IIRC this has been posted before, but with all the recent ruckus about auditory acuity abilities, I thought it might be fun to revisit this Dollars & Sense (auditory that is) comparison quiz.

6 Acoustic Guitars Blind Tone Test by Scott Grove

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29p00Zb1EOo

His use of a basic camera mic to record the audio kinda defeats his intended premise (imho)  ...but I couldn't find any other similar comparisons recorded with higher quality gear.

*answers are @ 08:10    No Cheating!

I'm really not a fan of Scott Grove personally (there's a reason he had to disable comments and ratings on his videos; they got pretty nasty) and while the test itself isn't within lightyears of being robust enough to really conclude much, the implications were a lot more valid before the 'answers' were posted; IIRC, the cornskiffer failure was biblical.

That said, I do very much respect his impulse to kill certain sacred cows which he's a lot more aggressive about in the electric guitar world.

The only conclusion I could ever figure out is which guitar sounds best on my $10 speakers.

I'll just stick to being an opinionated Ovation nerd, it's easier.

Much like the video, I have an Epiphone AJ220S that sounds awesome!
It cost me $165 with a case and free shipping.
I recommended it to people looking for a woodbox (and they had them at Apple Music).
Also at Apple, they were selling Epiphone DR100's for $99 with a gig bag...
And I was recommending them to street people that I knew, cuz they were great for plywood.
And sturdy too, on a street corner.

But I rarely play that Epiphone, and I imagine that I will pass it on one day to a needy soul.
But there are some great bang-for-the-buck cheapies out there.

Right now I will be taking my $297 97C Beater outside and make it pay for itself.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Elixers either. Plain ol' PB's are fine with me. (just change 'em once a month)

Good Point!
I don't use Elixers either...
That may be the whole lesson learnt from that video.
Put EJ16's on everything and do it again.

Elixers sounded ok on my '07C. They cut down the finger squeeks nicely. Elixers sounded a lot worse on other guitars for some reason. Other strings sound a lot better on the '07C, too.

Meh, I thought that all of them were very lame in their low ends (probably a result of recording and my lame computer speakers), but #1 definitely stood out in terms of brilliant highs and rich overtones (which I guess makes the "popular" Taylor sound), otherwise I don't think I had any particular favourite ... don't really understand why supposedly people picked #6.

Guitar - (there's a reason he had to disable comments and ratings on his videos; they got pretty nasty)

I can imagine how comments to his video might runneth amuck. Plenty of impassioned, opinionated enthusiasts out there to get all riled up about any ol' silly little thing.  He did say tho he wasn't trying to make any particular guitar sound better than another, just playing his various guitars "for the fun of it." Neither scientific nor conclusive but (for me, and hopefully a few other guitar geeks) mildly entertaining.

Considering the number of guitars hanging on the wall behind him it seems he's got a significant case of GAS which makes me wonder if the real reason his wife likes the Silvertone best is because she knows he spent the least amount of money on it!  D'ya think?

CanterburyStrings - ...I have been right all along - elixers SUCK!

heehee

I've tried 'em too, once, and not again. Weren't the worst I've ever tried but not great either. (imho)

Trying to find the ideal set(s) of strings for each guitar seems a bit like medieval alchemy to me... I'm still in pursuit of the golden formula(s).

Trying a set of John Pearse 80/20 Bronze Wound New Mediums (.013 - .055) on the 1667 and liking 'em so far. Not too chime-y or jangle-y, tone across all strings seems evenly balanced, bass notes got a bit of zing to 'em. But that's to my ears which aren't calibrated to any recognized industry standard.    ymmv

Scott has earned a good bit of noteriety in the internet guitar world.

