Hi,
I am going from Hartford CT, to New York to Cleveland to Nashville.
Then back via Richmond and New York.
Any traveled like this.
Can you get away with a semi hard shell?
How hot does it get luggage area?.
Can you take it into the overhead?
Is too risky to take a high end guitar?

I have put a hard case up in the overhead... But the bus only had four other people on it.
The luggage area is in front of the engine...
There are two compartments so I would try to get the one furthest from the engine.
It is summertime, so it could get warm in there either way.
Loosen the strings... Really loose.
I would take a hard case if you are gonna put it in the luggage bin.
I would also be sure to get out at all stops where the luggage bin is opened.
(I'm not paranoid... I just expect crooked people at a Bus Station! Think about it)
If you take a Zero Gravity foam case I would take it on the bus with you.
If you cannot fit it in the overhead, you can sit by the aisle...
Then you could keep the case in the aisle and pick it up into your lap when people pass by.
Hope for an understanding neighbor... Make friends quickly.
Sit towards the front so that not so many people will go by on their way to the Head.
Anyway, with a ZG case... You could have it in the luggage bin.
Just be sure that it is one of the Last things to go in and it is secure.
You will be out there with it whenever the bin is opened, right?
All that said... I would try to keep the case with you inside the bus.
A hard case (or a ZG case) will fill the space above two rows of seats.
Some other soft parcels may be able to be stuffed up in there...
Just hope for a bus that isn't too full... then you can put the case in the seat next to you.
I know that don't sound like fun... But it will be. Enjoy Your Journey.

It is not the cheap option, but you can always buy a seat for your instrument. But I would just do the hard case in the cargo compartment, and monitor it closely as OMA described.
