Hi,

I'm new to the group.
I just got a great 12 string preacher.
The strings needed changing and the plastic tailpiece off.
Not knowing if I needed to put it on,
attempted as I restrung. I had no idea that the recessed bridge screws
were for setting the action.
I tied loosening both, threaded the strings through and started to tune.
Now, the action is too low.
I should have left it be and not messed with the screws.
Now, I need to re-string.
How do I get a setting place for each bridge screw so I can have a starting gauge?
Please advise as to how to get this back to where it was, nice action.
Please advise as to the plastic tailpiece.

Thanks so much! I look forward to many years playing my Ovation Preacher!

Correction-the tailpiece was off when I got it, sitting in the case.
Thank you

Hello chap,

Please don't take this the wrong way, but it sounds like you need a lot of help and have no idea what you're doing. My suggestion would be to take it to a qualified guitar technician to get a setup done correctly. It's a great guitar, get it done right the first time.

Yup, get with a Tech, meet and play often with others and learn as you go!

Thanks for the advice. I had never seen a guitar with a plastic tailpiece before.
I got it restrung and adjusted the to my satisfaction.

The plastic tailpiece is on, but the top seems to stick out from the bridge.
Since
you guys seem to know ovations, is there a correct way to put it on correctly?
It is a truly beautiful instrument and the sound is amazing.

The tailpiece was off and in the case when I got it.
Thanks

Actually the bridge is brass/tailpiece with a plastic cover. It's position/angle does tend to vary per guitar for a lot of reasons. You should have enough angle so the strings go over the saddles and then angle down to the tailpiece section of the bridge. The height is adjusted with the screws, the angle with the screw on the back. The Preacher-12 string would play like butter with no string buzz and the intonation should be near perfect. If it's not, I'd take it to a tech. There is so much pressure on a 12-string that adjustments can get tricky. neck angle and neck relief play a big part in the equation and compensating with bridge height may make it better, but it's a world away from making it right.

I have set up many many guitars, and a 12-string, especially if it's been unstrung for any amount of time like it sounds like yours was... can be tricky to get right. On the bright side, Ovation 12's are some of the easiest to maintain.

It is definitely as I and dreamed. Plays like butter and the sound is amazing. So warm, yet crunchy, jangly, bells, harmonics and sustain are surreal!
True power. A tad heavy but built like a tank. My 1st electric 12 string and my 1st US guitar made in the US! guitarist but I've really
Played for 40 years, mostly a 12 string acoustic guitarist but I've really forayed into the electric realm (not acoustic-electric}.
I've acquired a strange taste for analog guitar synths and their controllers. I also bough a few 6 string electrics and a couple 4 string basses,
most are vintage. I bought a couple synthesizers, nice modules, a bunch of amps, a PA, cello, flute, xylophone, recording hardware, software,
percussion instruments, etc...

Thanks for the advice. I'll check here often.

Thanks so much,
cj
