As far as phermones go, the Musical and Emotional centers of the Brain are pretty closely linked.

I have been banned from wearing Old Spice by my Bride since 1998.

Then I had to cut the mullet in 1999.

I still have my 1112-1 from 1974 though! It has a sweet Ovational smell inside...

I bought my first new D28 in 1977 and used to love to open that case because of the smell. Now many Martins later I`ve been using a friends HD28 and its got that same smell. Nothing smells as good as a Martin.

Nothing else smells like that ... I love the smell of binary resin in the morning ... actually I like the aroma of my guitar ... but I don't really talk about it.

Collings smell better than Martins and you can take that to the bank.
They do give off the smell after they've been played a bit, the vibrations loosen them up.
My Merrill is the same.

Actually, I have t'stop leaving the guitar around unattended whenever two or more of you clowns are nearby.

Thankfully, I happen to like cashews.
