My wife and I were watching an REO Speedwagon concert last night and I notice that the lead singer was playing a few different Ovations, but they did not seem to have a bowl for the back. I have a super shallow back O, but these guitars looked even shallower. I am sure they were Ovations since I could see the logo on the headstock, and the guitars had the multiple sound holes like my Ovation does. And I did not see any external pickups, so I do not think they were a custom hollow body electric either.
Any ideas?

Location: Fort Worth, TX | I saw parts of that as well and wondered the same thing. I searched google images and found a large, close up shot of the guitar in question. It is a 3/4 view of the guitar as he is holding it. It does appear to be a super shallow bowl as the roundback is plainly evident in the pic. I have three REO cd's on my iPod I listen to a lot when I'm out walking. One of my all time favs. |

Location: Colorado | I believe Kevin Cronin plays custom made Ovation Viper guitars which have more of an electric feel--they are much thinner than a super shallow bowl. I saw the same concert and really liked the blue Viper w/ the blue MOP epaulets.

Joey and I saw REO at a little amphitheater here in Denver, around 2007 or 8? I remember the Ovations from that show. We were there to see Styx, but REO really put on a great show, and I was impressed with Kevin's preaching! Yes, you read that right. I left there saying, I can't believe I never bothered to see them before! Great show! |

Location: Colorado | My wife and I went to the Greeley Stampede back in 1998 where Clay Walker was the headliner for that show. But REO was on the bill and played before Clay did. REO started with "Don't Let Him Go" and half the cowboy crowd got up and walked out. They would later return, but REO just rocked that night--we had a blast. The latest bluray concert of theirs is very good--these guys still play great live and put on a fantastic show. YMMV... |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Our band is working on a REO number right now (Roll With the Changes). There isn't any way I can get the tone on the solo passages with an SSB. It requires humbuckers and a kick-a$$ pedal. Now, if I can only play it! |

Location: Denver, CO | Well it's no surprise, Prof! Gary was a Les man and I'm pretty sure Dave pays that song on a Les too. Incidentally, that 2008-09 tour Kevin's main axe was that bright yellow strat. I have one just like it. |

And you had the nerve to tell me you're not a collector! Tell the truth neighbor, you ain't gonna stop until you have a room full of guitars! Gotta get you past your caveman guitar playing skills so you can legitimately own all those axes, lol. |

Prof...Gary Richrath played Les Paul Standards all three times when I saw them back in the day...what a guitar player...IMHO they have not been the same band without him since..."tune a fish" is my all time favorite REO album and just slightly edges out "Live"...good stuff! |
