I am going to install an Ovation Thinline pickup in my Folklore this weekend and I need to ask a question.

Do I drill the hole for the wire in the saddle slot on the bass or treble side of the saddle slot?

My other Ovations have the wider pickup and the bass side is where the hole goes thru the top. I just want to make sure the thinline is the same way.

Thank You.

I have elongate the slot first since the existing saddle is only 2 5/8" and the pickup is 3".

My wife says she is going to leave the house while I do this.

WHOA! Are you sure ya want to do that? Will the six piezo elements in the 'wafer' line up with your strings?

They should if I remove the same amount of material from each end of the existing saddle slot.

Steve,

You're from Tennessee you should know we use chainsaws for this kind of finish work.

Those six piezo elements are spaced for a predetermined 'string/saddle spacing'! If your new pickup wafer does not match the strings, you will lose a lot of signal amplitude, especially the outside strings.

If ya want, I'll try to diagram what I mean. LMK.

Come you OFCers, chime in here!

I understand what you're saying. It is an Ovation thinline going in an Ovation guitar. Also adding a Stacked Tone/Volume preamp and battery compartment also an Ovation product.

I'll let you know in a few hours.

Not to scale but this should express my concerns.

The actual piezo elements are smaller than shown in the diagram which makes the spacing even more critical.

I'm relieved that the clever operation was a success, but it makes sense that ideally the strings should align with the pick-up sensors. So given the smaller saddle on the Folklore, what type of under-saddle after-market pick-up would fit the Folklore ??? ...preferably one like the Fishman Natural that runs directly to the amp?
I'm also wondering if Ovation makes a 17/8ths" wide,12 fret that has a traditional folk size string spacing at the bridge. If not, I think it's a good idea for thick fingered strummers ! ...just call me Josh.
