I am still one of the new guys around here but I must say...I am totally in love with my 83 Collectors Series guitar. Some research has told me that this is the most common of all of the Collector Series...so it is not rare at all. It probably sold alot because it was so nice and plays so great. What really amazes me the most is the variety of tones I can get out of this guitar! I have been playing since the early 60's and this guitar can get about 90% of the tones I am looking for when I play. Lots of prejudice in guitar circles these days but I know what I am hearing from my guitar...and the sound is GOOD! Now I am looking for a newer Collector Series to add to my growing group of Ovations. The nicest thing is that they are affordable. I buy my guitars to keep so I am the winner! My heartfelt thanks all at Ovation that contributed to this design of the 83 Collector Series.
Bob

As long as you didn't pay a 'rare' price, enjoy. Ummm, nah, scratch that. As long as you enjoy what you're caressing and it responds by filling your soul, then all is well! :D

Bob and I have been in regular contact, but I passed on the one in Boise for $500, only to find out he got his $599 BIN apparently. Now there's one on ebay for $750. I'll do my usual wait until the price peaks and then I'll have to have one.
My real motivation for one of these is that my daughter, who was born in 83, moved to California and I'm starting to regret telling her she could have the 1537. I thought the 83 would be cheaper, but more meaningful to her, and I wouldn't regret it being in California. A shorter version is that she's broke and would rather have money than a guitar.

I had an '83. Loved it, but needed to move some guitars to make room for others. It was in nice shape, but not mint, sold on the bay for a bit under 300... OUCH! Wait a bit, one will come around for a good price.

Mark,

the one in Boise is relisted due to a non-paying bidder. BIN is now $529.

This one is starting to smell funny. He has my number if he gets tired of the ebay thing. There was one on ebay around Christmas that I think went for $400 something.

The guy I sold my Tele to locally had one he wanted to sell. If I can find his contact info again, I'll send it to you Mark. I think he was looking for around 300 for it.

That would be great, Jim. That's about what they were running before I started thinking about buying. I seem to have that effect. I guess I need to start looking at the stock market.

Mark, don't look at my weight, please. It's going down and I want it to stay that way.

I just bought the local one tonight for $375. Not great, but not bad. A bit of wear on the cowboy chord frets and a chip out of the neck, but otherwise in great shape. I just can't get excited about the tone of a SS bowl, but this one is going to my daughter, maybe for her 25th birthday next month. Selfish person that I am, this way I avoid giving her the 1537. She can have that when I die or get too old to play it.

That happens on the same day, don't it?

Mark,
So glad to hear you finally found one. Acoustically they fall short because of the SS bowl but plugged in they are wonderful. I run mine through a Roland amp with some delay and reverb and it sounds wonderful.
all my best,

I'll clean it up a little more and try to fix the tone knob. It turns around without doing anything, so it might just be a loose allen bolt. Nick in the neck and a couple cracks in the binding, but otherwise it's a fine guitar. It will be a nice momento for my daughter. Hope she keeps playing. I figure if I give it to her for her 25th, I'll have to give the 87 to my other daughter in 4 years for her 25th, but that's cool.