It began when he started regularly making youtube videos with what appeared to be (and very much is) an absolutely ridiculous collection of instruments... and not junk, either. He's also very opinionated, which will always draw ire. He seems to have carved out a wonderfully lucrative little internet business in selling guitar tutorials on ebay (screen name mrmrswoodworker ). You read the feedback, you start doing the math, he's doing pretty well with this... He's not a great player but honestly, he is a very good teacher. Apparently, he spends every dime on buying more and more guitars becuase he has hundreds and hundreds (as noted, essentially all quality)

Just like Joe Bonomassa, he absolutely, positively, very clearly registers somewhere towards the top of the autism spectrum. Whenever Aspergers types take up guitar, mind-blowing hoarding inevitably commences (after all, gotta have the red one and the blue one and the red/blue combo and the one with the green pickguard and the one with the black pickguard and that one year they had a blue selector switch knob rather than a black one, gotta have that one too...)

Just like any of us, there's stuff abuot the guy that's a bit 'out there' and lends itself to criticism but I will say this. He's doing what 99.99% of serious guitarists WISH they could do in earning a decent living playing his instrument. His collection naturally draws some envy but it is impressive. He's also incredibly helpful to anyone who asks and- something to me that is worth one hundred times every guitar he owns- his straightforward objectivity has consistently impressed the hell out of me.

He will hold up a $2000 guitar he owns, pick up a $400 and tell you that the cheaper one is better.

Now, you can understand why he's a bit of a 'polarizing figure'. He isn't afraid in the slightest to make sacred cow burgers out of peoples delusions and what are they going to do to 'challenge' him? Claim they have an even better collection of instruments against which to compare? They just attack the messanger.

It's an exceedingly rare trait, to be impeccably objective. He has that. It's probably why he's able to do pretty well for himself while most people desprately struggle through life, a few paychecks away from homelessness.

As a former regular poster and now just occasional, I have found it relatively easy to pass by your spectacularly inane and arrogant posts. I really could care less what your opinions are or if they match mine or not. It's really irrelevant to me. However now I really feel that I must ask what gives you the superiority to bring such serious conditions such autism and Asperger's into your bullshit posts? Have you any idea how devastating those conditions can be? And, if you do, how would those around you appreciate your using them like this? I think you owe a good number of those who struggle daily with issues like this a very sincere apology. But go on and spew the immaterial crap that you want in order to rise the ire of the few here who care to respond. As for me, I'm highly insulted and would like to invite you to go straight to Hell.

Guitar, do you go by the name of "bob" on another forum? I swear your writing style and functional anarchy outlook is identical to a guy on another forum I visit. Right down to the disdain for what you call the "sky g o d" on said other forum. If so, "what's up Terry?" (your old nemesis Arlo Kalon)

Ha! After a wonderful night with wife and friends at the club, I wake up to this nightmare.

Yeah, DaveKell...you probably outed this wanker. (Speaking of "outed".....it's a wonder Guitar can sit in a chair long enough to type out all his boring pontifications after all his long, laborious, night sessions with his friend gmaslin. Ouch! But it DOES prove that there's someone for everyone). Guitar/bob/Terry is a professional troll. From here he'll move on to the Larrivee forum, the Martin forum, the Massengill forum, etc. All we can do is call him out for the douche-bag that he is. Don't give his dissertations ANY credence...they don't even warrant reading. Just ignore him, or in my case, insult/ annoy him, and move on.

Well, well, Mr. Guitar.....
You had the "cleverness" to snidely point out that I had to edit my post to correct a word that I had quickly typed....."(and good job with the edit changing "your" to "you're". Wouldn't want to confirm any stereotypes now, would me)". Then you said, "You're pretty clearly not a very bright man. Might be a swell guy, great uncle or dad but in this context, dumber than a sack of hammers."
Really? So let's take a quick peek at YOUR drivel above....
First sentence/ paragraph (actually, there was no reason to start a new paragraph)_ "noteriety".....uh, what?
Second paragraph- "becuase".....no, it's "a before u, except after poo"
Fourth paragraph- "abuot".....wow
Sixth paragraph- your use of apostrophes instead of quotation marks is annoyingly ignorant
Sixth paragraph- "messanger".....Maybe you were getting a massage from gmaslin while you were typing this?
Seventh paragraph- "desprately"....yes, you clearly are desprately seeking attention

So, on top of being a boring, obnoxious troll, "you're pretty clearly not a very bright man. Might be a swell guy, great uncle or dad but in this context, dumber than a sack of hammers". Now grab your shovel, dig yourself a large hole, and please jump inside it. What a d/b.....

