Can anyone help with cutting templates for retro fitting of Op PreAmps?
Bit reluctant to put the saw to the bowl relying on my own home grown one.

Location: Marlton, NJ | Paul - I have done this before on two guitars. I made a template out of modeling clay using a guitar that already had the OpPro installed:
Having the properly contoured template allowed me to find the right location to cut the hole. I used a combination of a roto-zip and sandpaper. Once you have the rough hole cut, it's pretty easy to shape with sandpaper - or a dremel with a sanding bit.
Here's a pic of the finished job (this was for another member on the board):
Does the one that you're installing come with both 1/4" and XLR outputs? If so, you'll probably need a template for the output jacks as well. I made that out of cardboard from the output circuit board itself. I don't have a picture of that one though.
This one already had a 1/4" jack, so the location was easy. If yours doesn't, you could put it anywhere you like as long as it's relatively flat. |

Location: UK | That looks interesting! Yes, I do have a guitar with one fitted. Never thought of working from that, doh. I let the clay harden,remove any that has strayed into the hole and then mark out on the new one. Straight forward enough. lead me to the craft shop and a lump of clay. Fitting to a Folklore with early electrics fitted so jack alreay there but as you say will need cutting fo r the XL. I should be able to use the existing pietzo?

Location: Marlton, NJ | Paul - exactly! Not sure about the existing piezo. The two that I've done came with new pickups. If the jack is the same size, it should work.

Location: Florida Central Gulf Coast | I had to replace a preamp on a Celeb with an oversize unit. I made a cardboard template. Didn't think of the 'play dough' option.
I used a Dremel with the thin cut-off wheel. Very precise control.
Due to contour, one end of the preamp missed being seated by 1/32". I had a piece of adhesive backed 1/16' black foam gasket that was a perfect match. |

Location: SoCal | This is an interesting read. I'm not all that handy with tools and have no doubt that while cutting and sanding the hole in the side of the guitar, somehow, I'd get a nick in the top of the headstock..... |

I have bought the "clay" and will attempt the template at the weekend. Have the Dremel and cutter and have already fit several in timber bodies so here goes....
