| Dunno, sounds like that guy who was overdubbing those fake "shreds" on various guitarist videos. |

Location: Chicago | I'm afraid this was filmed in the Adamo-schizophrenia ward of the Taylor-Martin Geriatric Infirmary. Apparently the poor chap has 47 personalities and TWO guitars for each. What you are seeing is actually 47 guitarists playing 94 guitars simultaneously. In his head, of coure. You should SEE the Tab for this one. There IS, of course, footage of Mr. Russell (x 47) at the CH Night at GC but that was LAST year. |

gh1 I'm not impressed by Jackson Pollack as a "painter," either. By these standards my toddler is a virtuoso. |

Location: Chicago | If honest, I'd have to agree: I like a fair amount of "out" jazz, but these guys (even the great DB) don't offer ONE thing to hang onto: a line, a rhythm, a groove, a chord, a tonality, a pattern. How in the name of Horus do they even choose a guitar? Or tune it?
"No, gotta do it over, I was out of TUNE" |

I sincerely wish I knew my way around the fretboard like he does... He obviously knows what he is doing.
But I would DEFINITELY be playing a different tune! |

Location: Chicago | Yeah, that's what's strange: I can really enjoy the "outside" blowing of Charles Gayle (sax) or Coltrane (a favorite is "Brazilia"); but this playing really challenges me to find something, ANYTHING to grab and groove on. Take 'Trane: he has force, technique wild "modulations" and sheer power. There is a pulse, chords, lines, riffs, phrases.
These guys, on the other hand, seem to be playing in a way to AVOID music. Maybe that's the point? |

That was an exercise to do none of that.
How much did everyone pay to sit through that and be able to call themselves "artists" if they survived? Did they get a T-shirt in the deal? |

Location: Chicago | I disagree, Jeff. I repeat: "free" jazz I like (some of it). You'll find in my vault lots of LATE Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, Charles Gayle, Schlippenbach, the Maieri bros etc. When it comes to John Russell vid and this Derek Bailey vid, I honestly don't think the emperors have any clothes. Inside of the inside of WHAT? |

Location: Chicago | No Darth. First you must listen to some awesome and very free jazz that makes my point. Coltrane plays VIGIL (1965) . Here Tyner (piano) is driving a fierce groove with Elvin Jones (drums). There is a modal focus but 'Trane is blowing very free. This I can listen to! |

That is the problem with "the Arts" all you have to do is be a freak and they will call you a genius! If I drop my 12 strings down a flight of stairs and record it, can I get a grant and a rotation on the college tour circuit!!! |
