Location: Portland, OR | As a native Northern Californian, I grew up vacationing in the Redwoods and loving their beauty, smell and grain. So, my question is, does that wood make for good instruments. The 2001C is a really pretty instrument, but how does it sound? |

First of all, I like the Koa, Cedar, Mahogany, Redwood, etc. Very warm, resonant.
Not sure why, but for a fair time, I didn't play it, then I would pull it out and rediscover just how nice it was.
A beautiful guitar in voice and apprearance. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | dvd has one. It does have a very sweet sound. It's another one of those on my list. There was one on ebay a few months ago that went for a bit over $500. I almost had it and it might have gone much higher if I would have just put in a reasonable maximum bid. |

Location: Central Massachusetts | I love mine. It's got a warm, woody tone to it, similar to cedar, but unique. It's a soft wood like cedar.
They pop up occasionally on eBay for $750 give or take.
I spent a couple of years living and working in Arcata amongst the Redwoods.. definitely a factor in why I got mine.
It's a bit customized compared to the stock 2001 Collectors', and I definitely need to get some nice outdoor shots of it, but here it is...

Your '01 is one of the most stunning Ovations I have ever seen. The top they used for the refinish is absolutely gorgeous. And the inlaid epaulettes do the rest. I'd give any Koa for that one away.

Damon, it suffered a catastrophic top/bridge failure courtesy our friends at UPS, so off to the mothership it went for a new top and bowl. In the process, I had them add inlaid epaulets, scalloped LX bracing, OP-Pro w/ XLR, and lots of New Hartford mojo. ;) |

I like it. As a native Northern California boy myself it "speaks" to me.
Too many guitars to own, and not enough $$. DAMMIT
Be sure to bring that one up on July 4th! |

AJ I keep considering selling mine every time another one becomes available because it has mustache cracks in the finish and I can't afford to fix them. :( But mine has an unusual bookmatch even for the 2k1 Collector's; the figuring forms a beautiful chevron as opposed to roughly parallel graining on most others. So I keep it, and play it, and hope to repair the cracks one day.
HOWEVER! I would love to find one with the center sound hole to go with the one I have. I've seen pictures, but never seen one for sale. (I imagine it would quickly exceed my finances anyway, but I can still dream. :) )
BTW, there's one on the 'Bay now for $899 BIN.
OH, but I love the tone it makes! :D |

I'm surprised to hear all the kudos for this guitar. It seems to go against the "grain" of conventional wisdom about what makes a good tonewood. I hope to test drive one someday.
I can't beleive I just used the word "tonewood". Makes me sound & feel like a pretentious Taylor fan. |

The very first time I met Al (and Miles & Kim, for that matter) was at a NJ GuitarShow. Al had two of the Redwoods (center & multi) and I was absolutely blown away by the tone of these!
They kinda sound the way they "look" like they would sound (if that makes sense). It "sounds" like "redwood" . . . |

Maybe for the cold climates if you were transporting to performances but in San Diego I leave it out of the case at 440 and have had no problems.
Very nice projection even though it is a mid-bowl. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I didn't mean to suggest that $500 was a value of one of these. That was one of those auctions with crappy pictures and an ad that didn't do justice to the guitar and it ended on something like a Saturday afternoon when no one with a life would be looking at guitars on ebay. If I remember correctly, it had a few finish flaws, too. My 99 Collector's also has the shizzle appearance-wise, but doesn't have the tone of the Redwood. They really did some pretty Collectors in that era, but the Redwood is the only one I can think of that sounded as good as it looked. |
