So, my new toy arrived yesterday. An Adamas 1897 courtesy of a lucky bid on E-bay. I'll post some photos once I get it cleaned up which brings me to the reason for this post. I need to clean grod from along the frets which is no big deal. I seem to recall reading somewhere (not sure if on here or in the Ovation history book) that Adamas fretboards are treated somehow? I don't remember for sure what is was, I just remember a reference that they are different somehow. Should I oil the fretboard once I've cleaned it, or leave it alone? Thanks in advance!

The walnut fretboards have resin in the wood, through some sort of pressure system. I think (waiting to be corrected) that they don't need oiling - but it doesn't hurt anyway, as any oil that won't seep in gets wiped off at the end.

They're resin impregnated using acrylic resin.

This is usually done using a vacuum system or under pressure in an autoclave. Not sure which method Ovation used.

Oiling resin impregnated wood won't really do anything because the pores of the wood are complete sealed, inside and out.

Hmmmm..... I think the 1897 is a SMT Adamas and has an ebony fretboard.....I only know that the walnut is impregnated. Ebony also??

Ebony is not impregnated and should be oiled.

Thank you all for your input. Yes, its an SMT, and the fretboard is very dark.....ebony makes sense. I oiled it.
