Looking for any info about this guitar. It is an Elite 1868. I'm having trouble finding stuff online.

Back in the early 90's when I was a young player, I drooled over the Ovation Elite. I play mostly Taylors now but I learned to play on an old Ovation 12 string so O's have a special place for me. I really haven't even looked at them in many years till I came across this yesterday at GC. Really took me back. I bought it for $350 with the OHSC feeling like it was a great deal. I remember them being soooo expensive back then. While researching I see there are tons of elite models??? I don't think there were back then, but I could be very wrong.

Just wanted to get the low down on this particular one and where it fits in the grand scheme of things. I dated it as a 1990. Any specs or info would be fantastic. It has a quite shallow bowl and im guessing year appropriate electronics. Also, it seems to be a creamy off white. Think it was originally white and this is just aged to cream? If so, recommendations on what to clean it with?

Thanks,

Jeff

I clean my O's with Dunlop 65 cleaner. Then I apply Dunlop carnuba wax on the face of the body and headstock (not on the back of the neck because it can get sticky).

All you really need is a damp soft rag for most cleanings. A slightly soapy rag is fine if there are areas of gunk built up. No wax is required, I'm just a bit OCD about my guitars.

For the fretboard there are a variety of methods used by forum members. I use a wet clean cloth to wipe it down, then a real lemon oil rub (not a fake lemon scented product). Mineral oil is used by many here. Oil only once per year.

I would not try to buff out the aging on that guitar. Just clean and enjoy.

Thanks for the reply FlySig. I'm a big fan of the planet waves cleaner and carnauba wax. I've also been using fret doctor for my fretboards... Amazing stuff!

Really looking for any model info for this guitar and where it fit in the lineup of Ovations back then

Yes there were other Elite models "back then". IIRC the first production Elites came out in 1983 - the 1537 and then the 1547 cutaway model.

You can search the archives here for info on those and yours.

Hi, Jeffz!
I have a 1990 Elite 1768-4 (Natural) Deep Bowl Cut-away with a spruce top, and absolutely love my guitar. I'm a smaller guy, and always wanted to get a mid-depth, or SSB ELITE in Natural, especially after The LX series came out. I was never able to sell this one to get what I wanted, (as in the limited Edition 2007 Elite 6778-LX-VN), but STONEBOBO gave really good advice here when he told me to keep what I've got. The sound is tremendous, and now the finish has got a vintage look of its own. I do believe you have a prize worth keeping. The white finish is on an Elite is RARE.
