Dear Canadians ...

A fellow in Europe wants to buy a guitar of mine and the import duties are quite high. But later this summer he will be in Vancouver. I am wondering if I ship the guitar to him from US to Canada would there be any taxes or duties that he would have to pay in Canada?

Thanks

I my experience yes. I recently bought a US Ovation and even though it was supposed to be exempt from most duties due to NAFTA there was still an extra charge of approximately 15% for "brokerage fees" and other charges. For a non-NAFTA item this may be even higher. There are also duties for Canadian residents that depend on your length of stay abroad, but as he is not a Canadian resident he should enquire on a refund or waiver of them. There are also companies near the border that can act as shipping address, so from Vancouver it may be easy to drive across to pick it up. Bringing it across the border in person will save bot shipping costs as well as border and duty hassles.

Canadian border securities agency may have more info, they tend to respond to e-mail enquiries but it may take a few days.
