Also 'She Sells Sanctuary' by The Cult. |

And Ten Years After, "I'm Goin' Home"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bW5M5xljdCI
and about forty other tunes ("Hot for Teacher" anyone?) |

The 70's Rolling Stones, with all those great sidemen backing them up, came through with some gems - Gimmee Shelter, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Monkey Man, Can't You Hear Me Knocking.

Goode" does, and maybe Steely Dan's "Hey Nineteen" Steppenwolf has quite a few good starts - e.g. Gang War Blues and Straight Shootin Woman

Ridin the Storm Out by REO Rock'n Roll by Zep, or Heart or anyone else.. Rock'N Roll Ain't Noise Pollution by ACDC ETI by Blue Oyster Cult Fantasy by Aldo Nova.. Good grief the list goes on....... |

In that same vein... "Smoke On the Water" by Deep Purple. "Smoke" and "Stairway" - the two songs most played by pimply-faced 15 year old kids at Guitar Center when they (vainly) try to impress people... |

Yep, and that's why the pimply faced 15 year olds play them - they're some of the catchiest riffs ever strummed (or picked). I wasn't implying that people weren't impressed by the riffs - just the kids playing them!

| Okay, I'm in. "Rock-n-Roll Hoochie Koo" or Frankenstein by the Edgar Winter Group with Rick Derringer, though that Knopfler chop is fly paper on the brain. Additional props to "Sunshine of Your Love" by Cream, "Welcome to the Jungle" or "Sweet Child of Mine" by G'n'R, "Sweet Home Alabama" by Skynnard, "My Girl" by the Tempatations, "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" or "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder, "The Walk" by Pantera and "Walk This Way" by Aerosmith.

| Additional mentions: "Skinny Bop" by Poison and "Dr. Feelgood" by Motley Crue. Now, let's do some culling:
Old Man Arthur
Behind Blue eyes does rock eventually but not at the intro.
Slipkid
Nope, too basic.
muzza
Boston? Not what I would call catchy. How many people do you know that can hum it? 'Sanctuary' is closer but not enough to make the grade.
Tim in Tidewater
I love that tune but we are talking about intros
dobro
Right artists, wrong song.
Damon67
Overture from 2112? Again, who can hum it? Zep's Stairway is iconic but its the whole song that makes the intro memorable, not the intro itself.
Mr. Ovation
Queensrhyche, Aldo Nova. Nice suspense but not worthy of the greats. "Ridin' the Storm Out" in the league with the greats? Oh and see my entry for Skinny Bop as an improved version of ETI
titti191730cm
That intro is too complicated, like your username
rick endres
A little too pedantic to make the category. Captain Lovehandles picked the right Eagles tune. CSN was a better try.
Beal
Seriously? It might sway but it definitely doesn't rock
tpa
Berry, definitely, Steppenwolf close but no, as for the rest, really?
DaveKell
I love ZZTop but couldn't you pick a better one than that one?
dwg preacher
Interesting but maybe not quite iconic.
TOPDOGJIM
No matter which version, I always got the sense the guitarist forget which song he was playing
If you weren't mentioned above, I agree with your submission and applaud your fine taste in rock riffs, for the others mentioned, you probably have many other redeeming qualities besides recognizing a great rock opening riff

Well, like I said, if you ain't on the list above, then I endorse your selection. If anyone gave a fig about my opinion, they could easily trace the thread back to figure it out.
By the way, you're right, I did listen to every song before I posted. I don't make a habit of commenting unless I am fairly sure of what I'm saying, unlike some members here who speak without knowledge and make false accusations with regularity
BobG
By the way, did you ever learn the meaning of those words you were having trouble with? It's a shame your wits don't match your taste in music

titti, click on the "Control Panel" button in the upper right hand corner. The very first item on the list is your Display Name.. you can change that to whatever you'd like. I think you still have to log in with the other username. |