Well, FWIW, on the six guitar test I was correct on the first four. I saw another video of three guitars being tested and got all 3 correct. Do I get a Golden Ear award? To be fair, the three guitar test I thought was glaringly easy if you've ever played a Martin, an Ibanez, and especially a deep bowl Ovation, which I have.

Well, well, Mr. Guitar.....

Basically all of those were typographical, not grammatical ignorance such as "your" instead of "you're" or "I could care less". Typos going to happen when one posts more than a sentence fragment or a quip, which seems to be your top-end capability.

Using apostrophes as an aesthetic to imply sarcasm or emphasis instead of quotation marks (which imply, well, quotes) is a pretty standard thing.

No chance, though, you suck me into giving you a lesson on this stuff.
As noted, your presence here is to "throw stinkbombs" (<-- appropriate use of quotes since its an actual quote) and you aren't someone worth conversing with. I'm sure your wife or family or dog thinks your a swell guy, but I doubt you have what it takes to hack it anywhere else, up to and including making a meaningful contribution to an internet conversation.

You're (or, in the immortal words of you, 'your' (<-- use of apostrophes to imply sarcasm)) welcome to have the last word here. I don't converse with monkeys.

It would probably imply you're a candidate. Something of that nature is actually a pretty good weeder test to get 80% of the dreamers off the list, right off the bat.

Now, similar test, varying tonal structures, 5 randomly arranged sound clips. If you can beat that, then you might be a good candidate to see if you're not the outlier.

What exactly do you mean with "correct" - were you able to determine the brand/manufacturer, the actual model, the type of string used, the materials used in construction, the age of the instrument, the "popularity" of the tone, the retail price of the instrument - or all of these or something else?

I think that while manufacturers probably put in some effort and quality control measures to minimize variability on their production lines so that there is a certain similarity in sound, playability, and other characteristics within each batch that gets produced, once the instrument leaves the factory and is subject to handling and varying environments and setups these similarities can vanish quickly. So with these reviews and tests one always has to wonder just how representative an individual guitar is of its production batch.

Well, I guess I won't be buying a Washburn any time soon. It sounded like the cheapest to me. To me the Taylor sounded way too bright for my taste. The Martin also sounded a bit bright, but had more resonance. I described the Ibanez as "nice balanced sound." I called the sound of the Ovation "rich sounding." I quite liked the sound of the very cheap one. I really surprised myself!

Been out a while and have sure missed a lot. Someone here (I think it was Dave) did his own tone test between six guitars some years back that was a real blast to hear and weigh in on. Of course, we're all limited by our own computer gear, but I appreciated the time and effort he took to put it together. As Flysig said in another forum, my ears are shot from too much loud playing, sitting directly behind a 125 piece symphony playing full out, and loud motorcycle pipes over the years. At this point in my life, with the right pedals and signal chain, I can be satisfied with the tone from just about any guitar I own, so, it comes down to what feels the best to me. In that case, it is always the SSB models (my 1187 custom my favorite), the EA Vipers, and the VXT, although I'm quite found of the Hamer Monoco III, too. While I love the tone of a good Strat, particularly when you need a strong whammy bar, I hate the position of the volume switch. With my lousy technique, I'm always inadvertently turning the volume off mid-song. So, of course, none of my Strats actually have a volume knob anymore. You also can't go wrong with a good Tak with the CT2 preamp mixed with a Triax pup.

I was the winner of that fabulous prize, but must admit it was mostly by using a process of elimination. I think there were a couple Martins in the mix with some Ovations, but don't recall any Celebrities.
